How do I use factory connections? How do I connect across long distances? Here are all the answers!
My tutorials and how to guides are aimed at new players, who may have skipped the in game tutorial or found issue with the same. This game has many hidden features, and I aim to show you all of them.
WR:SR is an amazing sandbox city/republic builder, that allows you to control all aspects of your new country, from citizens happiness, health, education to production chains, vehicle and resource production, import export. You can do all this by truck, train, ship, and in the near future plane. There are a million ways to make your republic your own and that’s what we will do.

This video clears up a lot of assumptions I had with the storage in this game. One thing I had thought was a truck drop off does not influence connected storages (ie: push into) when you drop them directly into a storage building. I had assumed incorrectly that it gets "pushed" by the cargo station attached and the truck is simply dropping off at the station. But not only does it affect connected storage, it distributes them evenly.

Great video, thanks bballjo. I've not seen anybody else post a vid of this but its a trick I do with factory connections and silos that works around the limited space and connections, particularly in a tight space. For instance if you have a train depot near a farm. I connect a truck depot to 4 silos and the train to 2 of those silos. I put DO's to dump at the silos and a train to run between the depot to wherever, say a food plant. The problem is the train will only pull from the 2 silos it's connected to while the other 2 at the truck stop remain full. For that I put a single truck in the truck depot and put it to pick up and drop off at the same point. It never leaves the depot it just constantly rebalances the food in the silos. This allows the train to drain all 4 silos.

@@bballjo I was pleasantly surprised, it's kind of like running a truck in a loop to the same truck stop in TF and TF2 to get it to redistribute.

I would also mention that container packing facilities will not draw a constant amount through a factory connection; they will pull goods until they have enough to fill a container, where they then start packing and stop pulling goods. This slows down the rate of packing, but you can use "pumps" like trucks or forklifts to fill the facility with goods to increase the packing rate. "New" vehicles can be pushed/pulled through factory connections too, but not always.

@@mitchumsport The container packing facility stops drawing the unpacked goods, while it is packing, then after it has packed a container, it will start to draw the next lot of goods to pack. To speed things up, you need to push the goods into the packing facility, so there are goods in internal storage ready to pack, when it starts to pack the next container. You can use a truck or forklift to push the goods into the packing facility.

I kind of like that forklifts are low volume. It’s realistic. I use them for stocking shopping centers.

As the grain silos have two parking spots, you can chain as many as you like, by using a truck set to pick up and drop off at the same spot. This makes the silo an active connection, giving it a push and pull characteristic.

No...if you treat the silo as an active connection you're going to get confused....it's a simple passive connection that distributes to all directly connected buildings, exactly like a cargo station. If it was an active connection like an engine, then you would be able to move cargo through the silo, but you can't.

@@bballjo Parking a truck in one of the two parking spots, then setting it to load and unload in the same silo, will turn the silo into a grain conveyer engine. Try it.

A grain conveyor engine doesn't store grain...I'm just telling you how it actually is, you are free to think of it differently, but you will have a bad time because it isn't an engine.

@@bballjo It becomes (behaves) like an engine when you add the static truck (set to load and unload at the same silo). Maybe I'm not explaining it very well, sorry about that. I'll make a short video to demonstrate it when I get time.

Someone else mentioned the parked truck too...but in that case the truck is the engine, isn't it? Anyways, if this is useful, then by all means, use it;)

There is a difference between "no crops moving" and "factories aren't working".... could you clarify which one it is?

@@bballjo factories aren’t working after they finished all the crops then a missing resource appeared (crops ) , they have power , sewage , water and workers, they even pulled from the silo couple of times until all stoped missing crops, silo has crops but nothing is moving anymore so i ordered auto purchase for 8 ton per factory until i figure it out but i can’t

@h2opolo1111 hm...I'm assuming as you're commenting below this video, that you understand the basics...like direct connections only, the silo only extends the factory storage so the factory won't show those crops... something that's new since this video came out is one way factory connections, but I'm guessing you would have seen that by now... I'm hoping you play with vanilla buildings, otherwise it would be hard to nail down. My best advice now is come by my discord, and share some pictures, maybe we can figure out something there...you could also send the save to me for a "fix", but then I would hope there are more things to address;)

Can forklifts drive through buildings to reach other buildings? If I put a forklift on the left side of a warehouse but need it to work on the right side, will it drive through it? If I add a forklift to the cargo train station, will it too drive through the cargo train station to access the other factory connections?

They can only drive through dedicated structures, like forklift garages and factory crossings...but I wouldn't be surprised if there are some mods that let you drive through it

still kinda confused...i got a farm connected with a silo and on the other connections to the farm i got a few things that use plants. harvest gets stored in the farm and silo, and gets distriputed from the farm, but dies it come back out of the silo? or is that just something to have as kinda overflow and i need to move it from the silo by other means?

The easiest is usually to pickup directly from the silo, or connect the silo to a cargo station and pickup from there.

@@bballjo im trying to sell the excess but have enough for my own production...if i sell from silo the stuff from the farm gets pushed into the silo to keep fill levels even. trying to sell via distribution office and only over a certen percentage of the silo...

But you said both silo connections are connected to farms...you have to move the grain somewhere to use it...

@@bballjo nope the silo is only connected to the farm, the other productions are connected to the farm not the silo. well guess thats my error for setting it up that way, but it kinda works with some dead capital sitting in the silo (hope they sell the old grain first, before it gets bad) as long as the farm silo can store enough or i need to distribute it from the silo if needed. still alot to learn

Is the grocery store supposed to pull food and other items from a connected warehouse? In my playthrough mine won't.

I have a fabric and clothing factory with a warehouse in middle. I have a forklift garage connected to all three. I'm using the forklift to move fabric to warehouse and clothing to warehouse. However, when I move the clothing from factory to warehouse it goes back to the clothing factory. Why would a warehouse export clothes to a clothing factory?

Direct factory connections effectively connect the different buildings. In this case each industry has their imports and exports connected with the warehouse, so they are effectively the same...you don't need forklifts if you already have direct connections.

@@bballjo My clothing factory isnt sending anything to the warehouse. Does the factory export inventory have to be full before it will send to warehouse?

@@bballjo I did. It’s not intuitive. I get that the warehouse is an extension of the factory’s space and the push/pull factors. Another way to ask my question, for a DO with instructions to pick up anything at warehouse, does the DO see the combined inventory of the factory and warehouse? Meaning even if the warehouse has nothing, as long as the factory has something, it will go to the warehouse and pull it through the warehouse from the factory?

@mjr7991 yes. They can see everything that is directly connected to the warehouse, or any building with direct factory connections. Import/export storages are treated as it's 1 building.

Direct connection doesn't seem applicable in all instances. I have two stores (one grocery for meat and food and one for clothes) directly connected to a warehouse, but the stores do not pull the resources from the warehouse. I have to drive trucks around the block, lol.

You don't...a direct connection means the connected storage is added to the buildings storage. However, all connections have a throughput limit per second...I don't think the factory connections can handle more than the large shopping center full of shoppers.

@@bballjo Please bare with me, I'm a noob and play on realistic so I hardly have any poulation (visitors at stores) at all. The stores don't pull anything and do not use the warehouse as storage. So I tried to deliver the goods via truck from the warehouse all around the block to the stores. So. what happened when I delivered the 5 tons of food to the grocery store? All but what was already in the store was pulled back into the warehouse through the factory connection lol. So I managed to accomplish the exact opposite of what I was trying to do 🤪 I love this game.

​@@bballjo I'm facing something like this. A store, directly connected to a two warehouses (meat and everything else) and the store doesn't push the goods in a continuous flow, it's more like little waves (0.8 tons at time) when the store storage reach zero. In time, i saw a video from Oyleeke or DDenisshow (sorry, I really don't remember now) commenting about this issue. It's weird because if I setup the DO to fill up the store instead the warehouse, keeping the factory connection on both, the balancing thing will occur and the warehouse will start to fill up in a fast rate. Maybe a little bug in the last updates? In time: your series are very explanatory. I always turn to them to clear doubts. Thanks for sharing all of this with us!
