Dalton&Clarke are altogether more believable than the actors in the 2006 version. This kind of scene does not require "modern" acting but exactly what D&C are doing. She is not cold, in fact I think she's very good at portraying Jane's shock and horror at the prospect of living in sin, even if he is the love of her life. If anything, it is the "bed scene" in the 2006 version that is utterly out of place. Let us not forget: this is supposed to be a period piece, not just a beautiful love story.

I've always loved this version...I also feel it is truest to the book and period the book represents. Mr. Rochester's intensity and draw on Jane's character in this version is superior. The attraction between these two characters was never suppose to be a physical one initially...it was that they found true companionship in each other and found themselves individually through each others company. I like that this version preserved that....

Jane is described in the book by herself and others as tiny. Rochester is described as tall and imposing. TD and ZC are the perfect physical counterparts to the characters in the book. Their personalities and interactions with one another are also faithful to the book that was written in early 1800's. Jane was not outwardly flamboyant or emotional. This actress did an outstanding job of communicating Jane's strength, intelligence and compassion. TC did an exceptional job of communicating Rochester's wildness, darkness and vulnerability. This was an outstanding version of the story!

The absolute best Jane and Edward ever. I have seen every version of Jane Eyre and this one is by far the best followed by the 2006 version for me.

Why didn't they include the line "your heart must be bleeding then.." such a passionate line...Jane was so ahead of her times..she didn't create a scene like Rochester expected or had a row with him ...she sat calmly & reasoned and made her choice...salute to Bronte's writings...❤️

Nudity & torrid love scenes are inappropriate for Jane Eyre and would go against the period. They still can express their love and desire for each other , as they do here, with out stripping off and hopping into bed with each other. This verson comes VERY close to the book, even using it's prose often.People have to read the book to get a better idea and also this isn't just a physical desire or relationship between these two, it's much, much deeper and mature !

This was by far one of the best renditions of this scene from the book! Dalton was amazng, he made me feel Rochester's sadness just like in the book.

Well remember that in the story he was also a desperate man, that had desired to be a family man, but was trapped into an awful, tragic ,arranged marriage by his father for money, not really by his choice. Don't be too hard on him, not even Jane was. He was used by his family.

Timothy Dalton is 'way too handsome to be Bronte's Rochester, but aside from that, is perfect. Anyone who thinks he's too melodramatic and OTT should actually read the book. The book Rochester is even more emotional and self-pitying than this, and THAT IS BRONTE'S POINT. He is not some ideal romantic hero, but a very flawed man.

The first time I watched this scene it was almost painful--you hurt for Rochester, but you're also a little embarrassed because most people's first instinct is to try to protect their emotions. They retreat, and Rochester pursues. Your heart pounds, you want to look away, but you can't. He's letting it all out, and there's nothing you can do but watch until the end. Beautiful acting.

When she stumbles and he catches her. Breathes her in. It's wonderful. He and Toby Stephens in the 2006 version are the best.

For those of you who are saying that Clarke's performance is a bore, then I think you are only proving that Clarke made an excellent performance. Jane Eyre is not enigmatic or anything special aside from her intellect. She is meant to be a boring little plain Jane. Go read the book. I cannot imagine any other people than Dalton and Clarke when I read the dialogue between them. If you prefer a more interesting Jane, that is fine, but it is not what Bronte wrote or intended.

I love that one moment he's calm, composed, then the next he's ashamed then angry and back to gentle and tender. His mood swings are the stuff of legend.

I completely agree. You took the words right out of my mouth! I love everything about this version. The book is one of my favorites and I was SO glad to see that Tim and Zelah did it so much justice. :)
