Changing the loading chime is the arguably most criminal move here let's be honest. That dooot-doot-doot-doot... deeet-deeet-deet-deet- broooop was iconic
upscaled quality increase: 2-5% upscale size increase: 2000% Aspyr: a job well done - in fact, we even cut more content to make space for our upscaled textures, enjoy
How many times do I have to say it? ITS NOT ASPYR THATS THE PROBLEM. ITS SONY!!!!!! You morons dont realize that LucasArts, and the developers who teamed up with them in the 90s/early 2000s were VERY much infantile. Aspyr downsized because Sony stopped their remastered version of KOTOR halfway through, due to it not being "cinematic" enough.
What even more crazy is they were the ones behind the kotor 1 remake - F - and kotor 2 on the switch - that never got the cut content that were promise, double F - They have ported other star games & games like tomb raider to better success, but why does those top 3 have to suffer
@@lulukomadori9651Apparently they tried to add the content without permission so they ran into legal issues i don't understand how a company could be that dumb
@@mysticwraith6667 but they literally advertise it before release, they should of know before announcing it, no doubt people got tricked buying it before the news
Nah the originals on Xbox had Jaba the hutt for both games and still were only a combined 7 gigs. No excuse to multiply that by a factor of 10 for zero added content.

I'm a UI autist and the thing that ABSOLUTELY KILLS ME is the fonts that you see on enemy unit names stock and ammo counters. Nobody's talking about this. They replaced BF1's nice in universe font, and BF2's iconic stylized blocky font, with the most bland, MS word document ahh sans serif font they could find. You can also notice they didn't even bother adjusting the Y position of BF2's toast bar as seen at the bottom of the screen at 4:07. LOOK AT THAT DISGRACE! Its nice that they fixed the resolution scaling issues, like you can see on the originals with high resolution the fonts and UI elements became insanely tiny. But yeah the colateral damage of obliterating the fonts in this fix is criminal.
@@picclejar yup the old steam BF2 is also a horrendous mess, and that's why i was so hopeful that this release could swoop by and fix everything nope...
@@picclejar What do you mean the font is lost? Even if it was somehow lost, they could extract it from the original ports and rework it into the remaster. That doesn’t make much sense.
Riddle me this, in the era of screens three times bigger than crt tvs, Why is split screen not in modern games? I understand that a majority of players are on separate consoles but what of families with one system wanting to play something together? The fact these tiny little tvs manage to have games with 4 different people while we only have one massive screen for one person to play on now.
In one word: Greed. They want families to have to buy the following for each person in the household in order to play together: a separate copy of the same game, a console, and a subscription to Xbox Live or PSN. It's a rough time we live in, in regards to co-op gaming. We have this awesome tech that a lot of us couldn't even conceive of as children and it's all weighed down by greed (the likes of which most of us also couldn't conceive of). But yeah, I have fond memories split-screen gaming with my dad and a couple of friends who occasionally visited when growing up. I feel for friends and parents who want to play video games together with their kids and are severely hampered in their ability to do so because of things like this. Major props to the few developers/companies out there who still include split-screen.
I agree greed is the reason for a lot of cases. With games like the new battlefront collection, they ABSOLUTELY could have and should have kept 4 player split screen. But to answer the original question of why split screen isn't in modern games, performance is a big concern. When you play split screen, your console/PC has to render the game twice, or three or four times depending on how many players, and split screen play is just not viable performance wise for a lot of high graphics modern games. Not to mention that the higher the resolution, performance would tank even harder.
CRTVs are not necessarily tiny, you know. Definitely not the ones in the 00s. If anything, they are bulky and heavy. Flatscreens got their name for a reason. No massive electron gun and magnets in back.
This isn't even that true. Take Call of Duty for example. They used to only have splitscreen on console but never on PC. Ever since Black Ops 3, they now have it built-in on PC too. Which is nice. Battlefront II never even originally had splitscreen on PC, but it does with Classic Collection. Although, with the original, you could use the same copy on multiple PCs and do LAN parties.
At 1:20 i actually like the original background better. It makes it look somewhat farther away and actually part of a 3D environment, whereas the new one may be better graphics, but it looks like a 2D drawing just plastered into a physical "movie-set" wall.
I criticize the CC as much as the next guy, but that dream was never a realistic request to ask for. That was not something that is feasible in the game engine, according to one of the top modders, IamaShaymin.
@@UnchainedEruption idk man, I think now that I know it’s literally just a lazy port with some graphics tweaks, my expectations are more realistic, but at the time I didn’t know the company and genuinely thought someone was coming in to build off the original’s framework and make the game we all wanted. If Skyrim modders can figure out how to make online multiplayer work in a single player RPG engine, anyone that tells you “it’s not feasible” just doesn’t care, or doesn’t get paid enough to care.
Ngl ive been playing the battlefront classic collection multiplayer a few days after launch and have been having a blast, the launch made me and my friends go insane, but it did feel nice getting to see 4k textures running at 60fps on one of my childhood games :), awesome video and appreciate the breakdown because comparisons are where its at!
ikr like have EA battlefronts visuals with the original battlefront gameplay. Would look so nice. But that wont happen, at least we got modders like HarrisonFog to make visual mods for the original games.
On launch night there was only a handful of servers but since there is a lot more and I haven't really had any issues, playing this game online is like a dream come true! BF1 n 2 and Halo 1 n 2 are my most played gamed ever and are huge parts of my childhood
working is kind of overstatement. They are just as shitty like the collection is after the first day. The collection first day was a shitfest, but after the second day they are equally shitty. Don't let other's expect a better online time just because they bought the original, cause they won't get it.
Another thing that is different is the lack of support for different languages. No audio of the original release's translation survived although the steam release also didn't have them. I wonder if the console versions of the classic collection shipped with that audio...
Not sure if this is what you are asking, but on both the PS5 and Switch version did seem to have an option to have text in another language, but the audio is still in English. My consoles are set to Spanish so that's how I found out.
@@TechSpec814 That is exactly the problem I meant. The og releases had localised audio and anything after the steam releases kept these out which always bothered me since I grew up listening to german. I once again would have to look into modding yet another version of battlefront just so I could experience it like I remember
@@DoktorObvious Dang really? I actually didn’t know the old games were like that. Sadly where I grew up, most games didn’t come in my native language so I was used to the English audio or text. It wasn’t till the PS3 and 360 era where I saw more games have more language options.
4x for every 1 level of scaling up, but when your going from what seems to be mostly 256 textures to 4k. no joke, its 16 times the detail LMAOO (technically) but as he said in the video that means nothing in actual quality since its not added detail, at best it might smooth some edges and thats it, the cost on memory is beyond not being worth it
Yeah, I understand the online multiplayer can be a bit iffy right now, but man, if these two games with the upscaling, don’t look how I remember them when I played them in high school lol
0:21 This is a prime example of why just upscaling textures isn't the answer when it comes to old games. These games were designed in an era when we were all still playing on low resolution CRT TVs. The image on the left has a resemblance of a blurred waterfall off in the distance which looked good on a CRT back in the day. The image on the right is a sharp high resolution abomination that has no possible way of looking good on any type of screen or monitor, the illusion is completely lost now and actually makes it look worse than the blurry image that was used originally...
An interesting point to discuss is that ventress wasn't in the original PC version of Battlefront 2, and while she is in this classic edition, it has apparently come out that Aspyr took an Asajj Ventress mod that added her back into the game for PC since she was cut from that version and just put it in the classic collection, ripping off iamashaymin's mod, now after they were caught there was an update to replace this with an actual ventress character instead of a reskin of aalya secura for the dark side. nowever because of this the knights of the old republic remake has been delayed for the time being.
The Game 1 and Game 2 comparisons were easy for me, all ya have to do is look at text size and format, kinda takes the guessing away from the guessing game x3
The gradual fade-in was there I think in the original CD-ROM version of Battlefront 1. I think the pop-in came about after GOG added some patches in their re-release of the game a few years ago.
Nailed the first comparison, but that's mostly to the UI, Battlefront2 is a game I still play from time to time, and I knew which ui was the right one.
Just get the old PC versions with mods including the ground to space mod that the collection doesn't have and you'll save on memory as well as being able to customize the games way more
The Classic Collection came out to crash and burn, and I'm all here for it. Nostalgic Star Wars fans ate this shit up even though it's an obvious cash-grab. Those games deserve an actual remaster which isn't half-assed, but the people who paid for this got exactly what they deserved.
You can actually rebind controls in the first game, its just not very obvious how to do it, but you can just scroll up and select the controls you want to change. That being said there still is no way to uninvert the flight control so it still needs to be fixed.
Funnily enough, the upscaling of the background textures makes a lot of the maps look worse because you got this 4k skybox contrasting with map textures from 2005 that are only slightly improved upon. I think Hoth was the only one to get away actually looking cleaner lol. I do find it funny. Aspyr had a license to print money with this opportunity, and chose one of the few routes that led to backlash. I just want a studio to make Battlefront 3 because I don't think much could be better than the first 2 games than the Steam version *at this point.*
I noticed a tint to the Original PC that I think looks better than the Classic, the tint makes some of the colours pop more, but it does dull the browns and oranges
answers at 6:07 got swapped, you played the OG as 'Game 1', then the classic collection as 'Game 2', but swapped the answers around (you can tell by the font sizes and clarity)
The thing is, for me, on planets like geonosis I actually prefer the original washed out version. I always figured as a trooper on the planet there’d be all kinds of haze and dust flying around and it would be harder to see those things so it was more immersive for me. Same thing with the other levels, whether it be sand or snow or whatever
God I forgot how good PS2 bespin looked, playing the classic collection I just thought "huh maybe it looked better in my memory" but nah it actually looked like a proper gas giant atmosphere
Honestly from what I'm seeing here this looks perfectly fine. It makes it so the Battlefront one is actually playable again in any capacity where it otherwise could not be and I'm all for that. If the market player isn't working very well I'm sure they'll make that better. I'm not sure why it's getting so much hate.
I bought Helldivers 2 a day before the trailer for classic collection dropped. For a moment I was disappointed, worried I had wasted my money on a shooter I wouldn't enjoy as much. But now that the cards have fallen, it seems I spent my money wisely.
4:50 how can anyone think replacing the dark moody coruscant with a overly bright version is "better lighting", the whole game is made brighter and it is *not* better
Thank you so much for mentioning the split screen difference. As a kid I had a PS2 which was also limited to 2 player spilt screen and I always dreamed of being able to do it with 4 as I know only the Xbox could do. So when the classic connection came along I foolishly thought they would finally bring the split screen to pc. And they did.. 2 player.. I'm cursed to never play 4 player split screen with these two of my favorite games for my entire life (yes I did look into emulation)
Yeah. It is unfortunate. I was spoiled by it and did not know the other versions did not have 4-player split screen. I guess the only way is to simply play the old ones for split screen and the new one for online play
I’m planning on gettin the new collection specifically so I can play handheld on Switch since the previous versions are not available on there it’s sadly my main option. That being said I absolutely will be waiting for a sale, that price tag is bonkers
I bought the Classic Collection on Switch day 1, and I can tell you now that it's far more worth it than the PC release. I've only had one instance of connection issues after playing about a dozen online matches, and the rest was a solid 60fps. But then only like 6 other people were playing the first couple days, it being the Switch, and... well, the Classic Collection lmao. But hey, it was also half the size of the Steam version, so whatever. That all said, Battlefront 2 crashes if you try to search of a Conquest match. I haven't checked if this happens with other filters, but quick join works just fine. how do you actually mess up a port of a 20 year old game
I'll stick with the OG ones, I don't really care about multi-player that much. I almost like the old textures and colors, it makes it feel more gritty and like you're actually in a war.
Great video as always. Thank you very much because I own the original Xbox version, played at 4K on my Series X, and this is the first video I see comparing the two. If I am not mistaken, the original runs at 30 fps and the Classic collection at 60 fps. And that is pretty much the only noticeable enhancement, along with the mild improvement to textures (which does not offset the downgrade in terms of file size, or the missing split-screen mode for 4 players). The online servers are arguably the selling point but they got off to a bad start. This is extremely unfortunate due to the vicious circle it may cause, i.e. will there be enough online players in the long (and not so long) term?
My expirience was this: got them for nostalgia, found 3 servers all full, when I was able to play the lag and crashes where horrendous, I ask a refound, that was my experience.
Such a shame. In my region it's going for under $20, but I might still pick up the old ones if I really want to. Tons of mods and more stability just seem like a better value.
The blurrier backgrounds of the original look better. They look more realistic. If you’re on a planet like Geonosis, the sky is most likely not clear and distant things would be slightly obscured or blurry. The new, super crisp backgrounds look so out of place.
I’m glad that I have the original games on Xbox. I got the Classic Collection to play with my friends on the Switch, and that is the only reason that I can justify buying this scrap heap. I hope Aspyr can repair this, but it may already be too late
Despite the poor reviews of the Classic Collection, it damn sure makes you appreciate the functionality of the original two games. The graphics look a lot better with the classic collection for consoles, but there is a slight difference on both PC versions. But I do have a strong love for the OG Battlefront 2 on the PS2.
in conclusion: An other example for the gaming industry being just that: an industry. The time when games were a project of passion and "love" are over and every game is nothing more than a product. If it was different then I´m sure Aspyr would have taken their time, figure out the best stuff from the many different versions, merge it into one solid collection, maybe even improve on what´s already there or fix some details or balancing. None of this has happened though because the only thing that matters is making some fast money by opening up some servers, change the plyer number from 32 to 64 and have the textures run through some upscaling AI program.
Adding all the 4K textures but not introducing any haze in the distance makes everything look super small and toy like. You shouldn't be able to see spaceships way on the horizon in full 4K detail. The old games might technically have much smaller resolution textures but at least they blend better with the background/environment.
I was super excited to play this on the Switch until I found out I couldn't invert my y-axis in game. I use a 3rd party controller which means I also can't modify my mappings in the switch settings. Huge freaking bummer
The backwards compatible Series X version suffers a significant drop in draw distance when playing on splitscreen mode in larger maps. This doesn't happen with the Classic Collection.
Last time I played this game, it was on a ps2. Literally every aspect of the game is improved and worth the $30 I’m genuinely satisfied. Never even touched multiplayer as a kid I couldn’t care less if it works.
I just wanna play split screen with my daughter, so I am on the same page. I bet it’ll drop down to $20 or $25 in a year but, I really don’t wanna wait.
Theres literally dozens of mods out there to literally make the games look far better than this that have been out for years now and for free. v1.5 for example, which is no more than 5gb worth of updating
You forgot to mention the missing cutscenes of the BF2 campaign in the Classic Collection, mainly the 501st journals that should play when finishing the campaign levels.
the kashyyyk guessing was so easy just because of the broken animations that are never presented in the OG unless seeing other units from a far distance from their low poly models
My rule was to never preorder any new upcoming games. The current state of the industry is so absolutely crap, that I now have to also avoid preordering ports of old games…. As heartbroken as I was, I’m glad PlayStation approved my refund…
Pretty sure they took out the ability for the computer controlled enemies being able to play as hero characters. I know it was an xbox only feature back in 2005 but why get rid of it?
Thanks for the to-the-point comparisons and letting the criticisms speak for itself. Not everything needs to be a 30 minute rant to get the point across.
2 big things that are different: the FOV of OG Battlefront 1 on consoles is super narrow, and that's fixed now. Also, 64 bots in instant action instead of 32. These differences add up to make a better experience.
