You failed to mention that, while usually we only got to play as the heroes in the story mode, in Tenkaichi 3 we got to play as the villains in those matches where in the series the heroes lose, and at the time this feature blew my mind.
@@robertrogers074 yeah whats your point? He didn't say he was exclusively talking about the wii version, even pointed out the wii version's differences
I'll add onto reminiscing the game. Around the same age. I bought my first PS2 from my dad's friend, who was getting rid of it on behalf of his college student son. It had Tenkaichi 2 bundled with it. I've known Dragon Ball, never played their games till then. It was amazing. At some point, I no longer owned the game. I don't know if it was lost during the move or accidentally sold off. I'm an adult now, I'll find and rebuy the game again, someday.
"Please let me know if you'd like me to cover more x games". Flandrew I need you to understand there isn't a person watching this who'll say no to more of your videos. You rock!
I really appreciated how comprehensive the story mode of Budokai Tenkaichi 2 is. I never fully experienced Dragon Ball’s anime/manga and that game finally cleared all the random holes in the story I had. Im glad the series is so much more easily accessible now for new and old fans alike!
Same for me, it's actually surprising how much knowledge you get on the serie by playing it. It's very comprehensive and there is just enough details so that you know what's important for the lore and the fights.
Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is still one of my all time favorite DB games. I spent hours of my life watching cpu characters fight each other on the hardest difficulty. Loved watching some of the weirdest fights and tournaments of my making. Good times. I would love more Dragon Ball game videos!
Bt2 is still my favourite dragon ball game the fact it has an amazing OST and story and a fantastic Roster it's seriously underrated as a dragon ball game
@@freezasama5802 100% agreed. specially the character selection screen ost. im so glad to say that i still own a ps2 and the bt2 game. i play it from time to time and it feels fking amazing every single time. ive played xv1 and xv2 as well and theyre no where near bt2. i was so disappointed after playing xv that i had go back and replay bt2 again to make myself happy lmao. really really looking forward to sparking zero.
@@smaamirtyagdal3106 I never managed to get a ps2 however I did manage to emulate it on my laptop and it's amazing. The fact lost courage is specifically for Gohan ssj2 because he loses his courage, hands in the sky is for the spirit bomb against kid Buu, dark half is for omega Shenron because the Dragon balls have a dark half, ancient mystery is for Trunks because he comes out of nowhere and is a mystery and so many more these tracks are really underappreciated by fans they honestly cooked hard with these tracks they are incredible especially that we got soo many for one game
A video about Advanced Adventure would be amazing it's such a hidden gem A secret input to access a secret minigame was literally discovered 3 weeks ago (May 24 2024) it would be great if more people knew about it
@@jonasjojofalco9896 Perfect one would more of the cutscenes 2 had, with the interactivity of 3. One could say Sparking Zero will have that, but what we saw was "choose your own adventure". Different vibe, kinda different result. It's a more intuitive way to "what if"
Great video! I'd like to see more for sure! My first contact with the Budokai Tenkaichi Series was either BT1 or BT2 when i played it once at a former classmate's house. The next time we went shopping i saw BT2 on a shelf and i asked my mother if i could have it. Since then i fondly remember all the hours i spent playing Budokai Tenkaichi 2 - not only alone but luckily with my brother-in-law and one friend as well! Then that same friend also got Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and he often brought it with him when he came over. We played the Versus mode the entire time and it was a blast! He often took the strong Fusions such as Gogeta or Vegito and i took silly characters like Arale - and often even won! Good times for sure. It taught me a lot about the world of Dragon Ball and it was a bummer to me that i read in a gaming magazine once that they wouldn't continue the Budokai Tenkaichi series.. To everyone's surprise Sparking! ZERO got announced and i am looking forward to it since it was announced last year!
The amount of comparison videos I would love to see you do is unbelievable! No matter how much you pump out, know that your work is never complete and you got more and more homework to do 😀
@@Lumia1175 as a kid I had Supersonic Warriors 2, Tenkaichi Tag Team and the ultimate GOAT: Attack of the Saiyans for the DS. Holy shit was it ever cool! I wanna replay it some time in the near future
Three of the legendary PlayStation 2 games. I remember I used to play them with my younger brother and we enjoy those games together Please make more comparison videos, like Lego lord of the rings, iron man, James bond QoS and make "when philsiopher's stone ruled the world" video
I don't quite understand the character design complaints A close up of a BT model looks a lot better than a close up of a Budokai model Like idk, one being more polygonal looks worse than the other that's less polygonal looking Maybe I'm misremembering or something but...
Indeed, The Budokai 3 models have very rough textures, and the way they are built, make them look very polygonal and unpleasant. And the shading on each of them doesn't help
I must’ve dropped THOUSANDS of hours into BT2 back in the day whoopin ass with the guys. I remember BT3 came out and we called out of school and played that all day Friday Saturday and Sunday. God damn those were the days
Would boot them up on my ps2 first thing as i came back from school and those days when you act sick to stay home only to play this game all day, simpler times
I loved BT2 so much. It blew my mind as a kid how cool a dragonball game could be after only having played wc3 dragonball custom maps and emulated that one snes dbz fighter
You're not alone. Many of my friends prefer the Budokai series over the Tenkaichi series. I'm the odd one out. I've sunk thousands of hours into the Tenkaichi series and I still play the BT4 Tenkaichi mod on my PC to this day
BT3 also had special functionality with BT1 and BT2 where you got bonus in game items. BT2 is also notoriously difficult on level 3 difficulty story mode, it's actually the most difficult in the franchise's history overall.
I'd love to see you cover the Dragon Ball Z Legacy of Goku series for the GBA. Legacy of Goku 2 and Buu's Fury are some of the most well-polished games ever released on the GBA, right up there with Minish Cap in how fun they are to play.
Yep! He actually beat Goku in his great ape form and then it was a draw against Majin Vegeta because Goku kept urging him they needed to stop Buu and the fight never concluded. And honestly Goku didn’t surpass Vegeta until he arrived on Planet Namek. Vegeta was stronger before that because his full power was his great ape form. Then he got his boost after he was healed at Frieda’s headquarters.
Yamcha is definitely the most underrated member of the Gohan Five, lmao Definitely cover more DBZ games! I actually recently picked up Burst Limit for my PS3 myself (As in, two months ago I scooped a copy from eBay). Once I found out it was basically Budokai 5 (Infinite World would be 4), I was like, "Why didn't I get this back in the day?" I always much preferred Dimps' Budokai style games to Spike's Sparking style games anyway. Still, it's always fun to look back at these games. They don't make 'em like this anymore.... though here's hoping they do with Sparking Zero, I guess
Something I don’t think enough people appreciate is the in battle damaged models. As the health gets low the models get cuts, scratches, hunch over, hold their left arm etc. and after getting hit with a big enough ki blast the clothes will tear and shred. Something I’ve always loved that as a kid really made me fee immersed in it that hasn’t been capitalized on since so far as I’m aware
I was practically introduced to DBZ thru Tenkaichi 3 and still consider it the best DBZ game (save for Sparking Zero hopefully). We had the Wii version since we didn't own a ps2 and even though motion controls are a gimmick, BT3 honestly felt really good to play with it. It was my friend's game, so I asked to borrow it one day and "forgot" to return it and still sometimes go back and play thru it again. In fact, I'll play it again before SZ.
Yep. Dad bought a pirated ps2 copy off the flea market. I was familiar with dragonball but wasnt into it, in fact i thought i found it repulsive so i was kinda ungrateful for the gift too. Then i put it on one day to try it, got hooked to the gameplay, started story mode and ended up watching every piece of db media existing
It was around 2007 or 2008 we played Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for thousands of hours at that point (me and my brothers, we did challenges, speedruns, handicapped fights etc.) it was awesome (we customized every character except for Guldo because fuck Guldo and if you got Guldo in the random character selection it was a disadvantage xD) and we knew there was a Budokai Tenkaichi 3 around 2009 but we never got it, no matter how much we searched for it. That is one of the biggest regrets of my gaming moments xD that we never found it at the time and enjoyed it as just a kid can. But we had so much fun with Budokai Tenkaichi 2.
I'm torn as to which is my favorite -- BT3 has the best roster and stage selection for sure (Muscle Tower and Penguin Village are pure vibes), plus the quicktime progression for the story missions coupled with alternate endings and routes was awesome. Also had the most refined gameplay. But BT2...dude the free roam map, the RPG progression in the story mode with the Z items, and of course the SOUNDTRACK. Made GT feel as epic and conclusive as it should've (even if they took liberties with the actual events).
I remember going to my friend’s house a few doors down and loved the hell out of budokai tenkaichi 3(sound I spelled it right) and the fusions and transformations always blew my mind, I have so much nostalgia for that game
BT2 is my favorite DBZ game and I was so hyped when BT3 came out, but never got the chance to play it back then. With all the new dragon ball games that have come out in recent years, I can safely say that no other game ever gave me the feeling of playing out my favorite fights. Super hyped for Sparking Zero
8:35 talking about some of BT3s added mechanics but completely neglecting all of the fundamental combat system changes from BT1 to BT2 is certainly a weird choice, but ok, this video seems to focus on content more than gameplay anyway. Since Sonic Sways were directly mentioned, why not go for more gameplay stuff? Like in the BT2 section that it added Flying Kicks/Ground Slash/Lift Strike/Rolling Hammer & completely changed the way these moves are executed, added follow-ups to almost everything, added the Step-In, added 2 new counter types, or in the BT3 section that it removed BT1 and BT2s move cancels, the Power Guard and the 2 counter types BT2 added to replace them with a heavy finish variant, that the Z-Counter was completely changed from BT2, or that the Emergency Blaster Wave (L1 twice) was added to the game as well
I'm very excited for Sparking Zero. Namco Bamdai has really brought back the classic 3D fighting game back, and it looks just like we all remember as kids. I'd never forget when I played Bodukai Tenkaichi 3. Now I'll relive my moments.
They managed to pack an insane amount of content in there. A modern developer would spend 4 years or more doing a fraction of what these games did back in the day.
I remember playing These Games with my Friends a Ton when we we're young. We battled so much that we got sores in our hands from circling the thumbsticks.
I wish I had known those existed before, but at least now I know and will have to find copies somewhere. Also, I don't remember ever hearing Mr. Satan's first name in the cartoon series. Did I miss it or was that something only revealed in the games? Also also, I definitely do want to hear about more Dragonball games. I stopped console gaming after someone bought me an OG X-Box one year and Microsoft pissed me off so very much with their predatory tactics. I still haven't finished Lego Star Wars because of them.
Budokai Tenkaichi 3 has got to be one of the games I've got the most playtime on. :') I had it on the Wii and now with Sparking Zero coming out, it'll be difficult to re-learn the controls with a gamepad, haha. Absolutely legendary games.
One of my favourite series of all time. Still have my ps2 copies of all these games, and i can't tell you how much I've played these as well as the BT4 mod for PC. Raging Blast 1 + 2 also felt like spiritual successors to the Tenkaichi series since they use very similar mechanics
In high school, I would go to my friends house, smoke a lot of weed, and we'd play 5v5 budokai tenkaichi 3. We'd even have other friends join us and cheer us on haha. We did this for years after release. Some of the best times of my teenage years 🤣
I see a lot of love for BT2 in the comments and it warms my heart because it was the first dbz game I ever played,i still enjoy it from time to time,oh and the soundtrack is absolutely top tier!
Budokai Tenkaichi on the Wii is so good that someone like me who has never been into Dragon Ball had a really good time playing through it and with the local multiplayer.
Missed an opportunity to make an actual Gohan 5 in BT3 by using kid Gohan, teen Gohan, Gohan, future Gohan & Grandpa Gohan. Tragic. In all seriousness super happy to see ya give the BT series a look over cuz these were some of my favorite games as a kid & I'm super hyped for sparking zero
Tenkaichi 3 on Wii was a random Christmas present from my brother years ago. I acted like a Budokai purist among other DBZ fans at the time, but when I played Tenkaichi 3, I ended up having a blast with it. Still probably one of my most played, most beloved Wii games. Still, I gotta admit, when Xenoverse came along, I really kind if felt like it was a sufficient replacement for the style. I missed the titanic roster size, but the fast gameplay and free flight and stuff seemed like it made Xenoverse the worthy successor. Sparking Zero does looks solid, and I do appreciate the differences in their goals a bit more now, but it still feels weird their niches seem so similar. I’d have rather had a new Budokai. You can argue Budokai’s niche has been filled by Fighterz, but gameplay wise I just found Budokai more fun. If Fighterz fills the competitive traditional fighter niche, I wish we could have Budokai back filling a more casual side of it.
I remember reading a kids magazine in 05 that said BT1 would have a create a character mode which turned out not to be true. I remember getting the game for Christmas that year and cracking the corner of the cover. I was so confused in.BT1 when I saw Janemba because Fusion Reborn wouldn’t get dubbed until the following year. I also loved the What If story where the villains band together to beat the heroes, even if Mecha Frieza vs Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Final Form Cooler vs Gogeta didn’t make any sense. BT3 also gave us King Vegeta and King Cold which were pretty cool. One thing you didn’t mention about BT3 is that the PS2 version had disc fusion which allowed you to import the challenge modes from BT1 and 2 into 3. You should do the two Raging Blast games and pair them with Burst Limit. The Legacy of Goku Trilogy would also be great.
Yay new flandrew. I was really considering starting my tenkaichi 2 over cuz I cannot bring myself to ever get rid of 100% everything and all z rank clears on all mission 100 that I have in 3. It's all flawless and must be kept until my wii itself dies entirely. But 2 I can restart without feeling like I cut a piece of my heart out. I don't even have a real box for 2, just the gamestop generic box from like 09
I don't get why people are calling the new one "Sparkling Zero" if the original Tenkaichi were called "Sparkling and Sparkling Neo", ect. It's still Budokai Tenkaichi 4
I swear BT2&3 are some of the only Wii games where people actually like the motion controls, usually thats only really the case for Nintendo’s own games
I didn’t realize “Sparking” was to Dragon Ball as “Biohazard” is to Resident Evil, I was wondering why there was such a major shift in the name for Sparking Zero. Pretty cool knowing what/why that is :)
You just described what I felt about Tenkaichi’s graphics. They were good of course, but I feel character design and body proportions were much better in Budokai 3, and much closer to the anime counterparts.
Something to mention. In the Japanese version they use music from the show. In the west we got replacement tracks. I will always prefer the Japanese tracks but I know a lot of people love the western tracks in this series.
It does have local co-op just one stage which does suck but the game has so much destructible environment it makes sense the only stage available is the Hyperbolic time chamber since it’s a simple stage.
I’m one of those snobs who couldn’t play these games on my PS2 just didn’t feel right I played 2 and 3 on my Nintendo Wii had a blast still own 3. Though for some reason I did enjoy 2 a bit more than 3.while I did enjoy them I always missed the fun and just overall 2D feeling of Budokai 1-3
There was a lot to love about Tenkaichi 1. The combat mechanics were super involved and made learning the combos and chaining attacks feel special. Tenkaichi 2 and 3 felt ...simpler by comparison. But the huge downside of the 1st game was not having in-fight transformations. It almost felt like they intentionally didn't include them to make part 2 feel more special. Actually, in hindsight, that's exactly what they did. Lol
The shin budokai games on PSP were freaking amazing. Original story with characters you never see again in anything else like Super Saiyan 2 Future Gohan.
In the first budokai tenkaichi if yiu powered up over water it would ripple. Also a glitch occurs when you use SSJ Goku's afterimage while performing a dragon dash clash. You will teleport but the ai will still be in the clash animation. With the hit counter going nuts
