Thank you for all of your insightful and informative videos! I have just received my120 and am excited to get it in the water. I purchased it with the knowledge of how stable it is and that it is geared towards fishing. I have received much of what I have ordered from you guys and other sources. Am in the process of installing it all and am awaiting the rest of the stuff once you all are up and running again. I'll comment again once I've had a chance to hit the water. Again, thank you so much for your awesome videos!

Nick, another great informative video, I have he sportsman 120 PDL. I do mostly river and lake fishing. I waiting to get the 120 over the 106. could not be happier. that extra storage up front was a plus for me. I actually store my wilderness cart up front and still has a ton of room up there.

The Salty is my favorite fishing kayak. Ive had several pedal kayaks and currently own the Salty and a Hobie Revo 13. I much prefer the front well vs a hatch i never use. I keep my cooler and cast net there. Super easy to get to. Its the fastest pedal kayak you can get and is extremely easy to maneuver. I can drift with the current and keep kayak pointed where I want with the rudder and very little pedal. Cockpit is laid out extremely well. Great build quality too. Ive used it for 3 years exclusively in saltwater. Ive run over hundreds of oysterbeds. Never had a single issue and very little corrosion. I think Old Town makes the best kayaks so you really cant go wrong with either.

Very informative video. I haven’t had the problem of water in the front of the salty but glad you mentioned it. I use the salty in central NJ in both bay and ocean. I do keep an eye on tides, winds and wave heights. I make sure wave heights are 2’ or less. I was able to rig a fish finder on a battery box. An anchor trolley and a aft box with pole holders. I’m new to kayak fishing but haven’t had any issues. I’m 5’7” and 190lbs. The thinner and lighter salty may not be perfect fishing platform but it is more likely to be used because it’s easier to move around.

I've got the Topwater 120 PDL and it fishes like a dream. So easy to access all my gear and can comfortably carry everything I need and then some. A year ago I was in Colorado researching EVERYTHING I could find about kayaks for fishing and NKF reviews and info were a huge help in making my final decision. I comped all of them and the Topwater won out for all of the reasons Nick mentions here. First thing I did was get a few of the must have inexpensive upgrades from NKF which turned my rig into the perfectly easy to use rig. Nick knows his shit and is a straight shooter gang, Listen and learn, he's got it dialed.

I picked up the Ocean Kayak version of the Salty a few years ago because I needed a cheap pedal drive after my first abdominal surgery and I found one for half price on craigslist. It got me on the water, but I soon found I wanted more storage, so it became my wife's kayak and it is ideal for that. I now also have an older Predator PDL and a new Sportsman 120 PDL. I use the Sportsman 120 most frequently because at 12' I can slide it in the back of my work van and close the doors, super secure and convenient if I want to do a quick stealth trip after work.

I own the Salty and for me two of the bigger considerations when I purchased it was weight (I do have to cart it across 100 yards of sand for my usual spot) and having it be nimble. As for the front part, as Nick mentioned, I actually prefer the "open well" design as it is a great place to keep a kill bag or bait (easy to get to) - how many times on the water are you going to open the front hatch on the 120?). Having gear you don't mind getting wet up front also helps keep water out if you're going through surf/waves. And this I'm sure will sound silly, but by not having much internal storage, it forces me to not bring every piece of fishing crap I own... which at the end of the day I thank myself as I'm putting away my gear in my car and loading it on top. I do mostly ocean fishing (open ocean, not just harbors) and it has been stable enough for me, as I really don't want to battle the swells or wind when I fish anyway. In short, I'm happy with the Salty. Thanks for all your videos and company Nick, I appreciate everything NKF does.

I bought the Salty last summer and was thinking to put some weight in the bow to maybe minimize the hull slap (maybe a cooler/catch bag full of ice). Now I'm second guessing this for safety issues, although I never launch in any kind of surf. I'm also questioning whether a scupper-mounted transducer is a good idea for the same reason. Any thoughts?

Owned a Salty for a bit. It was easy to get to the water, etc. A con offered by several who fish near our coast was that the banana shape causes the Salty to get blown around more. I experienced some of that, but typically didn't push the Salty on days with winds gusting over 15. Left those days for the BigWater
@NavarreKayakFishing
@NavarreKayakFishing 2 года назад
Ya, we talked about the banana shape in detail in the past. The Bigwater is a much better option.

I really like my salty pdl. Its light; so I can car top it easily and launch from parks and areas that take a bit to get into. Its fast so I can get to fishing grounds quickly (its sweaty work but I can stay around 5 mph for awhile), dodge boats in combat fisheries (something that happens a decent bit in wa) and go up small water features in rivers that others would have more difficulty. I also like that it is minimalistic; if needed I can still bring a few boxes of gear but like you said most of the time I just have a net, 2 poles and a small box of gear which I find is really nice.

I love my 120 PDL for inshore situations, have surf launched quite a few times now and haven't had any issues cutting waves. It's a little slappy and you can get a little wet but you're kayak fishing aren't you. Either it's warm out and who cares or it's cold and you're wearing proper gear so it's a non-issue. It's also handled 3-4'+ waves without any issues, never once felt unstable. I have leaned over the side and pulled 40lb striped bass up onto my lap, stood up in waves to take a leak, turned-around while standing - stability is unreal. On flat water you can literally stand for hours if you want, move around, stand completely on one side, climb over the seat, it's not tipping. It goes about as fast as my buddy's Hobie Outback. Those two hull shapes are very similar. I think there's something going on around the socials that tells people if you're fishing salt then choose the Salty over the 120 PDL. Obviously the name isn't helping out there.
@Comptonater
@Comptonater Год назад
The salty 120 is great, unsure if they make it smaller sized. I have taken it throughout tampa bay and the gulf. It handles chop 1-3ft really well. Haven't encountered any waves higher than that though. It's VERY stable and it's quick. It took me about 35 min to peddle from Howard Park to Anclote. With the mods that you suggest, it makes it even smoother and quicker. My only complaint is that I like to stand and fish and I wish there was more padding on the kayak. I have a tendency to stand towards the bow where there is no padding and it gets HOT. Then again, I am not a big guy and i do not need a lot of room.
@D2uned
@D2uned Год назад
I have had a Salty for a while now and I have it rigged for fishing and I like it a lot. But I like the sound of more stability you point out on the 120 because I have gone "swimming" once when I leaned over too far. Good thing it was shallow water and close to the shore. I think this will happen eventually to anyone who fishes from a kayak a lot. Lanyards are important for all your gear. I think a lot depends on where you fish. I fish freshwater in central Texas mostly "skinny" areas with submerged rocks and shallow moving water below dams. A lot of times I have to raise the pedal drive to avoid hitting rocks and the river bottom. The big advantage I see with the Salty is that it paddles very nicely especially when you use the rudder to keep on track. I don't think the 120 would work as well in this type of water and for paddling. I don't use a fish finder so I don't miss the gear well in front. All things considered, I'll keep my Salty for where I fish because it works better. If I lived near the coast it might be a different story.

Just took my Sportsman 120 PLD out of Navarre Beach on a Red Snapper trip, surf was rough one morning and I launched no issues, busted through the waves with water draining through the scupper holes as fast as it would come over the bow. I’m 6’4” 280, had a cooler fish bag of the front, and a milk crate with 3 rods on the back. No issues at all with the kayak but fishing was slow. Anyone that wants to make that trip I highly advise to get the fat sand tires for your cart, it was work getting the Yak from the beach to the truck with regular tires. Also all the after market parts that Nick sells preformed flawlessly!

Another informative one Nick 👍🏻 Having been on both, I can see your argument. I do like the on the water “feel” over the 120, particularly on inshore waters. Old Town did the Salty a big disservice by not adding simple side pockets. But if its not a fishing kayak then the Lynx sure as hell is not lol. Hobie lists it as a fishing kayak, where its essentially a pedal driven SUP/board. Not saying I agree with them but yeah… I still think the BW132/Predator is King of pdl/prop-style driven yaks.

Nick, do you have more detailed specs on the 120 PDL? I'm specifically looking for where the extra 1.5 feet on the 120 is delivered versus the 106. Is it all in the rear cargo area, or is the cockpit area a bit larger than the 106? I can't seem to find that on the Old Town site quickly. Thanks!

Blessings.. Your comparison, Nick, is very accurate. I have the 120 and it's a delight even my young son (14yrs) loves to go fishing with me in the back sitting on a milk create. I have a Salty and a Bigwater. I’ve taken both on SF Bay and outside on the ocean (and freshwater lakes). For me I decide which to take based on the launch location, gear needed, and conditions on the water. The Salty is much lighter and easy to get to the water in most situations. I can’t speak for the 120PDL.

I'm really appreciative of these comparisons between salty, pdl 120, and the big water. I was leaning toward the Salty, but Im not so sure now. Most of my fishing is on small flat lakes or from shore. I have a lightweight 10.5' that I love for that. Im near the Great Lakes and I really want something to jig/troll (simple long/flat lining) harbors for salmon, occasionally go outside the harbor on nice days, and be able to peddle up rivers efficiently and float back down to the launch. I also car top, so the lightness of the Salty has a lot of appeal. Im also a bit more minimalist so i dont need a ton of space. Im a little worried on the stability for fighting large fish in the salty, or just in general in the bigger water.
@NavarreKayakFishing

Appreciate this video as I found it helpful. I'm located on Vancouver Island doing a lot of tidal fishing (trolling and bottom fishing) on my Salty. Your definition of "fishing kayak" doesn't seem to align with mine, as my definition requires a kayak that will support a downrigger and move through high winds and tidal currents and never need to stand up. With that sort of focus, would you still say the 120 PDL is the better fishing kayak? I realize my scenario is the outlier so the definition likely aligns more with the bass, soft water or inshore anglers out there.

The salty is a fishing kayak. Its called “SPORTSMAN salty pdl 120”. If not why would it have a transducer mount? Read the description on Oldtowns website. Also the lack of dry storage is a blessing for coastal areas. Who wants to worry about getting water in the hull and having to bilge pump it. This could be incredibly dangerous when out in salty’ waters. Also technically you’re comparing apples to oranges in terms of stability u cant really compare secondary stability to primary stability. Two completely different vessels.
@NavarreKayakFishing
@NavarreKayakFishing 2 года назад
There’s always one sour apple in the bunch and the comment screams lack of experience but I’ll waste my time responding. As a person who has spent more time in a kayak in “salty”, coastal, offshore water then most internal storage access provides the fastest way to bilge a kayak. Water shouldn’t enter the hull - if it does it’s typically because of a crack around the seat or scupper holes. Comparing them and pointing out key differences allows inexperienced kayakers to consider things that they haven’t thought about yet.
