We are on the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Last Sunday the Gospel presented Jesus sending his apostles to preach, drive out demons, anoint and cure the sick.
In today’s Gospel, the apostles have returned and reported to Jesus what they had done and taught. But even when the day was already waning, the crowds continued to pursue them up to the deserted place where Jesus had wanted his apostles to “rest a while.”
But look at the heart of Jesus: upon seeing the crowd, he was moved with pity-“for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.” Oh the heart of Jesus! He was sensitive to his apostles´ need for rest. He also had compassion for the crowd in need of the guidance of a shepherd.
