Ahhh. Everything you said about the struggle or differences with the air usage in upper registers with the Buffet, I too notice all of those same differences! I never really knew there were other clarinet's that didn't have that problem, I thought it was just me and my own struggle! I too wish I could use the same or nearly the same air throughout the octaves. I kind of feel like I have to pinch off my air in the highest notes and shape the sound with my throat more and it's a struggle for me to make the highest notes speak correctly. I really don't know what model my clarinets are, just brand and material... and it's old. Ahah!

Good video. I play a tradition. I chose it out of 7 in the shop. My main criteria in choosing was the evenness. Had to sound like one instrument and tuning. Do you have a video on your experience with mouthpieces? Was there a story how you eventually got to the bd5 13? I play the b40 13 88

I enjoy your videos-thanks for another interesting one. An exercise that was suggested to me might help you with your wrist/forearm pain-I hope you don’t mind my sharing it here. Play the first five notes of a scale (or any passage) starting with your right elbow near your side and gradually move it out away from your body as you play the notes. Then reverse the exercise by starting with your elbow out away from your body and play the same five notes in the same order but slowly move your elbow in toward your body this time. Repeat both directions several times. If you practice this way, you can gain freedom, mobility and ease that I think helps to protect from injury. You can do it with both arms at the same time as well. A pianist/chamber music teacher taught me this. It may help you-it helped me.

My clarinet mechanic instructed me to invert the Buffet thumb rest, that raises it about 3/8" but you also have to cover it with a bit of soft hose and some cotton, together this helps (me) ergonomically. Also, if I find my thumb gets sore, I just put it above the rest and point the clarinet upward, above horizontal for a bit 🤪to re-calibrate, helps with docility too.

I don't understand why everyone tolerates the (IMHO) completely idiotic "thumb rest." I stopped playing for a year because of the pain in my thumb. Big News: your thumb will hurt if you try to use it to lift something perpendicular to your hand. I took mine off, fashioned a loop with a piece of metal strapping and my thumb (now vertical) can support the instrument all day without a thought. Additionally, it allows you to open your fingers faster as you have the end of the candy-cane like loop behind your thumb to push against. Someone in Europe is selling something related for over $200. It must be silver with platinum plating. I have nothing but anger for all of the years I tolerated this terrible design. Everyone would be better off if they remove their thumb rests and supported the clarinet with their knees. The clarinet thumb rest: the top candidate for worst design ever on a musical instrument.

I’ve always played the Buffet prestige, with a LC 3 (Larry Combs)mouthpiece. Didn’t you take lessons with him? Anyway, at university, our professor started pushing the Yamaha, and many of my peers bought the set Bb and A clarinets. I’m just loyal to the Buffet. May try a Vandoren mouthpiece soon, curious how that will sound.

Yes, Mr. Combs was my teacher in grad school, but I thought it was funny he didn't recommended his mouthpiece to me... I played on a Hawkins S model, the same model he used at that time

Hi, do you also use a Yamaha A-clarinet? If so, how is the articulation in the upper clarion. I use an R13 A-clarinet, and it is not very responsive in the upper clarion, so extra air pressure is required to avoid undertones. I have had the register tube replaced, and adjustments to the relevant tone holes. This has helped, but not solved the issue. I have thought about trying a Yamaha to see if it would be better in this regard. By the way, there is a new RU-vid video by Ron Odrich called "Robert Marcellus and his Clarinets." One of many interesting topics covered is a (Yamaha) tech friend of Odrich taking apart the pre-R13 A-clarinet Marcellus used in the celebrated recording of the Mozart Concerto. The tech explores the modifications that Hans Moenning did for Marcellus, including to address the undertones in the upper clarion. So I guess I am not the only one with this issue. Here is the link to the video about Robert Marcellus and his Clarinets: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N59CYFK9NN0.html. The author of the video, Ron Odrich, was a jazz clarinetist who studied with Marcellus, Bonade, David Weber, Lenny Tristano and others. He was also a friend of Buddy De Franco. However, his primary profession was as dentist/periodontist. That gives greater import to the comments he makes about how Marcellus adapted his embouchure to compensate for serious oral problems in the course of his career--resulting in noticeable changes in his tone. Later, I came across an interview with Dr. Odrich on the Joffe Woodwinds channel: www.joffewoodwinds.com/videos/dr-ron-odrich-renaissance-man/. Starting at 32:00 in this interview is a very interesting analysis of how one's oral geometry, together with placement of mouthpiece/reed within the oral cavity influences legato tone.

At this time I still have my RC Prestige A clarinet... I got my Bb Yamaha right as the pandemic started in 2020, so I put my search for an A clarinet on hold. I have heard the CSVR A clarinets are REEEAAAALLLLY good. Like, even better than their Bb's. I'm eager to get a new one to replace my RC A, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Also, that video sounds super interesting!!! Thanks!

I have a Yamaha CSVR-A. It plays , feels and responds even better than MOST Bb’s that I’ve played and performed on!! It’s not tubby like most Buffet A’s.

So when it comes to the thumb rest on your buffet, why not just get a new thumb rest? There are lots of different types of Thumb Rests you could have fitted to your clarinet. Have you heard of the Kooiman? They are quite popular

Hmm, I've been thinking about your suggestion, but I don't think it would help my issue, as I think I would still have to align the joints off center... Plus the problem doesn't exist with any other instrument or model (no issues with my RC A). Anyway, I appreciate your comment. How much is subjective. The Reed, room acoustic makes a difference. The great players of the past did not have all the gadgets of the present and often we are not even aware what instruments. How many ligatures have there been since the Rovner literature it seems to be endless and I believe a lot of it is to do with feel yes they will make some kind of difference but is it really that noticeable. There was a time when the section in an orchestra sounded better when the players played the same equipment. I can think of a Young professional player who got rid of a particular mouthpiece only to meet one of his idols from the past who rushed out to Rabbi the discordant mouthpiece because she is a little place that particular model. Thank you for your videos. I just think we are in danger of thinking there is some real difference which is not always apparent to the listener but has more to do with how we feel as players. I do not know how many more ligatures there will be try trying your Reed on with string God bless you Cally Bill. UK

You made the video I was waiting for. 😀. I've been curious to try out new clarinets and I've been warming once again to the idea of Yamaha CSVR's. I've been a loyal Buffet supporter for years. That being said, it's really only in the resonance of the instrument that Buffet will continually score over Yamaha, from my experience. It's as if the basic wooden tubes themselves have a richer, warmer sound. I've never owned a high end Yamaha but I might give it a go. I hear so many good players, including yourself, who manage to get a great sound out of them. The more economic price is another big plus. I have a Tosca, which I love, but the open G is flat and I don't know whether it's gradually got worse or if I've become more sensitive as a result of playing more with higher tunings of late (A: 442 as opposed to A: 440). A new Tosca is pretty much out of the question.

I bought the CSVR before the ASP model came out. Love that Yamaha a bit more than my Selmer and a LOT more than my Buffets from the past. (Unless you find an old buffet from the 70’s - 80’s ).

I might be wrong about the "softer keys". I haven't had an issue in over a year, and I think maybe the keys were shifting because the wood was still pretty new and was still being broken in.

Yes! So, I'm *not* the only one who has been experiencing these ridiculously frustrating things with my Yamaha! For a while, I thought I was going crazy! In my case, I played Buffet for 30 years. I now play on a Yamaha SEVR that is now just a year old. It's a love/hate relationship I have with this instrument. I LOVE the sweet, round sound but HATE the soft keys and rings that have not only bent under normal use but (like yours) have apparently been pressed out of alignment repeatedly due to the cute-but-crammed case's interior design. This has caused intonation issues in the low register, especially in the low B-natural and A. Why are the keys so darned soft on Yamaha's professional models?! They're like the keys on generic, cheap Chinese plastic clarinets, seriously! I don't get it... my top student also plays Yamaha and has a CSVR that is five years old but in beautiful condition; the keys on that one are *not* soft but as sturdy as the keys on any Buffet and plated noticeably thicker with silver (more thickly than my nearly new SEVR). Yamaha has evidently downgraded in key quality between when that early CSVR was manufactured and the current ones, and it's unforgivable. Maybe they're trying to cut corners and save money? In any case, I'll be switching to something else within the next couple of months. Meanwhile, I've intentionally lowered all of the rings on my SEVR to give it more robust resonance and less nonproductive resistance, and to counteract the issues I was having with the soft metal that seemed to go wonky every couple of days. I use a Kooiman Etude 3 ergonomic thumb rest, a Vandoren BD4 mouthpiece (standard model pitched at 442), and much softer reeds than I've ever used in the past (Vandoren Traditional #1.5). It stabilized in pretty much every way and is now a joy to play. Thanks for your informative and engaging videos. I'm encouraging all of my students to view them as well. @@callyclarinet I adjusted the rings on the tone holes so that they are now flush with the tops of the tone hole chimneys instead of rising slightly above them. I play with a flat touch, and now the flesh of my fingers also presses into the tone holes more than it did before, creating more resonance, faster response with less unproductive resistance, and better intonation overall. 🤓

I love this video! For me you sound amazing with both instruments but I like the Yamaha a bit more. Would you share some of your thoughts when you were about to change to Yamaha. Right now I got a pair of Selmer Recitals, I love the Bb but the A not so much. Been thinking about some Yamahas including the model you use, also some newer Selmer, Buffet E-13 (not a fan of the R-13 but E version is getting my attention) and Tradition, and Uebels as well. Back in like 2015 Yamaha reached out to me and asked me to try out the CSVR when they were at Midwest... I fell in love with the sound and feel immediately, and decided that if they ever came out with a higher end model I would buy it. I like that the high end models have metal tenon rings and the left hand Eb/Ab key... little did I know just how much more amazing the key work on the ASP would feel! I also hear John Bruch Yeh playing on Yamahas in the CSO (also BD5) and he sounds amazing!

you should try the buffet r13 and multiple models. Most professionals use it and recommend it. It has good tone and intonation and is very good for orchestra and projection.

Those who play Buffet really like Buffet. those who play Yamaha really like Yamaha. It is personal choice. I personally have never like Yamaha clarinets, but NOT because of the sound, intonation, etc. For me, Buffet clarinets are simply better built. But, that is my personal opinion, as I have now changed from Buffet to Uebel due to the availability of a plateau instrument that I now need due to hand issues...
