Another completely unscientific and subjective comparison of sound quality between two mixers.
This time, it's the brand new Rane Seventy Signature A-Trak Edition and the Rane Seventy-Two MK2

Great and only (!) sound comparison out there, thanks!! To anybody still on the fence, here is my impression: Besides this one the actual sound comparison to do - if you have the possibility to check the mixer out for yourself - is blending two songs together with all EQ knobs at default and the xf-setting at sharp. You will hear that there is wqy less rumble buildup on the atrak which would make that kind of blending difficult on mixers with more pronounced lowmids, it instantly sounds like a detailed mashup, stays sharp and punchy / poppy while it doesn‘t muddy up. What you will hear is an absolute blast of lowend transient detail and pop and a well distributed pressure across the whole frequency range, both basslines can still be distinguished and while the initial attack of drums blend together quite well when you mix on point there is a certain ‚hollowness‘ in the lowmids which opens up the lowend in a very special way with the 70 atrak. That said cutting / scratching feels different, as a certain layer of lowend thump is less pronounced, you have to work extremely precise and scratches may sound weaker and more pointy / attacky on headphones or smaller speakers but on bigger PA you have more detail and crisp down to the lower frequencies as they don‘t get bloated up by excessive (low-)mids. I believe the purpose of the atrak mixer is to have a boutique sound and color and a crispy punch which slightly alters songs and to even out handling two songs (mixing / juggling) without having to use the EQs that much to make them fit at the expense of some instant lowmid pressure / impact.

Thanks for the comparison. I can definitely hear it. Lotta good points made too!

From what I can hear through the gauntlet of YT compression the A-trak 70 sounds as if it has been eq'ed to have more audible low end, not more low end just more audible. I can hear deeper/lower bass frequencies via my studio monitors from the 72mkII but with my headphones I can "hear" more bass from the 70. From my 20+ years of audio work I would wager the Atrak70 is a little more user friendly when trying to wrangle music with tons of low end in any given situation. Likely easier to eq the varying quality of tracks encountered when dealing with digital audio. OR I hear no difference lol. Curios if this affects an analog source in a similar way? Dope vid. Thank you.

Yea, i believe they added a few cuts to the low mids and midrange to get the lowend to stand out more - so no boosts or anything and purely subtractive EQ on the curve. On headphones and my studio monitors, i still prefer the OG sound, but it might be a completely different thing on a huge system...

Have been using rane 72 for a year and I liked the sound of it just like you, but after long mixing i noticed that there's some mid frequency boosted and on some songs its frustrates. Maybe after long term use they notice same thing as me and flattened frequency on 70, at least thats how it sounds. 72 is a nice mixer but it lacks in audio in my opinion. Rich and punchy sound is nice maybe for chopping and cutting short hip hop mixes but long mixing and blending is very hard and not satisfying. Thanks for video👍👌

i think that ultimately shows how subjective this is as I prefer the more pronounced midrange on the OG 70/72 over the flatter sound in this Atrak 70. I DJ both quick cuts and long blending music too.

From what I’m hearing it’s kinda “6 of one and half dozen of the other”. There’s definitely a more squished & up front sound on the 72 which my mind automatically associates to the Pioneer CDJ sound - the Atrk 70 definitely has a more open sound/feel but would be easier to discern the differences with reference music that’s analog & dynamic (say something hi res & detailed like Steely Dan) in comparison to something slamming. Those dynamic ‘nuances’ really tend to show up the detail & depth of a converter/preamp etc. I recently got an S7 after 10+ years of loving my old trusty Rane 68 & I feel like the sonics with the Pioneer S7 are a lot more digi & brittle. With so much overlap in features between all the current available flagship mixers I would really like to see one that favours fidelity while retaining useful features for skilled dj’s of any genre or style. Perhaps the NXS2 is closer to the mark than I had thought (it has an insert, right?)

looking at rane mixers ,would really like the one with more bass and kick so the punchy outputs, which one is best for that, ? i have tried the atrak which ideal for the scratchers, which has clean and very enjoyable transitions, ATRAKS has tweeked the low ends on ATRAK,,,, Hoping the 72 mk2 has a better mid bass kick punch low end bass output...

I want a neutral mixer - if you want boosted EQ use the knobs or a compressor/limiter unit to suit your needs.
@jimdough2018
@jimdough2018 2 года назад
I believe there is no such thing as a neutral mixer, they all have coloration and different transient behavior to a certain degree, also dependent on conversion / headroom and how the mixer acts when pushed. There is always variation: speakers have a tolerance of e.g. + - 3db across a certain frequency range, that also means every single speaker has a variance, they may even have nearly the same response but different membrane material which makes them act different (ns10 speakers are basically paper / wood woofers e.g.). Same with mixers, behringer sound different than pioneer sound differen than rane and even the same models may sound slightly differences. I once had a faulty rane, got a replacement mixer and after the old one was fixed and returned, they still didn‘t sound the same, but then again some people can‘t even hear a difference in this comparison video.

@@dd_channel6433 if you’re mainly vinyl, I’d get a seventy (doesn’t have to be the atrak version). It’s still great for serato, but a lot of the 72 features are tied into serato. 70 is a bit simpler and more straightforward a mixer
@dd_channel6433
@dd_channel6433 Год назад
@@djsoo yes i know my friend, but i need it also for serato, for use with performance pads and stems, I think the quality of stems will be better than in flx 10 or Rane four , but sometimes i want to play just vynil .
@djsoo
@djsoo Год назад
@@dd_channel6433 the controls for stems and most functions are identical between the 70 and 72. You lose a couple of features, but most aren’t widely used (like slicer) The standard controls on the pads is perfectly fine. You do need to give up a pad mode to use them tho - which the 72 has the advantage since it has slicer (which you can change to stems)

Try Windows 11 vs Mac using a Rane 72 use Echo to start. Massive difference.

My bet: cut 100hz by -0.5db, boosted 50hz by +0.5db and, whats weird, boost on 1k by 0.5db (or maybe it's a phase shift caused by eqing the low end), compared to the 72 Also there's some kind of stereo wiedening on the A-Trak mixer

the sound-stage is slightly wider it seems on the ugly A-TRak - (does he self aggrandize much? LOL) . Something is definitely different in the stereo spread..between the two on top of whatever Eq difference there is

@@djsoo what's funny though is the kind phase shift on the mids in the stereo field. Listen closely... unlikely you've hooked something up the wrong way but there's definitely something going on with the stereofield. Anyway I'm coming back to this video a few times already.

One thing that is an interesting take, my qsc k12.2s have very bright highs that can be fatigueing when playing to a larger venue. The more subtle highs and mids of the 70 may actually help limit that.
