1:26 We used to have these trains in Moscow until 2010 (they were gracefully retired) on lines 1, 3, 4, and 7. The interior is almost alike the Ečs trainset in Prague Metro. Would love to take a ride on these trains one more time.

is the Em508/509 different from Ezh?

It's the same as the Ečs, the Ečs was a version of the Metrovagonmash E which was exported to Czechoslovakia.

That’s some characterfull rolling stock. What strikes me about those soviet metro stations is how posh they look. Above the surface the buildings for the common people are kind of basic and rough but below the surface no expense has been spared. Really interresting, those stations look like palaces sometimes. They must have taken a lot of pride in the design of these stations. They also look quite clean and well maintaned, what a difference with world above ground.

Not all of them like that... Kiev and Kharkov metro were built pretty late, so most of the stations are like these. But back in the 60-70, when Kruschev ruled the country, there was a period when when these architecture details were considered non-functional and unnecessarily expensive, so stations were built cheaply (though structure quality was still very good), and without any meaningful decorations (one mosaic wall at best). There are some stations like this in Saint-Petersburg and tons of these in Moscow (where the worst example of these are overground ones, they are especially dull). They look dull both inside and outside, though they are still clean and good maintained. Upd: actually, I think Kiev metro was built somewhere around these times, so I think there are some dull stations aswell

I like the palatial stations. The escalator near the beginning reminds me of the one at Southgate with its lights. I see the stations all appear to have different decor. Some London Underground stations had various coloured tiling to make it easier for people who couldn't read to recognise their station. The train noises sound to me like the older London underground trains. I'm glad that the Kharkiv metro and trolleybuses are in a better state than the trams, but I suspect there are some areas the trams serve that the metro and trolleybuses don't, which would lose out if they got rid of the trams altogether.

The first train looks like the classic E train from Mitishyn factory (factory name was written in azbuka on the plate), these were in variant ECS riding in Prague until 1997. The newer train seems to be the same as in Prague which has trains 8171, those are also in Budapest, and they have been both modernised. Prague modernisation is called 8171-M. I see that both ukraine trains have still the old interiors and have been not modernised. You can ride such trains in Prague only on historic vehicle rides.

Actually here in Kharkiv we don't have to constantly handle cash. We have ticket that looks like green card. You can put some amount of money there (for example 200 UAH) and here you go. You can travel metro as long as you have enough money on the ticket. And in Kyiv you can pay with card but its only the one terminal on the station.

Hi, a bit random but a friend of mine (YT channel name is LiftyGamez) in London just visited the Hilton London metropole. Apparently one of the express service lifts in the set of two is being replaced or modernised, while the other is still yet to be shut down for upgrading so you might want to visit it. Also, that lift which you claimed in your URBEX video which had its ropes cut is apparently running again and it’s very epic with that Long indicator on the ground floor and original plastic buttons unlike the other two service lifts which had their buttons replaced to vandal resistant express buttons. I fear that that epic lift high rise 1970s express would be going as well with the lift upgrade so I think you should head down there if there is time for you.

Did any of the Kharkov E type Metrovagonmash ever do the one second light shut off when entering the station? in 2009 all type E trains on the Kiev red line did that, just like those from when I originally visited the USSR in August 1990. The same is true for St Petersburg lines 1 2 and 3, but that was ten years ago. I think most type E cars have since been refurbished so the lights are continuously on.
@MichaelG_
@MichaelG_ 4 года назад
The most recent I was in Kharkiv was in August 2019 and they still do that due to the contact rail being switched from one side to the other. I don't think this is a fixable issue inside the actual train.

I’m surprised they are still using the E series trains. I guess Moscow Metro gives hand-me-down trains to the smaller former Soviet metro systems.

When I was in Kharkiv I did not see a single bus the entire time I was there. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. I seems that Kharkiv does not have any public service buses. There are public trolleybuses and private crazy buses, but no regular buses.

@@benolifts Bus services are operated by private companies in Khrakiv. There _are_ traditional buses, they are used along with marshrutkas (I like the way you call them as "crazy buses" :D ), but overall, their number is relatively low comparing to marshrutkas, so it may feel like there are no buses at all.

@maxischew514
@maxischew514 4 года назад
I'm pretty sure all the metros were almost the same.
@murrmiaow
@murrmiaow 4 года назад
All Soviet metro systems were built to operate the same trains, same station equipment and route automatics, etc. So, basically, yes, all the exUSSR systems look pretty much the same. Another peculiarity is that the metros were designed to be a "wonder castle for the working class" of sorts, so you'll definitely see lots of marble, granite, fancy lighting fixtures and other decorations that may seem unnecessary. This also dictates a certain style. The latter is seen less and less at new stations added after the USSR.
@benolifts
@benolifts 4 года назад
I wouldn't say they all look the same. There are a lot of variation. I have been on metros at Sofia, Prague, Warsaw, Budapest, Kyiv and Kharkiv. All have had a different feel. Kharkiv and Kyiv are the most classic of all. But these still had differences from each other, and both are worth visiting. The main difference is the trains. Kyiv has (these are my general descriptions of the trains, I don't know the exact model numbers)... MVM E, MVM 81, MVM 81 Alien, and MVM E modernized with AC VF. While Kharkiv has... MVM E (but a different version to Kyiv), MVM E green version, MVM 81, MVM 81 with DC PWM, MVM 81 with DC PWM and spooky lighting, MVM E modernized (but with original motors). To be honest, a lot of modern metro systems are boring and repetitive, especially ones in spain.

Almaty was built during Soviet times but because the USSR fell before it could open there wasn’t enough money to complete. When there was money they instead used modern Hyundai Rotem trains built to soviet dimensions.
