Another good supplier of SFP/SFP+, fiber, DAC etc is Hummingbird Networks. I have tried FS store, Amazon, and Hummingbird. I like Hummingbird because of their great support. You call them to determine if their products are guaranteed to work for a given switch and you get a firm answer. If they don't know they will sometimes send you a trial device. If it works, you pay for it and keep it. If it doesn't work you simply return it. Can't ask for more.

This goes back about 10 years, but the last time I talked to anyone at Fiberdyne, they said they had a new user applied, glued connector for certain types of fiber. The person I was speaking to said that losses were nearly the same as a fusion splice. I haven't needed more fiber for my small system, so never looked into it. And their prices for custom length bundles terminated to customer specs. were so cheap that it generally isn't worth looking into those connectors. 10 years ago the 6 pairs I bought were about $150 for about 130 feet, might have had a nonprofit/educational discount applied.

I'm working in a Datacenter as engineer and if a costumer asks for MMF connects I just show him the door or hit him with my SMF/E2000/APC whip. TLDR: Use Singemode Rant about MMF: From an investment standpoint, if you still have OM1 (gray) cableing, rip it out. If you have OM2 (orange) or OM3 (blue) ok. Don't buy OM4 for new long runs over 30m, it's ok inside a rack but it's failing to often. Don't be hyped about OM5 - to expensive and in 850nm it have more lost than OM3/4 because it's made for WDM SFP's with multible colored waves in one fiber. For new installs, use SMF and splice them to an APC Connector LC/SC or best E2000. Yes you need matching patch cabels for it, but if you forward a fiber link from your carrier through a building to your office via multible patchrooms, you will see the difference. Yes the SFP's are more expensive (20€ vs. 26€ @fs) but in the future if you upgrade to 25/100 or 400G. 400G QSFP-DD LC Duplex with 10km LR4/LR8 are on sale now (4000€-10000€ per SFP but 400G!!!) Even if you only need 100G at the moment or even only 10G, you don't want to replace you pre installed cabeling only the SFP's. (100G is @ 1400€ for a pair of SMF QSFP28 Modules) Also most QSFP-DD are SMF only. I normaly compare vendore SFP's with FS or flexoptix pricing and then choose what I need. If I need max. compatibility because I sell them to carriers if they have a broken one and need a replacement now - I choose flexoptix flash them and it works. If you build a office, just run fiber most of the way, pace a switch where your users are or plan floor tanks with space for switch, patchpanel, cable etc. Yes a fusionsplicer starts at 2500€ and easily go up to 10000€ but when I had the first one with a raw 12core cable on hand I had figured it out in ~30min without introduction. Also the device tells you if the spice is ok, @ rj-45 you mostly have to check the complete cable to find the error.

Thank you! It's sad, because especially with regards to professional WiFi 6 APs or newer mainboards, 2.5GBase-T will certainly establish itself as a cheap step in between. What is really missing is an all-round switch that can handle 1G, 2.5G, 5G, 10G over copper AND/OR fiber.

The 10G fiber to copper module usually has higher power consumption than the SFP+ standard 1.5W, probably around ~2.5W. This causes the heat and thermal problem and makes it more than 70C. Unless we have a good "cooling" system in the switch. Did you agree with that?

If I have to rewire the house I'd go for the highest available standard, CAT8 or go glasfiber. With the latter being costly but also interference free when new wireless signals might end up trying to interfere with the copper cables again in your house.

25GBASE-T and 40GBASE-T were standardised 6 years ago and yet I can find no evidence of them being included in any actual products (thoug I do see a bunch of SfP28 products mislabelled as 25Gbase-t). I would not bet on them ever doing so. It's also worth noting that when 10GBASE-T initially showed up it was only available as a fixed port due to power issues, SFP+ 10GBASE-T transceivers came later and were/are limited to only 30m rather than the normal 100m. If you think you may at some point need more than 10 gigabits per second then IMO your most sensible options are either to run single mode fiber or to run ducts/conduits into which future cables can be pulled. Multi-mode fiber is also an option for short runs but is less future proof.

Note: Not all PCIe cards with two SFP+ slots can do dual 10Gbit. Some can only do "failover"; eg. 10Gbit on one port and if that fails, you get 10Gbit on the other instead. I prefer fiber everywhere I can, because once you've tried frying a few 8P8C ports (due to high voltage differences between devices), and you no longer can upgrade your Mac OS, you're not going to risk doing that again. (Well, it wasn't only the two ports on the Mac Pro's motherboard that got fried; also my router and my switch - the switch can now do 100Mbit instead of Gbit, so it still "works").

In an enterprise environment like a data center it’s better to use lc lc cables than dac even sfp+ is better. The optics get really hot in a data center environment and the optics fail. Dac cables if this happens the entire cable needs to be replaced. With lc the optics just needs replacing. I have never had a cable failure before it’s always been the optics or a port failure. It’s a pain because if the dac cable is 20m and the optics fail you have to pull the entire cable out and replace it which in a data center is a time consuming process.

The heat issue with the 10g sfp+ modules is really when you have 2 or 4 of them right next to each other and they heat soak each other. Most switches tell you to skip a slot when using them. Would be nice to see what 4 of them next to each other does.

@petermichaelgreen

There most certainly is a conersion in the 10GBASE-T modules, between the simple serial data stream used by SFP+ and the complex modulation scheme needed to get 10 gigabits per second down a long cheap cable. Power requirements are the reason 10GBASE-T SFPs took a long time to hit the market and when they did so they were limited to 30m rather than the 100m of regular 10GBASE-T.

Finally someone who knows how to pronounce "MicroTik". =) -To my knowledge, there's no firmware on the SFP / SFP+ modules; there's only a short byte-table of 16 bytes (if I remember correctly).Those tables can easily be duplicated by a manufacturer, but if you purchase one that is 'coded', then it will only work in those products that are compatible with "anything" and those that require this code-table (like CISCO). So a CISCO-compatible module would (likely) not be compatible with HP and vice versa. That said, there are some modules, that contain diagnostic support, which means they'd have a microcontroller built-in, which means ... they would have firmware. Fortunately for us users, the diagnostic support is optional, so we are not restricted by that.

@licson0729
@licson0729 2 года назад
Don't use the 40km transceivers when it's absolutely necessary. The 40km and 80km transceivers have way stronger laser diodes and if the link is too short, the light received on the other end will be too strong to recognize any signal. These kind of transceivers are used for very long fiber runs (e.g. fiber running between two distinct datacenters) which is considered an engineered link.

Devil of a time with the mikrotik CRS3 + the SFP+ to RJ45 module going to my workstation with aquantia onboard nic. I have tried 3 different media converter modules.. no joy. Post in the forums w more details. forums.lawrencesystems.com/t/thinking-about-a-10gb-network-this-might-help/738/20?u=omcn Definitely not plug and play.

@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS You won't see any difference, maybe latency measured in microseconds depending on how hard/much DSP is in and SFP/SFP+ to adapt the electrical lanes on the SFP/SFP+ to whatever media you have. Or you have packet loss because your physical layer is introducing bit errors. You don't need iperf to tell you that, the network interface stats should tell you when that's happening.

It's funny to listen how the cat6 is "getting cheaper" in North America: there is hardly any non-cat7 TP sold in Europe.

What ? 6 and 6A are still the most common in Europe!

Cat7 is not really a thing here in the USA I did an interview with someone from the standards committee on the topic. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kNa_IdfivKs.html

Please keep things *high level*. I want to know your architecture, and how everything works nicely together, I don't really care which plug you use specifically or whether it is silver or blue.

It's pronounced MY crotech. :( #FAIL

It is pronounced "meecroteek" this comes from the Latvian language (MikroTik is from Latvia, and in Latvia they have our own unique language). The name comes from "Mikrotīkls" which means "Small network". It was shortened for easier spelling internationally. Source: forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?t=87582
