Congratulations 👏🏻 you are the first person to say anything about the start of the video. I spent a good amount of time putting that sequence together and finding the sound effect for it. I wanted to start the video out a bit different. But I felt like no one even really noticed it. So well done 👍🏻 An entire video in reverse... I'm not sure how many people would appreciate that 🙄

@RobsBushcraftandAdventures Год назад
I could have cut the sighs out from the edit but chose to leave them in for that very reason, to show the reality of how hard the work was. There were a LOT more sighs than that however that I did cut out because it would have been to much in the video hahaha. When I am working in nature building something like this I am more healthy than when I am just working at a job and at home. It makes me healthier in both body and mind and spirit.

Some bad luck on the chimney break but great build. The tiny houses and koala were beautiful like rain drops. Thanks for the video, heavy going in all that heat
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures Год назад
Thanks mate. Yeah I had to quickly come up with a plan B with the chimney top piece and made a top from stone instead. the other tube that the end snapped off of was actually planning to be a chimney for the mild for future firings. Yeah very heavy going with the heat. I was even getting out there and starting work on it at 3am a number of time using a filming light to see what I was doing. 1/2hr after starting work my clothes were completely soaked with sweat.

@@RobsBushcraftandAdventures Well the fact that you stuck at it and weren't to fussed about the chimney breaking is good practice for keeping your head in what your doing. I like the hidden metal door hinges that we did not get to see you install, but overall nice build.
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures Год назад
I didn't try to hide the hinges. I used tarp and a heap of cordage on the shelter so using a couple of barrel hinges didn't bother me. I didn't show it in the build simply because it was too hard to try and film it. I was either in the way of the camera or it (the camera) had to point towards the door and the picture got blown out by the brightness outside. On a previous shelter build I made wood pins attached to the door and had these go into pieces of bamboo in the ground and attached above the door. It worked well but I had other plans for the earth shelter door that had to get changed because it wasn't working out how I planned. Originally the door was going to have sticks woven into it and then get rendered with clay and straw (like the front walls) however after almost 6hrs spent collecting the materials, removing all the branches and leaves and weaving these into 1/3 of the door I found that it had the effect of twisting things too much and the door latches I spent so much time making no longer moved. So yeah removed most of the sticks and covered the door with a tarp. I may look at stuffing the door full of dry grass at some point.

Yeah it was like a 5 1/2 month build so every time I worked on another project it meant work stopped on this one. So in the end I just said I'm putting all my focus on this one until it's done. Yeah I already had the thought about using the breakages for grog however it did require me to come up with a couple of plan B's when pieces of pottery broke that I planned to use on the earth shelter. Hope you had a good time up this way.

This is HARDCORE bushcraft comparing to 90% of the soft wood soft sand that's flooding RU-vid! And as a pointer, no wonder those kidnapped in aus never return, it's those knots lol ( referring to the films, wrong turn etc) When you broke the pottery the whole world stopped a beat lol! That huff reminds me of my dad lol yeah I'm pissed but ...🤣 Great video and alot of hard work! Sub and like DONE!
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures Год назад
Thanks for the comment Darren. Yeah I see (well see the thumbnails at least of) the videos you refer to. I haven't seen that movie. Yeah I had plans for that pottery. the pipe that broke was to be to use on the kiln for future firings so I could get the temperature up more easily and the cap the broke in three was to be for on top of the earth shelter chimney. I had to come up with a plan B of using rocks in stead. That's one thing I really like about bushcraft and doing the things I do is that it really fits my personality of being creative and good at adapting and finding solutions to problems. Yes I plan things out before doing them, but I don't get too bogged down with it because I know things will go wrong and not work and I also know that I'll always be able to modify, adapt and change to always find a way. Thanks again for your comment and for subscribing. I hope you like some of (or all of) the videos I've already done and the ones I'll do in the future. 🤙🏻

I think that charcoaling the ends of those posts will only increase the appetite of the termites, and have no affect on wood rot.
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures Год назад
If you do a simple Google search on your two points you'll find you are mistaken with both of them. Charring the wood will not stop termites if they are hungry enough and have no other wood to eat, but it has been proven to deter them and other insects. Charring wood also hardens in and has been proven to reduce the likelihood of rotting.

Thanks for your comment Jeff. I actually started out with the thought of trying to make one of the best long term shelters and build videos done on RU-vid. I feel there are definitely better shelters out there. Some of the builds Mike from TA Outdoors has done are truly amazing. But by setting lofty goals I felt the results will still be pretty good. I also had to make use of the resources I had available to me at and close to the location and so this was the best I could do with what I had.

roof: words of advice for long term, you should have used small sticks and clay for the initial layer then throw your tarp on it layer it again because that pipe is gonna heat up eventually and tear that tarp up and start leaks unless you mudd it real good. other than that beautiful craftsmanship sir
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures Год назад
What pipe are you referring to when you say about the pipe heating up? The pipe attached to the top of the chimney is out away from the tarp and travels through virgin earth, then through a stone chimney that is covered with clay and back filled with dirt and then out through the pottery chimney. The other pipe at the back of the shelter in the roof is just a venting pipe and if the heat coming out of the shelter through this pipe is enough to affect the tarp I won't need to worry about this pipe because the entire shelter would need to be on fire.

@RobsBushcraftandAdventures
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures Год назад
Yeah this is the 5th long term shelter I have made on my channel and I'm yet to made a bed from a rack of wood. There is nothing wrong with that if you have a sleep pad to use, but yeah... During the build we had temperatures up to 40C (104F) so the hope with making it below ground and with the dirt up the sides and over the top is that it will be cooler, which it is especially when laying on the bed and closer to the floor.
