Have you ever noticed those impressionistic piano chords that Bill Evans used when comping behind Miles on “So What” or McCoy Tyner for John Coltrane? They are voicings in 4ths and add a fresh modern sound when combined with those drop voicings we guitarists resort to almost exclusively when comping. Well, if you’re not already using them, here’s an opportunity to learn them!
In this lesson I show you how to derive voicings in 4ths from any scale and extract 2 quartal triads that you can use to comp over various II-V-Is ! This has become the norm among the great 21st century jazz guitarists…so check it out...

As soon as you ran that first Dorian chord scale I was like oh yeah that’s Jim Hall right there 😎

Great lesson, Richie! I've had my ax tuned quartally for the last several years and this harmony works so well with it. The inversions are a little bit of a stretch but I've made it work. As I've seen elsewhere in vids on this harmony, May the "fourths be with You". Seconds also.

I've always been drawn to this sound but have lacked a lot of the knowledge to draw it out of the aether. Thanks for this helpful lesson. You're the best

Do you have any listening suggestion where Jim Hall employs this sound? Hoping to get it in my ears and fingers! Thanks

He doesn't use them exclusively but you can hear it different places when he comps. Also check out John Abercrombie whenever he comps...Your best bet is to listen to piano players like McCoy Tyner...there you'll hear it all over the place!

Hi Richie, I was wondering if you could do a lesson on Allan Holdsworth and how he thinks of chords. It seems related to this but what the hell do I know - Thanks!
@RichieZellon
@RichieZellon 3 года назад
I believe Holdsworth's approach to constructing lines was unique and there is much to teach and learn from them. However when it came to his use of chords, I believe I've covered everything he did here and in other chord related lessons. It wasn't so much the voicings he used, but instead the context that he used them in...his polymodal compositions.

They’re not technically “triad pairs” if they share a common note. But not a big deal
@RichieZellon
@RichieZellon 3 года назад
That definition only applies in the context of tertial harmony.

@@lindsayblack766 that big a deal to you huh? Triad pairs are usually referenced in context to hexatonic scales (6 unique notes). I’m sure RZ understands it’s an easy error to make - he’s clearly a super nice guy

@@ili626 yes, just saying, I would want to be 100% sure of the facts before commenting on anyone’s video, but that’s just me.
