Software for voice over can be really intimidating starting out….
...but it doesn’t have to be. In this video I cover what you absolutely need to know for software for VO, the basics of Adobe Audition for VO, and why I use it. There are lots of different kinds of software out there that can be used for VO so take some time to find out what works best for your workflow. Leave a comment letting me know which software you use and if you have any questions. I’ll be uploading Part 2 of this series for later this week.

A tip when making mistakes instead of clapping - if you have access to the keyboard while reading, just press the 'm' key on your keyboard and it will create a marker. Then you can go to the marker tab later and have easy access to all the marker / mistakes you made in a list with timestamps and easy access.

Excellent introductory video, Bill. The reason for 48k over 44.1k for sample rate isn't about quality, it's purely about compatibility with video - 48k works arithmetically with various frame rates (24, 25, 29.97 etc), whereas the "CD standard" of 44.1k doesnt. If your audio is accompanying video, then it has to be 48k as the standard choice.

I'll be buying a bit of a starter set up soon this year and have been listening to all your videos as I walk around on patrol. You cover a lot of really great info that not a lot of other video makers have covered or haven't covered in a great way - eg: regurgitating nearly 5th grew same exact info in slightly different ways. Your advice on making the different types of recordings and how to go about making them is priceless.

Your comment about being a master at reel to reel brought back a load of memories from my days in TV. Our format was Betamax and after a decade of cutting highlights for mine and others sportscasts, I was a master of the Beta. I could cut a 2:00 feature in 8-10 minutes. I left television when they were experimenting with digital. I saw that, as you saw audition as daunting and frightening.

I'm new to the voice over game and I definitely have Bill to thank for the knowledge. The one thing I wish I knew was when to use the default screen, the audio to video screen, or the radio production screen; or does it make a difference for voice over. I don't do music; at least not yet.

Super long comment coming up. I've spent about the last 4 hours watching all your videos taking notes.. I've been getting so turned off watching all these youtubers because they have morning routines, their videos are so HD and background music and it's just so in your face like. Like i'm already down in the dumps why do you have to rub it in my face that you have all these things and taking so super long just to teach me 2 basic things i could've read off the webbsite. YOU SIR!! Keep it so simple. Even after being so successful and pro. You are so relatable and motivating. You get right to the information and you really make me feel like i can do it. STICK TO THE ESSENTIALS. Golden advice. If you read this far. You're dope too. Thanks.

I’m thinking of switching to Adobe Audition after struggling with Logic Pro. (Logic is way more complicated than I need, and I can’t figure out how to export (dual) mono! And recently it’s become glitchy and weird. I don’t need that kind of stress! 😂) After much research, Adobe Audition seems like the way to go to simply accomplish what I need. Thank you for these tutorials! ☺️

Crazy, because when I got my degree in Communications in 99, we were required to turn in our radio assignments on DAT, Reel and via a file saved into ProTools. I started using Cool Edit Pro shortly after and used it until 2010 when I upgraded to Adobe Audition.

Great video. Wish I had this a few months ago! On another note, I’ve seen this “clicker” method a lot from a number of people. Is there a reason people do this instead of just hitting “M” to drop a marker? Is there some drawback to just dropping a marker that I’m missing?

💯 AU is so radio and VO friendly 👍 Used it since the Cool Edit days. Have you found a way to save a file in AU while you’re listening to the file? I can’t figure it out in the latest AU. Not a huge thing … I’m a bit OCD I guess.

I totally feel you about REEL 2 REEL editing with the razor blade!!! Thanks for hitting me where I live. Would you please do a video or advise on how to format a voice wave to conform to ACX saudio book narrations? Specifically, how to do these two things: "Each file must measure between -23dB and -18dB RMS. Put simply, all files must fall within a specific volume range. By keeping all files within this range - not too loud and not too soft - listeners won't have to constantly adjust the volume of their playback device. *****Each file must have peak values no higher than -3dB. By leaving this headroom you'll reduce the possibility of distortion, which can reduce the quality of the listening experience. This headroom is also needed to ensure files are successfully encoded." "H-E-L-P!"

Hey again Bill, quick question about cleaning up clicks & mouth noises. At the 23 min mark, you explain how to go into Effects, then scroll down to Noise Reduction / Restoration, then choose Click / Pop Eliminator. Does this editing feature come w/ Adobe Audition or do I need to install Izotope RX 9 to clean my audio files w/? Thanks!

Good video - however, nobody should be using 16-bit to capture a recording in 2021(+). If I understand correctly from the Adobe Masterclasses with Jason Levine, it has more to do with having access to additional data during the editing process (without introducing artifacts). At the very least, it should be 24-bit.
