Great videos, saved me hours of work trying to figure out how to make my 6L90 suck less. A few small changes made a big difference

Old dude on the 67-72 c10 forum found a way to hardwire straight to the tcm with a resistored microswitch that lets you bypass the bcm

so happy to watch another series, super! my question would be what your opinion on the tranny tune when you change tires( street vs track) do you adjust tune for it as well? or there is some other tricks?
@SilverSurfer77
@SilverSurfer77 Год назад
Wow great question! You made me realize I left out an important part! Now I need to make another addendum video lol. Depending on the change in tire size, it may not be worth changing the tune. My drag radials are smaller than my street tires and I leave it alone. You can use the tire/gear wizard in HPT to update the speedo and recalibrate the shift points.

You have it backwards transmission helps engine warmer up, especially in Cold areas.

You bring up a good point. I have never done empirical testing, but I would think this is a complex topic due to many factors. Off the top of my head: ambient temp, airflow across radiator, how many bugs are in the radiator, is the vehicle moving, how much heat is being generated by the trans (function of converter slip and RPM), is the trans in gear or park, etc.
@SilverSurfer77
@SilverSurfer77 Год назад
I will add that in all cases I can remember, watching the HPT scanner, it shows ECT coming up well before trans temp. So that would indicate the engine heats the trans. At least with my parts stack and in my region of the world.

I just ran directly to the added cooler. Then I added a electric thermostat to turn the fan on at 150f. Ran fine for 100k, then I traded it in.

@SilverSurfer77 it holds true in my part of the world which is on the opposite corner as yours. It is somehow frustrating when the engine is all warmed up to destroy some fords but the trans is still a bit cold.

Good day sir, i was wondering if you could help me with a little problem with my ZF8HP Transmission. I have a very fast 5-6 shift(atleast it feels fast) but it feels like its getting "hung up" on something. On low rpms it feels like it pulls too much torque but the torque management i adjusted down to 40% of the original value and it still feels not very smooth. the nominal slip time is around 100ms(stock) i tried raising it to 150-200ms but it feels very much the same. The stock torque management pulls around 500nm max out of the transmission from 5-6 all the other tables for the upshifts are at max 390nm i wonder whats going on with that since the gear spread is almost the same from 3rd to 8th. Any ideas how i can make it smoother and still be reasonably fast? I kept pressure almost the same in all cases only adding maybe 0.1-0.3 bars to the higher torque areas. I am quite lost right now. Any help is much appreciated :)

Hello friend, unfortunately I don't know anything about ZF transmissions. Good luck on your quest.

When I try to floor it when in 6th street driving the downshift is horrible, feels like the trans is going to blow up. I put it in manual mode and just down shift it myself now

@wyattguttery9614 yeah never WOT downshift the 6L80! It will kill it quickly. You're smart to TUTD to a lower gear first.

Any chance you will add your HPT file to the google drive? I also have a 2014 commodore.

No I want to avoid doing that. The goal here is for each person to learn what is needed to work on their combination. There is no replacement for learning by doing. Simply handing over a tune isn't going to help you learn and may not even be what works for your vehicle. Heck my TCC settings may destroy your TCC clutches and I don't want that to happen. I feel like I have provided the most in depth and comprehensive tuning guide for 6L80E anywhere in the internet, and it is totally free. I am not even monetized by RU-vid and have no received a dime from them. I could be persuaded with money though, but I don't want that to come off as sounding greedy or weird. However, when you realize how many hours and gasoline I have invested in figuring this stuff out in my car...and then translating all that into this vast series on RU-vid...and you realizing how much time/gasoline you will save by copying my tune...$100 is actually the steal of a century. Still, I would rather you work through this stuff on your own.

@@SilverSurfer77 i think what you understood from me asking that is not at all what i meant. by the time i asked if you would upload a tune i had already been through your series entirely and had sat with hptuners up on a separate laptop and was making changes as you went in the video, hence why my comment is on the conclusion video. I am a big advocate of the DIY mentality and by no way am i trying to flash your tune into my vehicle because as you said it could be dangerous. the main thing i was after was seeing what other differences throughout i might find and research those to see if perhaps something i hadn't thought to adjust, you did. Greatly appreciate the series, as you said many hours went into that and i gotta say after flashing the new changes and driving the car i'm quite happy with the performance of the trans. i have yet to do a high stall but its next on my list and then turbo of course. still have a few things to iron out with shift timing etc but overall great improvement over stock. i had looked for the last year on info to tune the 6l80 and there just wasn't much until this series. we are all extremely thankful for you taking the time to put this together and i can say personally i learned a ton about how the parameters stack together to get the final calculation from your slides so thank you once more. look forward to seeing future videos from you on this stuff.
