There are so many good sounding speaker in the market, that you couldn't go wrong buying any of them, but there is something about the aesthetics of the Klipsch's speakers that draws me to them. The color scheme are just beautiful. The copper woofers staring at you, draws the attention of most who visited me. From family, friends and the internet/cable technicians, to the furniture delivery guys. Everyone complements my speakers setup as soon they walk in my theater and audio listening area. They also sound good. When i close my eyes they make me feel as if i were in front of the stage of a live concert, something that i dont get from other very good sounding speaker that just feel as you were in front of a set of speakers.

When I bought my RF7 IIs and RC64 II, what sold my wife was the Cherry wood and the copper woofers. Even though they are massive she still likes the looks but perfers the grills on now. Makes them a little less "in your face" so to speak.

I just purchased Marantz PM8006 integrated amplifier and also the Klipsch RP5000F. So many reviewer's liked the RP600M that I felt that I could not go wrong. After listening to several speakers of the same size, I'm very happy with the Klipsch.

I bought the the RP-8000F (+Yamaha AS501) after I heard the RP-600M. I don't have much experience with speakers, but i own a few $1000ish headphones. I'm so blown away with the sound that I haven't touched any pair of cans at home since these 60lbs big boys became part of my furniture.

Hi Steve, I really appreciate your reviews. Moreover, I truly appreciate the fact that you cover the entire price spectrum of quality audio. I remember reading your reviews (in some obscure audio magazine) from the early 90’s and looking forward to each monthly issue and the wonders they would provide, affordable and unattainable (for me). The RU-vid format has certainly given you more flexibility in what you review and has improved your content imho. That’s not a knock on the former magazine at all, they do a decent job as well, even now. Glad you are still doing this.

The obvious reasoning behind ports is to tune an enclosure to a certain frequency which is derived through various parameters specific to your drivers and how much air they can move and the volume of air in the space in which they are enclosed. The tuning is then achieved through selecting the appropriate area the port's exit and it's length. In this case, your question being about the shape of the port, less obviously known/or considered is that large enough volume of air leaving a port at a high enough velocity will cause an audible distortion in certain scenarios that is commonly called "chuffing" if I'm not mistaken. This is frequently mitigated by using tapered entries and exits to the port as the chuffing occurs when the air strikes a corner/edge. Tuning enclosures is always a balancing act between geometric limitations and maintaining fidelity and tone. I'm guessing the JBL having/needing 2 smaller ports instead of one larger one is the 2.5 way design causing the 2 woofers to need/benefit from separate air spaces since they're handling different loads and of dynamic and spectral content in response to how they're crossed over. Just some stuff to keep in your back pocket.

Hi Steve. My friend has the Klipsch 6000 version of these. Hear what you're saying, they were very fast, lots of sharp edges, very precise, like you said. But, after a few months now, he has said that they have chilled out a bit and are now a bit warmer, fuller, sharp edges sanded off, but still has all that amazing detail.

@carl Thanks. So my Wharfedale D220 are more suited to my Yamaha RXV677. So upgrading to Horn based or metal Tweeters may sound bright on Yamaha. So if I have to upgrade say like Klipsch or SVS speakers then Marantz or Denon should be better.

I own a pair of RP 6000fs hooked up in my living room as a 2.0 setup for 50/50 music and tv and I can tell you that these speakers can rock, and do not miss a subwoofer with these. Previously I owned a pair of vintage Polk monitor 5s and the Klipsch are a huge step up, very dynamic and lively speakers.

The number one, most immediately noticeable (and best) quality of the JBL Stage A190 speakers is the profoundly good 3D imaging. It’s remarkable because that’s supposed to be that big difference between the super high-end and affordable speakers. You’re supposed to have to spend megabucks before you get truly well-behaved speakers that project a 3D soundfield with tremendous precision. Here, you get that “high-end audio hologram effect” with $1000 per pair speakers. That’s less than the sales tax on speakers I’ve heard, that were no better at imaging, and I’d love to see how a number of those speakers would fare in a blind listening test - against these floorstanders. In conclusion, you do not need fancy materials and high prices to create a pair of extremely competent tower speakers that do just about everything a audio enthusiast could want. Simply put, an aluminum dome tweeter and a pair of polycellulose woofers can do really good work together if you get the cabinet, waveguide and crossovers right. In recent years JBL has shown that it’s got a good bead on how to build a good waveguide and that’s apparent when you hear these towers. JBL Stage A190 speakers clearly demonstrate that good engineering can deliver exceptional audio performance that’s also affordable. If they size and the looks of these speakers agree with your aesthetic sensibility and domestic reality, then giving a pair of these A190s an audition is a good idea. Of course, if you're dead set on Klipsch, well, more power to you as well. I've enjoyed and listened to both - like Steve.

@67amko
@67amko 4 года назад
True that, having just bought a pair of Stage A190s (USD MRP 1000 on the JBL website, obviously cheaper elsewhere online). Reference Steve's review of the A170: having tested (prior to subsequent purchase) the flagship A190s vis-a-vis the Klipsch RP 5000F, the A190s ( the entire JBL Stage line, in fact) offers tremendous bang for the buck at nearly half the price, while sounding a tad more refined on the high end (excellent crisp reproduction, lovely texture), thanks to the horn tweeter design (JBL terms it 'high definition imaging wave guide'), and phenomenal mid-bass thanks to the 'long-excursion powered subwoofer' (stop me if I'm regurgitating JBL's marketing copy) . But the number one, most immediately noticeable (and best) quality of these speakers is the profoundly good 3D imaging. It’s remarkable because that’s supposed to be that big difference between the super high-end and affordable speakers. @C Burgess Hi. The A190s are around 48 inches in height, plus another inch and a quarter since they are currently on outriggers on a tiled surface, so no spikes - since we need our rooms to be as cool as possible, given our Indian summers. I happen to be tall, and usually sit on an armchair. Still, I would say that my ears would be 4-5 inches below the wave guides (horn tweeters?). More importantly, my room, while not quite an acoustic nightmare, is forgiving and the first thing I did after getting the A190s was to add the JBL Stage A120P subwoofer. I'm a bit of a basshead, so I can live with a bit of distance between the height of my ears and the tweeters. Hope this helps.

Typically, the same line of speakers will sound very similar as it uses similar drivers and the crossover was designed by the same person/people. The polar response will vary because multiple drivers adds in other pros and cons and interacts with the room differently than would a simple two driver design.

I was wondering if you had ever considered allowing us, your subscribers, to sample the speakers that you test. You could do this by setting up a reusable test area by defining the test speaker locations and the sampling microphone location (monaural would be the least complicated) in that test area. You choose about 3 different pieces of reference music, approximately 1 - 2 minutes long each that would be used for each speaker test. The HQ microphone, media playback device, pre-amp, amp, cables, and test speaker / microphone placement would all be the same for each test speaker recording. A reference test tone of approximately 1000 Hz would have to be played though each set of test speakers while adjusting the amplifier volume so that the VU indictors on the recording device was the same for every set of test speakers (maybe “0” VU). This would compensate for the differences in test speaker efficiencies. The recording device’s controls would also have to be logged and setup to be the same for each test speaker recording. The three pieces of reference music would then be recorded and attached to your review. We could playback recordings of as many test speakers as we like from your reviews, for comparison. You might say: “how will this allow the subscribers to hear the differences between the test speakers?” Well, as long as we compare the different test speaker recordings on our speakers the same way every time, we will be able to get a better taste of the sound coming from the speakers that you are reviewing! It will not be exactly like standing in front of the review speakers but will allow a fairly good comparison, especially if we play back these test recordings on our AUDIOPHILE SYSTEMS! Thanks for all the good videos!!!

One thing I discovered about 15 years ago which if you can afford to do this and you listen to a lot of music you should do this which is. Brian speakers that give you the ability to listen to what you like to listen to through a particular speakers so if let's say you like a really good keyboard and piano maybe you'd want the JBL stage setup on the other hand if you like really good heavy guitar you might choose the clips 8000 F series And then again if you're into more orchestral type music you might want to choose the banging all of a sudden 89 saucer speakers in pairs which can be fairly expensive but they are so worthwhile if you're not listening to heavy percussion associated.. I guess what I'm saying is that if you can afford to do so separate speakers for separate Vikings in your music library it's not so strange to sit in a room witha full series of 79 speakers split up into three different manufacturers so a set of nine speakers from one company a set of 9 for another company and a set of nine speakers from you yet a third company because they all sound different and they all do a great job at listening to certain pieces of music from your library so why not do that all you need is a speaker switcher and you can still use the same amplifier preamplifier or forever that you originally bought to be Happy Wheels here's a piece of very good advice the most important piece in your audio system is the speaker system so choose your speakers first then by your amplifier then by your preamplifier then or by your AVR and make sure that it has approximately twice the amount of wattage available over and above with the speakers is capable of handling to get the best possible sound from the speakers that you've chosen in remember one last very important thing all your speakers must be all either 4 ohm or 8 ohm never mix 4 ohm and 8 ohm speakers in the same set as 9 speakers using one individual AVR amplifier it will harm your AVR and definitely destroy your amplifier..this is very good advice I would suggest that you use it

I would really like to see klipsch do a 3rd woofer and cross it over as a 2.5. Keep the 2 subwoofers for bass because I think they have great bass with good quality power my 8’s get a lot of deep bass response however adding a 3rd subwoofer and crossing it over as a mid speaker I think would really bring the klipsch up in refinement. It would really help address what I feel is lacking on a klipsch speaker and add to making it a more refined speaker. If you think the new klipsch series is bright. You really need to break them in with a minimum of 50 hours and you will hear a big change. I would hope they would keep their liveliness even by adding a solid mid range speaker.

The key word here is compression tweeter, the horn just makes the sound more spacial and what a horn this Studio series 5 has! Can’t believe that speaker was out in 2011. Steve Guttenberg Audiophiliac I run a Tannoy 12” 150w active sub wired into my Royd Minstrels. Works really well for movies from a 55” Samsung LED, optical out to a Schiit Modi 2 Uber into a NAD C320 amp. Definitely the biggest problem in the audio world here in the U.K. is the disappearance of listening room audio stores. More important than trying on clothes for size is listening to audio gear before you buy.

Hi Steve I always appreciate your reviews and your expertise. You and I are probably around the same age so I feel that you can answer a lot of questions that the younger folks can’t because they weren’t around the times of the products that I grew up with were available so here’s my question I recently restored an old pioneer SX 1080 and a Sansui G 8000 I am reforming a pair of pioneer HPM 1100 speakers and I also own a pair of older JBL monitors and some advent speakers. I’ve recently purchased a new home and want to step up to more modern equipment including perhaps some surroundsound gear but my heart is really into vintage sound records and the like I own tape decks and a real to reel. Based on what I have said in the equipment I’ve described in my age what kind of experience well I have with purchasing new equipment such as the new speakers And the newer amplifiers will I be blown away or is the old equipment still have merit in its own right in terms of sound quality and experience

Thanks Steve I was looking at the Klipsch speakers when I ran across the new Andrew Jones designed AP-FS52 speakers and bought a pair.....couldn't be happier, they totally blew me away and fir 89 bucks a piece...come on that's just nuts Now...im still wanting a pair of Klipsch so this review helped convince me they will be different enough to complement each other,. I think my Pioneers would be similar to the JBLs

I have a pair of Klipsch RF-8000f's dedicated for music and a pair of RP-6000f's and RP-600c for hometheater, not quite done with my set up yet. I'm leaning towards RP-502s for my surrounds. Anyhow, I love the way my RP-8000f's sound. With my music. I have noticed that they can get a little bright, but I also noticed that it depended on how the music was recorded. I listen to CD's and different Cd's can sound different, some are louder and some are softer. My speakers are also in Walnut finish. I chose the walnut to break away from the consistant black finish.

Honest review: Both are excellent speakers for me,which is better, it is impossible to say. but each one has the signature of the manufacturer: Klipsch: Loud , dynamic with a tendency to highs. JBL: Natural Sound, tight bass, quick response. It is a matter of personal preference. JBL Studio 570 would be the ideal comparison but are discontinued Thanks to share.

The rp line is considerably better than the Stage line....the build quality even tells the the tell the RP lines build is much more high-end...this really isn't a contest the Stage a170 should be compared to the r610f...the RP line at it's price even the tax tariff price doesn't really even have a direct competitor...😉

it would be more fun to compare the JBL L100 to the Heresy III or Forte III
@BunnyFooFnFoo
@BunnyFooFnFoo 5 лет назад
The L100s/L112s are power hungry (91/89 DB). The brutish efficiency of the Heresys (99 db) make short work of the JBLs in all conditions except "mosh pit" volume levels. I owned L112s and sold them when I bought Herseys. Quite literally, the Herseys sip powe while blasting sound where the L100s need 10x the power to make the same sound levels. As I mentioned, the Herseys were awesome when they were moderately loud. The JBLs were really loud but it took a subwoofer and a 1kW amp to get there.
@tsamplifiers6493
@tsamplifiers6493 5 лет назад
@@BunnyFooFnFoo Is it all about volume?
@BunnyFooFnFoo
@BunnyFooFnFoo 5 лет назад
@@tsamplifiers6493 Nope, not at all. Volume is not fidelity but to a speaker that needs power to smooth out its sound, the lack of input power trashes the sound. You saw the part where 10w into the Klipsch produces the same sound pressure level as 100W into the JBLS. At 10W the 250W/ch Yamaha amp had plenty of headroom. To play at the same level, the JBM would be producing 1KW transients. The JBLs sounded like crap at low to mid volume (to me) and the Klipsch sounded great (to me) at anything but extreme volume levels. I've owned both the L112 and the Hersey. I had them in the same room at the same time. 4312/L100 speakers were nowhere as sweet as the L112s, that is why I got the L112s.

Play some pink noise for us through each speaker to demonstrate the claimed tonality differences. Use the same speaker and microphone positions and match midrange levels to make it interesting. Include disclaimers - the microphone is crap, RU-vid audio is heavily compressed, nothing reproduced sounds anything like the real thing, and so forth. It would be harmless fun and a reason for me to watch a video.

whereas i have heard Klipsch similar or the same as the ones reviewed and was quite surprised at that, i am interested in hearing the JBLs for reference. i am not in the market but i love to be able to recommend things to my friends that are good to great at decent prices. of late, i have been recommending the ELACs and have had very positive comments from those who bought them and there have been two who have done so. JBL was never on my list because of the L100s and 4310s with their boomy bass and tizzy highs. with the synthesis series, it's another story and they are quite pricy. they are now essentially flat from top to their healthy bottoms. i am encouraged that they came around with their affordable speakers but the new L100, with its much better overall sound, still hangs on to some of its fatness, and they ARE $4k! it is equally or more encouraging that the Klipsch have gotten to be more amenable to the audio enthusiast's liking by diverging from the colored midrange of their older horn based systems. and yes, i realize that dynamics are a factor that ranks up there with the flatter frequency response held in such favor by we audiophiles. the pro guys gravitate toward the dynamics and that includes Zu speakers. give me a pair of the Ocean Way floor standers which are both truly flat and also truly dynamic. the $30k cost is a limiting factor even though it includes amplification. things are better in audioland these days. thanks for the insights. ...hifitommy

It likely is due to the nostalgia. Was a victim of that myself lol. Not to say there isn’t some wonderful vintage gear out there, but technology is king here. I have some Polk Monitor 5s and Cerwin D2s and the 5000f pretty much trounces both of them. I thought they both sounded fine and they do sound really good, but the Klipsch is just way ahead to my ears. Not really an apples to apples comparison with the 3 I mentioned, but I think it fits your question. Lots of YT reviews on modern speakers and amps out there along with forums and ratings on websites like crutchfield or any other website that sells audio gear that can help guide you to the right speaker/component combo. Crutchfield also has great staff that will talk you through it, as does Music Direct and a few others. Just know what you like and they can usually point you in the right direction. Do your due diligence though! Hopefully you’ll be happy or hopefully you’ve already found your solution as your comment is a couple months old.
