Comparison Of Stub, Architect, Cursive Italic, and Oblique Fountain Pen Nibs

In this video I thought I would do a comparison of several nib grinds to use a reference. Next time you are thinking of getting a custom nib grind, this may help.
Stay to the end where I show a cool feature of the oblique nibs where they can look like an architect grind. This is why I really enjoy oblique nibs, as there are like the Swiss Army knife of nibs. Can be used like a cursive italic, oblique, and architect.
In this video the nibs shown are:

Glad you find them helpful. I try to do videos that I would have found helpful when I'm buying a pen, deciding on a nib, learning about grinds, etc.

Flippi'n marvelous educational video. Have been mucking around with fountain pens since age 11. Got a Parker Duofold Jr. for my 11th birthday, at my request. It still works perfectly. I will look for the Esterbrook w/xx broad left oblique soon as today. Thanks again for the great video. I also subscribed, and liked immediately.

Great! It is really useful to see the versatility of the oblique grind compared with the architect grind. You've convinced me that I need to try an oblique some time, or just try to grind my own.

I have a Leonardo Momento Grande. 1.1 stub. I noticed that mine too writes a bit thicker. I thought there was something wrong with it. Glad to see it’s just how they are.

Great video for me it’s all about specialty nibs. I bought a Jinhao Fude nib pen. Playing about with I found it worked best as a broad architect. Great fun. Lovely effects. Impressed with the Esterbrook pen you demo’d. Lovely ink as well. Catch you next time. D

Once you get a selection of XF, F, M,... Time to play around with other grinds. That esterbrook is really nice but very picky on the sweet spot. Kinda why I ground my own obliques so I can make the sweet spot right where I likes it 👍

Can be tricky finding the sweet spot the first time you use it. But once you get it down, obliques are fantastic grind!

Great vid! I stick to either nibs that have extreme flex, like the Brause Rose, or nibs that dump alot of ink....like Goose or Turkey quill feather cut to specification. Also like the steel italic nibs because they dump alot of ink as well. I have made a “frankenpen” out of a Noodlers Ahab, outfitted with a ebonite feed sitting in a Brause Rose so that it can be a continuous flow...as opposed to dip. It fits very well on the Ahab feed and can be heat-set with hot water very easily. All the joy of a “wet noodle” without the cost of one. Quills are alot of fun, have you ever tried one?

I tried using a Broad nib right after watching this video, with the idea of considering a custom nib. I just cant use bigger than medium. I feel like I'm writing with a sharpie marker. LOL

I find a medium is too wide for me lol. But grinding a M, B, BB to oblique.. Love using them 😍

I gotta admit that broads are the smoothest writing experience ever though. But yes with how slippery they are, and how much ink they use up, and how sharpie-like they are, I just use them as grind practice.

Hey thanks buddy. I feel my writing has a long way to go. It's better than my first videos I did for sure. But it's funny, I can do my best writing then give the pen to my wife & hers is instantly better without even trying 🤣.

Video was great. Have you ever tried using a belt sander or something mechanically like that to grind your nibs (not the polishing portion)? I was looking into getting one, but currently I only have sets of different grit wet stones.

I might look into a Dremel setup with rotary disks. But since I only do nibs here & there I haven't bothered. I just use my whetstones that I sharpen knives & razors with. Then touch up on my micromess pads.

Ah, here's a question/video suggestion for you in the future: Do you prefer to write with your pens all in the same way, or do different pens make you adjust and write with them in different ways?

Sure I can do a video like that. I typically look to fill a need/role/function with each pen. That sorts guides me on nib selection & grinds

This video was extremely informative. However, I just recently starting collecting fountain pens, as a beginner I went with the least expensive pens. I have a Jinhao X159 w/Fine #8 nib & Jinhao X50 w/Fine #6 nib, PenBBS 323 w/Medium #6 nib and a Majohn P136 w/1.1 #6 nib. Going forward, I would like to experiment with some different nib sizes and styles. Can I accomplish with any of these pens? Should I buy a more expensive pen and use that to try out different nib sizes and styles? As always, thank you for the great content!

That is a Marte Modena, they arent around anymore. But the pen is VERY close to a Delta Dolce Vita

Wonderful video! For the fine architect nib, is this suitable for a daily writer or is it fatiguing to write with? I ask because I am getting my daily writer ground at the sf pen show and I’m torn between a rounded nose grind or architect.

I really really enjoy a fine cursive italic, probably my favorite. An oblique medium or broad is really great too. For architect, Iike XF or F. Thicker than that I find it's too much.

Great video. Still a bit new to the hobby, what would be nice to know other than seeing samples and maybe not understanding the nuances of each grind or what they are to most accentuate as they can look similar, is to perhaps go a bit more in depth of the differences and where each shines the best. I have generally small writing both in cursive as well as print so I have 14 pens and with the exception of one medium and one EF, they are all Fine. Not sure what would give my writing more flare and still be condusive to how I write.

I'm going to do a video on how each nib is ground. For you, I'd check out a fine cursive italic and/or fine architect. An OM might be good too as you can tighter & smaller writing than you can with a regular medium

This video is so old I probably won't get a response. But what's the difference in a stub and cursive italic? They seem to have the same effect as when you write with the stub facing a corner of the page instead of perpendicular to your guide line. It seems like the effect from oblique, stubs, cursive italic is the same but the difference is how you hold the pen? Is that true? Like oblique holds the nib at a cant, cursive italic you can write normally and get the stub effect, stub you write with the nib 45 degrees off of perpendicular to your guide lines etc?

That is a shadding ink, shimmer ink has small particles in it. I can't say for sure as this video was a while back but it sort of looks like Monterverde DC Pen Show 2018. Here's a link to the ink 😉 amzn.to/3vHXcwC

Hey, do you know ANY nib, that is neither fude nor stub (perfectly if flex) that can write thick upstrokes and thin downstrokes?

Think that would be called the Unicorn nib! The only thing I could think of would be using a Zoom nib. Hold it very vertical for the down, and at a lower angle for the up strokes. Can't have different thicknesses on up/down or right/left without changing the contact point on the page.

You can do that with a flex nib. But in your first comment you were asking about thick upstrokes & thin downstrokes

Yes, sort of like trying to push a rope. Some things are only meant to work in a certain direction.

They don't have a one specific utility. Its just another option when it comes to nib choices and people can use them however they choose.

@@Doodlebud Bright and fine idea .Try him writing some of the nibs on video if his handwriting good. Iranians are fine caligraphers . Farsi style is the commen Arabic style in Iran but their are many other Arabic styles . It will be fine if he can Farsi style.You see the rounded nib is widly used in the muslim world but most using Architect or It cursive left handed obique nibs or simple Arabic or Farsi cut nibs ( differs litle bit from Architect grind). Gave him a medium CI, Fine Architect, & a semi flex nib to ask him which he prefers to do the characters

@@Doodlebud semi flex grind has no bearing in our disc bec it's pure Latin grind but Arch + left hand oblique are. You see it is unfair when showing such nibs and not writing Arabic calig with them bec you miss at least 50% of the purpose with the nib creation in the first place. You see Arabic calig is used from Marrocco to Japan and Malaysia Indonesia and Old soviet Union. It is very big area. And don't forget Hebrow. They used also Arabic grind nibs.

@@Doodlebud I saw a vid on North Corean fount pen on ebay which has rounded grind on the front and Architect on the back of the nib bec Arch grind suite the Corean and Chinese handwriting better. I will put the link to you later.

Pointless. All personal ground nibs that cannot be purchased so what is the point of this? Who writes this big and for what reason? Signs? None of these can be used for taking notes or writing letters or writing in journals!
