Epic Z overview. Great resource, Matt! I started with the Z6, specifically for video ... bought a second rather than the Z50 because I wanted to stay 35mil. Bided my time for the Z9, when I traded my last DSLR. You know the rest -- Z8, which is a dream come true. Z lenses, of course, are fantastic -- wish I could afford them all! I'm now using the Z9 and Z8 for A & B cameras. Z6s mostly for B-roll. Never been a better time to be a photographer/videographer!

I’ve been very happy with my Z5, it’s a great FF camera for hobbyists. Dual SD cards are appreciated, and ibis is great. I do miss the LED screen that my D7100 has, though, and although I’m not a spray and pray type of shooter, the 4fps might be a turn off for some. Also the 4K crop is lame, but on the rare times I shoot video, I’m in 1080 anyway.
@johnnyutah7299
@johnnyutah7299 Год назад
I agree. And plenty of pros use it too. I cringe at the thought of a $200 CFX card, thank you SD. The 1080 is just beautiful, yet underrated.
@TheTuffOnes
@TheTuffOnes 10 месяцев назад
Totally agree on 1080. I just learned how 4K actually works on these (and other) cameras. It actually skips a line for every line. I know full well that I am not explaining that properly. I thought it my imagination that people's 4K looked worse than 1080 but I was RIGHT! Additionally, 4K doesn't view well anyway on most viewing devices. There are RU-vid videos here shot in 4K and they are barely viewable on a non 4K device. The novelty of the extremely expensive camera wears off when the bill arrives. Not so with the addition of a new lens for a reasonably priced Z mount.

As a bird photographer using a Z6ii I'm really tempted to get the Z8. But I've decided that it is better to just wait for the Z6iii or Z90/Z500 and spend the extra money that would go to the Z8 on a new lens like the upcoming 180/200-600. Side note : I still love my Z6ii !😉

I started out in the Z system with a Z5 about 2 years ago. I loved it. I am not a pro photographer, more like a semi-serious retired guy whose primary hobby is photography. When Nikon dropped the price of the original Z7 last year, I jumped on it and have been very pleased. I really didn't see enough difference between what the Z6 offered over the Z5 to spend the money, but the 46 MP od the Z7 was worth it. I shoot a lot of bird photos and often have to do some serious cropping. I'm giving some serious thought to the Z8 - not because I really need it, but just because I want it. Very good roundup, Matt.

Brilliant video Matt. Such a comprehensive overview of the Nikon mirrorless Z range. I have a Zfc and absolutely love it but am now considering an upgrade to full frame - either a Z7ii or Z8. After much consideration I'm probably going to go for the Z7ii because of the price difference and because I don't need or use high spec video or need superfast frame rates. My only hesitation is the superior auto focus on the Z8 but buying the Z7ii means I can spend some money on quality glass like the 24-120 f4 S
@ThatNorma
@ThatNorma Год назад
well the z7ii is mainly a stills /landscape camera and honestly Af performance was never an issue for me. I mostly focus manually but whenever I use AF it works perfectly for the use cases mentioned above. Be it landscapes , stills or portraits, the z7ii AF is more than enough for those use cases which are the main goal of this camera. The 24-120 f4 S is superb

Just a month ago I bought the Z7II. As a hobbyist I shoot everything (but I never really shot birds). Just to try my new gear and learn the AF system (it really is a learning curve you have to go through) I was taking pictures of flying seagulls and got some nice shots. It was not the inability of the Z7II but my own lack of training in bird photography that I had only a few keepers. The Z8 will just make it easier and learning will be faster, but picture quality wise, the Z7II is really good. Note also, the Z8 is two bars of chocolate heavier than the Z7II if you travel a lot and is bigger (I have small hands and the Z7II fits really well). I was also considering the Z8 but went for Z7II + more glass with the money I wanted to spend and I'm happy with it.

I've got the Z7ii and can't wait till I get the cash together to upgrade to the z8. I just can't count the number of AF misses I've had when shooting friends and family in more candid moments... or even some stationary posed moments in fairly normal (but admittedly not bright) indoor light. And I'm not talking "oh the camera got the eyelashes, not the iris", I mean full-on totally blurry subject and the only option is to trash the photo. When shooting my 1 year old son, sometimes it'll just go back and forth, hunting for focus for 4-5 seconds before finally finding him. Too Late! Whatever cute thing he was doing is over, and now I've got a shot I can just send straight to the bin. It's just a joke how bad it is... I get way more hits with my iPhone. I've always liked Nikon from my DSLR shooting days, but I'm constantly second guessing my choice to not switch to Canon or Sony when I moved to mirrorless.
@ThatNorma
@ThatNorma Год назад
@@oldiesmore9485 good choice and reasoning. As a landscape photographer that hikes and travels quite a lot, the z8 doesnt make much sense to me either. AF performance was never a priority for me either

I bought the Z6 in 2019. I added a Z50 in 2020 to give added telephoto reach with adapted lenses and for street and casual photography. I frequently pair it with the compact 28 and 40mm lenses. I love both cameras and especially how they have stayed true to Nikon ergonomics while providing a great mirrorless experience. I recently added a Z7 to the mix to get the same image quality I get with my D850. While the Z7ii provides some great features the original Z7 provides the same quality and largely same experience. Fantastic deals are available on the Z7. I got mine from Nikon for about $1,000 less than the best sale price of the Z7ii and 1/2 the list price. This camera comes in so close to the newer model and provides me everything I need for my use case. Its an amazing value now. The same can be said for the original Z6

Great comparison video Matt! I have the Z50 and have it updated to the latest firmware. It's an amazing camera for the price, and now with the support of third party lenses, it's so much more enjoyable. The only gripe I have is that the battery life is still a disappointment compared to my old D3100. 500 shots vs 1200 shots. Unlike a lot of people, I really prefer the flip screen of the Z50 over the Z30. It suits me better for those times I don't use the EVF. As for going full frame, I'm not there yet. I have started doing some portrait work, so I have started looking into the Z5 or Z6ii. Budget says Z5, but the Z6ii just seems to be the better buy.
@TheTuffOnes
@TheTuffOnes 10 месяцев назад
Hi! I think you can put a dummy battery into the Z50. I have to ask you, WHY do you like that screen? I am very sincere with my inquiry. I thought the fully articulating screen on my Z30 was marketing BS until I decided one night to set up my tripod and do moon and star shots. The flippy screen made pretty easy work of that as I didn't have to get down on my knees or lay on the ground and look through a viewfinder, etc. There is a little trick to making the screen show settings available when extended on the Z30. That flippy screen is magical when it comes to taking photos/video of obscure places that would otherwise be most uncomfortable to focus on.
@stevemockoviak8384
@stevemockoviak8384 10 месяцев назад
@@TheTuffOnes As for the screen type, I have a Canon PowerShot G12 with the fully articulating screen like the Z30. Almost broke it several times while it was out to the side. While I agree that there are shots that are easier with the articulating screen, I just prefer a screen that is always in the same plane of view as the viewfinder. I have been able to get all the shots I need for my type of photography. I have used it for moon shots as well without having to bend down to view in the viewfinder. Just a matter of personal preference.

I use two Z5 and a Z50 and a Z30... with Viltrox lenses on the APSc... I do mostly portrait/model work and the Z5 is great for that. I do like the smaller size of the Z50. I have issues with the Z30, not so much with the camera but the software I use for editing doesn't have a camera profile for the Z30 so it doesn't read the raw images. I am actually considering sell the Z30 for another Z50. Recently purchased the Z 24-120 and I feel that lens will certainly be a game changer for me. Thanks for this great review! It helps!

I got a Z6ii in Jan '22 and a Z 8 last week. Z8 is awesome AF. As a stills only shooter it is hard to image needing more from a body. Last evening I shot a hunting dogs training session. The dogs worked in tall grass, pointed birds, retrieved decoy birds on land and water along with trailing with retrieves in tall grass. I took 914 shots and it missed focus on one bird in flight sequence and that was my fault I could not get the AF point on the target. What surprised me was it saw through tall grass and stayed locked on focus with the dogs. Two years ago I was shooting with a D7200 and a 300mm F 2.8 plus 1.4X and 2X converters. Had I had that last night I would have been lucky to get a couple images sharp. A big plus is with the 100---400 S line lens the whole kit was much lighter to carry following fast moving dogs. I am on the verge of being giddy.

I've stuck with the Nikon point & shoot cameras for the past decade, Coolpix P510 and upgraded to the Coolpix P950 in 2020 that I still use for space, birds & concerts etc as I lack the photo creds. Then as I got the extra stimuli I went for the Z5 24-50mm kit, added the 28mm z lens & MC 50mm lens and last year I decided to get the Z6II on the bread payments since I needed it for school theater stuff. What I love is that the batteries & lenses etc are pretty interchangeable, but due to my budget I'm sticking with what I have. I never even had an SLR style camera and I still learned pretty quickly. Also I stick with the SD cards as they're more budget friendly so I can use my cards in any of my gear as well, another thing I like! I also have a mini photo printer so if I ever need to make a quick print copy I can do that! It prints up to 5x7 but I basically stick with the 4x6 inch size.

Thank you for this as I've spoke to a lot of people looking at upgrading within Nikon or coming over to the Z system and while I know the basic differences, I can now point them to this video. I have the Z 7ii and ordered the Z8 day one and came right away. My hand is a tad larger for the 7ii and I wanted the slightly larger body and the new AF, screen, etc. After spending a day with it I returned it as it was more than I needed, and while it felt better in my hand, the weight was demonstrably different and offset the benefits. Plus, I'm not a pro and the 8 had a learning curve I just wasn't up to taking on as the 7ii is second nature to me now. If they come out with a 7iii one day with better processor, AF, screen and probably more MP, then I'll be first in line to try that one.

Long time Nikon Z6 user here and just recently got my Z8 in the mail. Coming from DSLR, I honestly couldn't complain with the initial upgrade from the Nikon D750 to Z6. The Z6 satisfied my needs for both photo and video. While by no means a perfect camera it was definitely a step in the right direction. When the Z9 was announced, I was overjoyed that Nikon packed so much into the flagship but due to the price (which was affordable if we are talking top end flagship) was out of my range. After saving up and waiting and hoping the features would trickle down into their next camera or a Z6iii, I knew when the Z8 was released that this was the one!

If you are preparing to upgrade, then I would suggest waiting until next year for the Z6III and the Z7III. They will perform significantly better than the Z6II and the Z7II, particularly the processing speed and the autofocus system. When you have time, compare the Z6II and Z7II to the newly released ZF. It's a retro style camera, but has great hardware that makes this camera compete with Sony and Canon. I know this now, because I now own the ZF. Performance is outstanding and it's a preview of what's to come for the Z6III and Z7III.

Hi. I am considering Z50 from D7100 as well. 2 main area of my concern: 1. Will Z50 provide better picture quality? 2. Does Z50 have better image tracking? I mainly shoot amateur sports e.g. field hockey and rugby. So far I have survived with D7100 despite the crappy buffer limit. Thank you in advance
@MattisProbably
@MattisProbably Год назад
@@rauflahab Heh, I recently fired up the D7100 again and the buffer really is crappy, isn't it? 6 shots and it was full, took forever to recover as well... To answer your questions, I was extremely happy with the Z50 as an upgrade from the D7100. From my experience the image quality was way better, many media outlets praised the dynamic range in particular for an APS-C sensor and I agree, recovering details from shadows works great. ISO performance is also better, I'd say files are usable up to ISO 12.800 and they work very well with noise reduction software like DxO PureRAW 3. Images do get noisy starting at around ISO 800 though but it's not unpleasant noise. It's all perfectly reasonable. Tracking is... Ok. That's something *all* Nikon cameras from the Z line struggle with except for the Z8 and Z9 because those are the only ones with actual 3D tracking. The AF is alright in general. Better than the D7100 if you use the right feature in the right situation. I used it mainly to shoot animals at the zoo where I volunteer. If you can use eye tracking AF you should use it as much as possible. That works really well. I mainly used the auto area AF mode and put subject tracking on the FN1 button. That way the tracking box appears when you need it, you can put it on your subject and it will stay on it as you hold the shutter button half pressed. That worked pretty well for tracking. And I say I *was* happy with the Z50 because I recently upgraded to a Z7II. The Z50 is still really great. But I'd also recommend you get the SmallRig vlogging plate, specifically version 2. The Z50 is a pretty small camera and the vlogging plate adds that tiny bit more space to the grip so all your fingers actually fit onto it! The grip itself is deeper than the one of the D7100 though. So with the vlogging plate it was actually more comfortable to hold than the D7100! Just be sure to get version2 of the vlogging plate because that one allows you to remove the battery door from the camera and put it on the plate. Version 1 didn't have that so you would have to remove it from the camera every time you wanted to swap batteries or take out the SD card. And since you want to shoot sports, the Z50 is great for video as well if you want to start with that. Tracking works well, image quality is great.

Excellent breakdown of the lineup, Matt. I personally find the ergonomics of the Z30, Z50, Z8, and Z9 to be best in class. The Z5, Z6/6II, Z7/7II don't fit that well in my hand and cause some strain. Moreover, features wise, everything other than the Z8 and Z9 is showing its age compared to what's out there in the market; however, in terms of value for money, they are bargain for what you get, especially the original Z6 which I have seen going for $1000 in mint condition with only a few thousand clicks on the shutter, box, and all printed materials with the 24-70 F4. The value is insane and nothing comes close! As for the AF, the cameras below the Z8 and Z9 can satisfy up to 90% of shooting scenarios. This number is not random or made up, I have actually listed 50 different use cases that I used my Z7II for and only 5 of these cases had the focus struggling to a point that made me miss many shots. So, it's literally good for 90% of all use cases from my experience. I am only saving up for a Z9 because of the ergonomics issue I shared earlier and overlooking the Z8 as there isn't enough price difference between the two bodies (when the Z9 in on discount) in my region.

Great line up comparison Matt. I'm only an armature but once I made the jump to mirrorless, with a Z5, there has been no looking back. Recently bought a Z6ii, not a big upgrade but too good a deal to ignore, plus I'm keen on astrophotography, so the better low light sensor was attractive. Your video has just made my hunger for a Z8 grow even more. Although I'm also hanging out for a Z50ii, for backpacking type travel. Love you work 🙂

Unfortunately as a Nikon fan and wildlife bird shooter I have sold my d500 and 500mm pf None of these cameras only the z9 and Z8 didn’t make sense for me to buy because the lagging autofocus Do I have the money to buy the Z9? Yes I do but as amateur and hobbyist there is no way I’m spending this money So where I’m standing now? I have R8 which took my swallows and swifts in flight photography to another level As a guy who was shooting with d500 for 5 years I need to say that there is big hype about Nikon cameras but there is big question mark where is the product for people who don’t want to spend 5k or 4k and still want the great autofocus

My first foray into photography outside the mobile phone camera world, was to buy the Z6II. A lot of advice I saw online was to buy the entry level camera and spend more on lenses. My brother, a rabid amateur photographer (Canon DSLR) advised me to buy the best camera I could afford. His reasoning was that if I buy an entry level camera, but found myself really getting into photography, then I'd hit the limits pretty quickly, but if I bought a GOOD mid level camera, it would last me for a LONG time, and then buy lenses to match the needs, rather than worrying about buying a new body. After all that, I love the Z6II, the low light capability is phenomenal. I was taking low ISO shots with the 40mm F2.0 in Hosier Lane in Melbourne at night. Great results. Now it's just lenses and a whole lot of $$$. Maybe I don't need all my organs after all...

Best Comment Here! Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc all want you to buy (no pun intended) into this hype that you "need" the newest camera.... That is utter BS. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using a late model DSLR. In fact, 99% of the people I know somehow manage to survive without a MILC or DSLR in their lives... Can you believe that? Yes, they are all using these strange little devices known as "cell phones"! In all sincerity though, your comment is spot on. If you (or anyone) are a good photographer the camera does not define what you are able to create.

The Z5 is an absolute steal right now for $997. I mostly shoot Canon and was looking at the RP and R8, but saw the Z5 for that price and grabbed one. Better sensor than the RP (up there with the R8) better quality EVF, IBIS, an actual 1/8000s mechanical shutter, dual card slots, a larger battery and its weather sealed. Pretty much everything the R8 isn't but should be. Looking forward to trying it out.

Thank you for that spot-on summary! The APS-C bodies are not to be scorned. On a Safari in Sri Lanka, I paired a Zfc with a Sigma 150-600 Sport (the Beast) via an FTZ adapter, so I could get that extra reach. The AF was pretty responsive, though not “instant”, and the Lens-based IS did a phenomenal job. The image quality was impressive. These bodies are capable of great things, provided you couple them with lenses that deliver.

Good Job summarising Matt. However, given Nikon's strategy to focus on higher end pros/enthusiasts - cheaper/lower performing Z3, Z2, Z1 are highly unlikely. As a Hasselblad X2D-100C shooter I do not see the case for a ZM -- It would need to accomodate a 44mm x33mm sensor to accomodate a similar sensor - as large as the Z-mount is it is still smaller than the X-mount and the GF-mount in fuji. The X2D and GFX-100s have much larger bodies than the Z8 - one reason is to accommodate an even higher performing IBIS.

The APS-C Z mount line up is a lot more attractive now with the Sigma primes and the latest Nikon DX 24mm f/1.7. I'm hoping for some compact f/2.8 DX lenses to round out the options for mirrorless crop sensor. I've enjoyed my Z6 the past 4 years but I find myself going back to my older APS-C camera from a rival manufacturer because of its compactness and lighter weight.

As Nikon Z50 user with both kit lenses, I agree with you Matt, the Z50 is a great travel camera. The biggest problem with Z50 are the battery life is awful and the AF is sub par compared to Nikon competitor (Canon and Sony). As hobbyist photography I can’t justify the price of the Z9 and Z8 and even the Z7II. I prefer to stick with APSC cameras due to the lower cost of the camera. With that said, I love for Nikon to introduce a D500 mirrorless replacement with IBIS, the E15 battery, dual cards, similar AF to the Z9/Z8. Honestly the Canon R7 is a prefect APSC camera for me, but I don’t really want to change brand at this time.

Nice overview Matt. What's interesting is that the height of each camera ramps up as you move from the Z30 to the Z9. But, someone pointed out in a review that the Z8 with the grip installed is actually bigger than the Z9. For me, I got a Z6ii on a Nikon refurb sale a few months ago, and saved $300, and I love that little gem. I formerly shot with the D7200 and was always thinking for upgrading to a D500, but now awaiting the rumored Z90/Z500 with a rumored 180/200-600 lens. I would love the Z8 but it's a bit beyond my budget, and rather save my bits for the upcoming APSC star and another lens.

You can attach DX lenses to an FX camera, but then you won't use the full size of the sensor anymore. That's why I bought new glass when I upgraded from my 10 year old DX DSLR to FX. Side note: the new Z lenses are exceptional good, in my opinion much better than my old DX lenses. But they have a price tag.

I would like your opinion - I am struggling with whether or not to keep the Z7ii. Its smaller, and is a great travel camera but I'm now sold on the Z8 autofocus.... Do you think now that the Z8 is released, they may finally do fw 2.0 on Z7ii / Z6ii. I know it won't get to where the Z8/9 are, but hey if they can make it at least a bit competitive it may be worth keeping.

Great review Matt. Nikon has all bases covered. It all depends on your wallet as to which body one would need? I think needs to look into their flashlight. They need to upgraded, see if any upgrade on flash sync speed is doable? Also, Nikon needs to look into coming up with a better EN-CL 15 battery, see if their R&D could improve on their C battery. I hope Nikon could consider to create a Z Fisheye lens? say a 8mm-10mm. The Z lenses are almost complete across all focal range

Hi Matt thx for the video. Now personally I've always had the Nikon flagships with my last one the the D4 but I've lost it together with my safari business and everything I owned due to the Pandemic :( So now I'm doing a lot of camera research to hopefully return to Africa at some point. Video has become my priority but would still like to shoot some wildlife for fine art prints. Now lately Nikon has come with great Z lenses but I see the old F mounts work great with that lens mount. So based on my history I'd love the Z9 although I'm not looking to film much in 8k as it takes to much hard drive space and longer editing as my wildlife videos are just for RU-vid, but I think its time for a Z6iii and Z7iii as the z6ii and 7iii are now 3 years old and as they came out 2 years after the 6 &7 so it just make sense that its time for a update and then I think a comparison video between them and the z8 would make more sense. How the Z7iii and z8 will be different I don't know but the mouth iii should be better than the current ii and the 30 min video recording should be a thing of the past and both cameras should have the shutter curtain. I see the Z9 to get more and better firmware updates to compete with Sony's aim to make the fastest camera ever for the 2024 olympics. So yeh I'd like a z9 but as I also need a great lense and a 4x4 and and and but I'm not there yet so have time to see what other models will come and if there will be a z6iii. Not sure if I have a question unless if you know when the 6iii will come or if there will be a 33mp in-between the 6 & 7 to be continued 🦁

Having recently moved into the Z system, I have not totally converted because I love my D850 and D700 and a load of SLR'S including a F6 that i got a few weeks ago, but actually looked at the Zfc, just because of how it looks, but ended up going for a Z6ii. But I would really love to see a Z6ii spec's retro chrome camera, essential a mirrorless replacement to the Df or full frame Zfc. Size wise, the Z8 looks perfect, but it's too high in spec's for me. I don't do a lot of video, and the Z6 ii with a smallrig L bracket bulks it up enough for me. Great points on the Z range. I think the Z7 will be dropped, and we'll see a Z6iii next year.

I can't count the number of times my Z7ii has just completely missed the shot when shooting my family and friends. Everyday I use my camera I question why I stuck with Nikon when upgrading from DSLR to Mirrorless, when Sony and Canon users don't seem to have these problems at all. Nikon needs to bring their Z8/Z9 AF down to the cheaper cameras in their line. If that means refreshing them all with Expeed 7, then so be it. They just need to hurry up about it. It's frustrating thinking about wanting something small and light, like a Z50, for travel, and then realizing it's just going to be the same crap AF experience I've got with my Z7ii currently.

Being an owner of the Z5 for a couple of years, I would say that the IBIS is superb for the price bracket. Not terribly impressed by the artificially crippled frame rate though, 4.5 is a bad joke. I'm eagerly awaiting either the MkII of the model, or more likely the Z6 MkIII as a proper step up.

Z fc is the best entry for this Z system I think. The flippy screen is good for creative photography which other model don't have it. Just not too much Z DX lens you can choose before but now you have 3 Sigma primes with Z DX 24mm f/1.7, Z fc could be a good daily camera now with this new Z DX 24mm f/1.7 prime. If you target an entry level of full frame, Z5 is the best entry, absolutely no doubt. Well just missed on very important feature in Z system, is the Picture Control settings, you can find lots of film simulation on line and the direct output jpg is very similar to Fujifilm does.
