The Star Adventurer Mini, or SAM, is a portable system that attaches to your tripod and camera to allow you to take extremely long (such as 60 seconds to 5 minutes) exposures without star trails. In this video I explain how it works, show you how to set it up, provide examples and share tips like using your own software and polar alignment.

This is by far the best video I have found on how to use this thing. . . . and I am still lost! Thanks for the simple break down on how to use the SAM.

Very good video. Thanks so much. BTW, when I saw how you connected the illuminator to the dec bracket, I realized why I was never able to connect the illuminator to the scope or the bracket. I received the wrong piece; it doesn't connect to the scope, the bracket or the illuminator. After seeing many videos and using the unit for several months, the mystery is solved! Whew; now I just get to get the right piece from Sky Watcher. You're great.

Amazing video, thanks for sharing it. There are not many videos on the SAM. I use it only during Winter, so it is great to have this and do a quick refresh of the whole process.

My plate that mounts to the tracker at 5:00 is 3/8" but the hole in the tracker is like 1/4"... This is interesting

Very nice and complete video. I wonder about the use of the compass. Do you not get any deviation caused by the metal in the mount? Generally it is a problem. I also like to use a digital inclinometer to adjust the latitude correctly. Thanks and regards

Somehow i got a 2nd hand mini come with most of the stuff except the polar lens, from the user manual it didnt tell which model it is and official website seems got a few model to choose, hope you can shed me the light as I seems stuck on this part, or is it possible i use ig without the polar lens? does anybody know, if I can buy this somewhere second hand at a reasonable price. I really think it will help me get better astrophotos, but unfortunately I cannot afford a new one!

My mini, only 3 weeks old, has developed a problem. It wont power up via the batterys. It shuts down after 1 second. Also the batterys get hot after a 20 mins of been in the unit. It works fine via the usb port. It had been working fine up until today. Any ideas?

Had the same problem. My UK retailer arranged with the UK distributor to collect the SAM and it was replaced free of charge. New one works fine.

I've got my SAM and I wonder if anyone tried to go over the 4kg weight limit with the counterweight. Does it suffer?

Thanks for the video but maybe turn the music down a wee bit. Now, how do I track the Milky Way given that it is in the opposite direction to the pole star?
@tehrsbash
@tehrsbash Год назад
Not sure if you've figured out a solution yourself already but thought I'd drop a reply. The Milky Way will still track with siderial movement since it's part of the deep sky - so you'll likely want to use a ball head to rotate the camera to be looking backwards, however using the DEC + ASC on the dec bracket you can with a little bit of manipulation allow the camera to face backwards towards the milky way core.

Is it possible to just avoid using the polar alignment tool, if you just use the compass? Also, do I need to match the degree of polaris
@DeepSkyWorkflows
@DeepSkyWorkflows 2 года назад
It depends. For wide-angle shots (< 50mm focal length) a rough alignment should be fine. If you are trying to photograph at higher magnification then polar alignment is a must. I find it only takes me a few minutes to get really good alignment. One tip is to do it at dusk when Polaris just becomes visible. Not only are you less likely to confuse it with other stars, but you can see the alignment graph without having to turn the red backlight on.

The short answer - yes but you'll get star trails (streaks at every point of light) on your video. Magnetic north (with a compass) is NOT the same as "polar alignment north" because the earth doesn't rotate straight up and down - it's at an angle; and Polaris happens to be very, very close to the "north" sky objects appear to rotate around (the earth is actually doing the rotating).

Even after 2 months with my New Teleskope and hundreds of hours of RU-vid Videos, i still get confused by the amount of axis i have, which axis on a telescope needs to be setup, which ones are free to adjust the framing or do i have any, cause even following your setup, pointing north and Set to 52° because thats my longitude, i still cant seem to follow the Stars i still need to adjust 2 axis at the same time to keep following the Star cause it slightly moves from bottom left to up right in my scope and it messes with my head

Do you polar align?

Also, your mount needs to be level.
