Yes, it is not abnormal. There are a significant number of ethnic Ukrainians fighting on the Russian side. One of the benefits of a *national identity is that ethnicity no longer fully dictates allegiance (e.g. WWII Italians fighting for USA, WWI germans fighting for Russia). Ukraine's original mistake in this war was removing Russian language rights which created ethnic loyalty issues within their country. Even then, a lot of ethnic Russians are still fighting for Ukraine. Edit: "country" or "national identity" not "nation state".

The western media spent 2 years saying over and over again that this wasn't about a NATO expansion. But if you look closely at the war, the leadership decisions and the geopolitics behind it, you'll see that it was ALWAYS about NATO. Its not just ukraine. Average Russian age is also 34-40. Both sides do not conscript below average 28. More people in both nations were born 1977-1989 than 1989-2004 for obvious reasons.
Notice how ukrianes only includes orthodoxy, which is the religion of most ukranians, but not hungarians, crimean tatars (despite claiming them as their own) or greek catholics. It shows the mindset of the ukranian state as whole, a state meant for a single nation only.

I like that in Russian ad they are mentioning Ukrainians as one of main ethnics in Russia, right before Russians themselves. And that makes sense as in Russia even before the conflict have resided at least 1 million of Ukrainians. Obviously they live their normal life without any pressure or whatsoever. Now there are around 3 million afaik.
I wish my countries made ads as religiously inclusive as the Russians. With an announcement like this it would be military (family tradition) but unfortunately my nations (yes, they are 2 and slaves to America) only defend the majority religion and despise the minorities. Auch wenn dieser Krieg ein trauriger Anlass ist, so ist es schön dass an der Front die Soldaten aus diesen unterschiedlichen Völkern zusammenhalten und Seite an Seite kämpfen. Wenn es gut geht, könnte Russland allen ein Beispiel werden wie Völkerverständigung und zusammenleben unter einem Dach funktioniert.

@@PentaRaus yes it is pretty accurate to actual warfare, the main usage of a machine gunner in this situation is to suppress enemy fire by firing, i mean the explosion part is not that accurate to the current warfare but this situation is pretty much possible, both sides trying to suppress the other by using bullets and granates, also possible is that they try to cover their comrades which are moving, basically by firing in the general direction of the enemy, they can protect advancing or retreating soldiers. Also the sound ofc has a psychological impact, especially to ukrainian troops which often do not want to fight
