My goal coming into the 2022 KBF National Championship was to make the cut to finish in the TOP 100 which earns a unique custom engraved Ketch measuring board.
I've always wanted to fish this lake and qualifying for this competition gave me the perfect reason.
A record cold front dropped the water temperature 13 F degrees over 3 days of competition and the fishing was extremely tough. My game plan going in was to rely on my map and satellite image study to find schools of offshore bass chasing baitfish that were sure to be pushing off the main lake and secondary channel ledges onto the more shallow bars.
I found good fish during pre-fishing practice and had high hopes this pattern would hold up for the coming tournament days.
Unfortunately, as the hours accumulated after the cold front more and more shad were pushing out of the shallow areas I had predicted would hold fish.
The first day started off with a good bite on an offshore drop-off where I had caught some good bass in practice the afternoon before. I lost 7 fish in a row on top water trying to secure my final fish for the limit which would have put me in the top 10 after day 1.
The second day most of the bass had moved out of my area with the shad schools and I only managed 1 bass. As luck would have it, most of the field of anglers also had a tough day 2 and I still had enough length to make the cut of the top 100 and secured my trophy measuring board.
Kentucky lake has a very diverse array of hard bottom structure and I would love to return to try my luck again at a time of year with more favorable fishing conditions.
Thanks to all the great KBF sponsors that support our sport and to KBF for running a premier tour and offering such great opportunity for new anglers to get involved.
This is the last kayak fishing video of 2022. Stay tuned for an action packed season in 2023.
