When we bought this little 1920’s renovation property the garden had been left untouched for best part of 50 years. As such it was completely overgrown and full of invasive plants such as brambles and bindweed. It was time to start again. Welcome to year 1 of our new garden!

You and Mrs Mac have really earned sitting in the garden with a cool drink looking at what you've both achieved.

That was oddly, very satisfying to watch. Unfortunately, it also made me realise that I'm past it now. My back couldn't do it. I'll be looking forward to the following installments. Still, as I'm an ex-Jesmond lad now retired to the south of France, at least I can enjoy the sunshine on my parched patch. 🌞

As someone who loves helping wildlife in their garden that before shot looks better than the after one in my opinion. I can only hope you checked for animals such as hedgehogs, which that before shot looked like a fantastic habitat for them, before clearing it all. The after shot would work for someone like me if the lawn was replaced with a wildflower meadow, that along with the bushy shrubs etc in the borders would be heaven & make for a fantastic wildlife friendly garden.

Andy, what a transformation! You and Mrs Mac certainly win the first prize for transforming a garden almost entirely by hand and at low cost. This was a tremendous amount of work and the new backyard looks awesome. Whenever I need encouragement to make landscaping and hardscaping work I will come back to this video. Congratulations and looking forward to see how you will transform your garden further. Well done!

There's so much enjoyment watching new shrubs fill out and grow. It takes about 2 years for them to put down a good root system and get established, but those first flowers and colourful foliage make it worth the wait.

There is nothing quite a satisfying as enjoying the results of hard work, whatever that work is. Gardening has a special place in the enjoyment of hard work. Well done, a good base has been established. Hope you make time to enjoy it with Mrs Mac.

Wow, what a difference. Give yourself and your wife a big pat on the back - you've both earned it. I would imagine that in a few years time your garden is going to look really beautiful. Must admit, I'm quite envious of the river at the bottom - I wish I had that in mine. Its been so enjoyable watching you make over the house and garden. Thank you for all the posts.
@robthewaywardwoodworker9956
You and the Mrs. have done an amazing work here, Andy. We get to watch the highlights but we don't see the blood, sweat, and undoubtedly tears that go into a labour of love such as this. I had almost forgotten the jungle of a garden you first bought. So wonderful what you have accomplished. Well done and cheers to you and the family!

All looks and feels very familiar - digging endless roots, random buried 'stuff' in your way, and the tinge of regret when you have to remove a tree that's just in the wrong place; all things I've experienced recently when clearing parts of our quite large and very mature garden to make it easier for us to look after so we can spend what little time we do have in the garden on cultivating fruit & veg and enjoying the view. Looking forward to your tips on planting next episode...and accompanying you on the journey when the next phase and veg plots are done!

@@freetolook3727 I used a company.TP knotweed solutions, they’re work all over the uk,they use a Natural herbicide that’s very efficient, 1st treatment was done in June 2017, and the treatment was that effective that it started killing it within 4 hours, after a second treatment in November, it was completely dead, in January 18 they came along & cleared all the canes, 4 years on , there’s been no sign of it returning

I just was tackling my backyard yesterday after 2 years. It was way overgrown. We finally got some weather under 90 degrees after a month long heatwave. I took down a tree that was right against my neighbor's garage. It was over 15 feet tall, 8" thick. The weeds in front had totally overgrown the pavers. I still have half to go.

oof, wild plants is one thing, but when there's plastics and metal bits all over the place that job gets really annoying (and dangerous for the tools). talking of experience here. on my ground there's a lot of "trash" buried in the ground sadly, so digging any wholes usually leads to real frustration. Last time I put up a new wall to take care of level difference between neighbors ground I found an old piece of iron pipe, 4 inch diameter and at least 5 yards long...that kind of stops your digging progression for a bit...

Did you consider planting cover crops for the areas that you intended to convert from grass in the future? Plants that could just be chopped in position to build the soil a bit, I mean. I (by "I", I really mean my wife overruled me!) made the mistake of planting grass in my garden with no thought to future development. It's still grass today because I just never made the time to plant other stuff, and we can't agree what would look best! Had we just left the soil, or put in a comparatively ugly cover crop, it'd have forced our hand as well as got us used to the delineation of the space into planting and grass.
