With many thanks again to Marta for her wonderful box of De Atramentis and KWZ inks! Today I'm testing the first of these inks using my trust TWSBI Eco. And much fun was had! I've discovered probably my favourite brown ink, for a start!

I got KWZ as a sample when I bought other stuff, and it was such a nice surprise. Very good inks!

Nice to see the first ones on paper - and to hear that you liked them. Also, yes, pretty much all of the standard KWZ inks have that vanilla scent to them - the IG (iron-gall) don't. Cappuccino is probably the wettest of the bunch and has a drying time longer than typical for that brand. Can't wait to see some of my daily workhorse ones next time.

Hi, Marta, and thanks again for sending the inks. I thought it would be safer to go through the smaller pots first, but next week with luck I'll be onto the others with a 1.1mm nib. I do love the odour given off by the KWZs. It's lovely having that as you write, isn't it!
@MartaZobeniak

@@writerlywitterings It certainly is. :) An ink miser would certainly help with that, but I believe you won't have any issues with the next ones.

Thank You. Thanks to this video I have spent the better part of £50 on KWZ inks and I adore them! For me they are a bit too wet for 1.1 stubs (my preferred nib), but work beautifully with a Fine nib. My current inked up pens area TWSBI Eco (Blue - F) with Azure 3 and Faber-Castell Loom (F) with Honey and for signing stuff a TWSBI GO! (1.1) with Warsaw Dreaming.

I admire you being so well-organized. Plus your inks reviews make my heart beat faster, I am surrounded by pens and immersed in inks. As for the small containers, I usually use a syringe with a needle to fill cartridges.
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 3 года назад
I know a lot of people who do the same, Prospero. I don't personally, because once I reused a cartridge, and the pen I put it into had a slightly different sized feed. The cartridge (unknown to me) fell off inside the pen, and I ended up with a pocket full of ink!

I love the TWSBI Go pens. They are ideal for reviewing inks too, because they are so quick to fill and empty and rinse clean, and then there is the lovely 1.1mm nib, which shows off shading and the colour variation with thick or thin lines - just an ideal pen to use daily!

Thanks for showing the inks. I’ve never used KWZ inks, so it was nice to see them. I’m told that the smell is actually from the biocide in them and not vanilla! Some people don’t like it.

Re: epidermal hygiene - I have lately turned to household chlorine bleach, afterf aday of cleaning pens in which my hands were sporting multi-color stains. Quite effective, smells lousy, and surely dries out the skin. BTW, I use a spray bottle for application.
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 4 года назад
Yes, I've returned to concentrated bleach too. I've an uncle who used to work in the dyeing industry, and he told me that all the workers used to have a bucket of bleach. Every day, they would dip their hands in that regularly to clean off old dyes. And he swore that his skin had never felt so soft!

I have started testing this optik paper from Oxford and I like it quite a bit. It’s almost completely bleedproof. I need to keep abusing it to see. But it has worked well. I also need to try of Sheening inks show. I love the dog biting nail sounds, nice atmosphere, nothing better that dog and cat noises. Unfortunately I can’t see the colours very well in this light 😭 I’m going to have to start a campaign to provide you with natural light bulbs, because I love your videos. These eppendorf sample tubes are just so cute. They remind me of my time in the lab. Can I ask how do you clean the nib between testing? I want to try this method of testing inks. Just dipping them in water and drying them?
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 3 года назад
Sorry about the light - it's actually my daylight bulb that I use when painting, but the camera was less than helpful with some videos. I think I have some better settings, but what I really need is a new camera! Thanks for the compliments - I'll pass them on to the nail-biting hound - and I'm glad you enjoy the videos. As to how I clean the pen - I used a TWSBI Go, because it's quick and easy to fill, empty, and flush. A press of the plunger, and the pen is done. Very quick and easy. I used two buckets full of water. One I used to flush old ink from the pen, and when it was already clean-looking, I pressed the plunger down, then filled it with clean water from the second bucket, and emptied it into the inky water. I did that three or four times with each ink. Oh, and I used a 1.1stub on the Go so that I could show shading and outlining on the page. As a result I grew to adore my TWSBI!

Hand sanitizer works with ink stains on your fingers. It obliterates some, but lightens others so you can tackle the rest of the stain with soap. As for the inks, I'm really taken with Menthol. It calls to mind 1950's soda shops and car interiors. The only KWZ ink I own though is Honey....it's an absolutely glorious golden brown.

I do, but it takes me a while! Leuchtturms are 250 pages, and my Rhodias are larger, but of course they're A5. I'm trying to think of a B5 notebook supplier. I think you'd have to go to a Japanese manufacturer, not a European one. Midori, perhaps, or one of the others? Sorry I can't be more help!
@TipsterStu
@TipsterStu 3 года назад
@@writerlywitterings that's cool ... explains why they're harder to find... I'm settling for A5... I liked writing 3 pages of B5 a day as a short story/stream of conscious... for A5 I just do 4 pages a day for now but I'm eating up notebooks this way :)

Cleaning inky fingers! OMG! It's a mark of pride to be displayed like the battle scars of the knights of old. It is the flag of our inky/ pen/ notebook culture that sets us apart from the masses of the ballpoint pen drones and a symbol of fellowship to those who share our passion. And it just takes too much effort for what it's worth to get it off. But the first part of this statement is the important part.

@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 4 года назад
Hi, Moti, Yes, I do understand. My problem is, I'm using an old Sony camera which cannot move the screen sideways. That means I have to be in front of the camera or behind it, and although I try to zoom in a little, while standing behind the camera it is a real problem, because often I'll have the camera zoomed in on the wrong place, and it doesn't show the nib or the writing. One day I hope I'll be able to afford a newer camera with a screen that folds out to the side. It'll make life easier. In the meantime, I do try to take photos of the pages and put them up at the end of the video. What I think I will do soon is have a chat about all the different inks I've reviewed in the last year.
