You have error in your diagram the in of the piston pump is supposed to be out, while the out is supposed to be in. Please check. Good explanation, well done

What about reliability? I expect the gear pump to win on that regard due to simplicity. I believe that's the only style mercedes uses for example.

Sometimes there's a woman out there that pipes up with an opinion that's near fact and I swear it's just like she were related to EF Hutton. And then the rest of the callers don't know come here from sickem with all their subjective opinions. Gear pumps need different kinds of lubrication than rotary vane pumps. There's different kinds of transmission pumps. And someone will say you better not change transmission fluid and don't listen because the good transmission shops will tell you ignore that because it's b.s. fluid wears out. If you wait until the fluid has turned to varnish and then ran a solvent flush then that's not very bright. If you drop the pan and change the filter and fluid in the pan and then drill a hole in the pan and put in a drain and then drive 50 miles and then drop the fluid again until you're pretty sure you have all new fluid... depending on your quart capacity.. and adjust whatever bands if any, replace individual solenoids if you're having issues or the solenoid pack if that's the way it came because varnish ruins those solenoids... Dad and I never changed solenoids once on a 240,000 mile Dodge 46re but we didn't have to because the fluid was never allowed to turn to shit... there's a lot of opinions out there that haven't got a clue what they're talking about and that's why I mainly try to ignore them. But gears need different pressure additives than vanes and pistons.
