Most people, I think. So often my Sims get fears that seem so inappropriate and are such a pain to get rid of. I really hate everyone running around with a fear of the dark.
With a strong passion. And I hate that they got rid of whims. For me I used this to help me do something when I'm just idling in game not sure what to do with my sim next when I've completed what I want them to do. But the fact that I'm forced to do these wants and fears at a set time annoyes the bejeezuz out of me.
Fears wouldn’t be be too bad if they weren’t too common. Like my Sims would get fear of dead end job even after getting a promotion. And my child sim has a fear of the dark. I have tried going outside confident after brushing teeth and psyching self up, but he didn’t overcome it
Welcome to the real world! Having a fear sucks and people IRL have stupid fears their whole lives! The Sims is just being realistic. Instead of complaining about the game's realism, maybe IRL try to overcome your own fears. The world will be a better place for it :3 Maxis is giving people ideas on how to overcome these fears IRL. If you are worried about being cheated on, confront your partner about it. If you are worried you won't fullfill your dreams, try to make time for doing what you want. If you are worried about a dead-end job, try to regain passion for it, go in with a different mindset or approach or switch to a different career. I can literally go through each of these fears in the base game and it is actually GOOD ADVICE for how to overcome these fears IRL. Fear of ghosts/fear of death/fear of cowplant ones in the game regard characters that don't exist IRL, but other than that, really take the hint the game is telling everyone! Fears are annoying! So, IRL try to confront and overcome them. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself!
Both are fair and realistic reasons. Not like fear of the dark or fear of a dead end job or fear of unfulfilled dreams, which absolutely need adjusting. I think if a Sim is in a job which is part of an active or fulfilled aspiration, and Sims at the top of a career they should be immune to the fear of a dead end job. There should also be a purchasable trait "dream job" which makes them immune. Fear of unfulfilled dreams should not appear if you are working on your new years resolution or aspiration or fulfilling any wants, it comes on far to quickly and doesn't take anything into account. Fear of the dark shouldn't just be mildly bad moodlets in the dark it should have to be seeing vampires biting someone or a near death experience (nearly freezing or burning to death etc.) or witnessing a death. Maybe children could stay easily afraid of the dark but I'm sick of my teens and adults having to clear this because they went clubbing and we're briefly uncomfortable. All Sims with party traits Party animal dance machine outgoing etc should be immune to the fear of crowded places and those who are working on or have completed the social aspirations.
Two main things to know about Wants/Fears: 1. There's a bug where even if you disable Wants/Fears in the settings, they will return whenever you have a transition screen (CAS, restarting the game, travelling etc). You need to keep going back to the settings to turn Wants/Fears on and off again to make it stick. 2. You can buy a Fear Be Gone potion from the reward store with satisfaction points. There is a handy bug where you can pause the game, use the potion, remove a fear, then cancel the Drink Potion action in the queue. This removes the fear without using the potion, so you only need to buy one and keep it in your Sim's inventory for the next time they develop a fear.
I miss whims. I never had a problem with whims. Especially since I could remove them easy without wasting my points or needing cheats to remove moods and traits. Wants and fears are the pits!
fear of fire is most idiotic thing in whole "want's and fears". If I am affraid of fire then I will do my best to NOT causing fire! And I hate that I can't remove "want" - I have a married couple, they are soulmates, full friendship bar and full romance bar. And wife "want" to cheat on her husband because she don't love him anymore! Girl what the hell?! It's soooooo iritating, it destroy my storyline completly! I really miss previous whims, at least you can remove them and they included EVERY pack that I bought (with a lot of money), not only basegame. I really hate EA
@@reynavaldez13 Newsflash, your sims may want different things for their lives than you do. ^_~ Think of how many times this happens IRL with what parents want for their kids. It could have nothing to do with what the kid wants in life. Life lesson, you can either respect their choices or be a dick about it lol.
@@TheOG-GG but this is NOT real life but game. There should be "x" button to remove this "want" because I have storyline in my head and I want to have control on what I want! If I decide to not have control on my own game I will watch sone let's plays on internet or leave my game unpaused. I know some simmers like chaos etc but it MUST BE MY CHOICE to decide.
@@reynavaldez13 I also found the way they deal with fear of cowplant really idiotic. Like they would be too scared of any regular plant that has nothing to do with it to work in the garden, but can try to eat the cake a second time... And also got a sim with fear of dead end job despite getting regularly promoted, but its like they think they should get promoted like every other workday
This is super interesting! I didn't know about the cowplant fear 😂 Personally I think that the fear of dead-end job and the fear of unfulfilled dreams occur a little too often and thus are also time consuming to get rid of. I hope there's going to be a fix for wants and fears soon.
12:58 The Fear of Swimming/Water one is definitely sims-centered. Why? Because ever since The Sims and all the later Sims games, people have been drowning their sims in a pool to kill them. So it does make perfect sense that sims have a stronger fear of water/swimming than the rest.
God i have to keep drinking fear be gone potions. Theres one fear thats a complete pain. "Fear of dead end job" Like im trying to challenge myself to get my sim to the max promotion and i have to constantly drink the potion since they get the same fear LITERALLY every day they come home from work. I think the fears need to be a lower chance of appearing. Since i enjoy the challenge. But theyre way too frequent
I get it literally from the first day they even get to work and it continues every other day especially after they get promoted, like how is it a dead end job when you just got a promotion????? 😩. But I'm not wasting my points on the potion. I just shift click for the cheat menu and cheat Sim details remove the trait and moodlet buff. It's so annoying. Even if the job is in alignment with the Sims traits they always get this fear.
This one especially could be so fun if it was done right... The interesting thing about wants and fears with previous sims games for me was that if often didn't align with what you had in mind for your sims so it made them feel like they had their own mind that could very well contradict yours and you'd feel like a terrible God making your Sims act against their own will while being so miserable they would have to see a psychiatrist at some point. In this case, YOU want your sim to max out a certain career but the sim in question would feel tortured by you making them do what they don't want at all lol. But the AI of the sims in sims 4 doesn't feel like that like at all, the game's mechanics are all about the player having pretty much total control of their sims and the wants and fears mechanic they put on top of this core gameplay mechanic just feels weirdly off. It doesn't feel like your sim has a mind of their own at all (especially with how often and seemingly random these fears appear), it just feels like an inconvenience for you as a player.
I have a sim that was afraid of the dark, I thought she would grow out of it. I don’t know why but it use to make me so mad to see this girl running while panicking trying to get back to her dorm from her classes.😂
Fear of the Dark can be especially buggy. The way to clear it is to go outside while confident (while the spiky bubble is visible). I did this for a child Sim and it succeeded, apparently. I say "apparently" because when my child aged up, he still had the fear! It wasn't visible in his traits anymore. All attempts to cheat it away failed (I only started using cheats and mods to try to fix this poor kid). He would run around in a panic every day as he got home from high school, on sunny afternoons. He was practically unplayable. Then, one day, he just stopped having it. I never figured out what solved it. It's not the game being fixed, since I have an adult Paranormal Investigator that suddenly had the exact same issue (the fear reaction without the trait). I ended up having to install a mod that blocks fears, since the toggle is buggy for me and fears would always turn back on. (I don't mind Wants; they're fine.) Paranormal Investigator is a night job, so it was pretty much unplayable without a mod, even clicking the fear moodlets away with UI Cheats. 😔
The idea of you helplessly screaming at your screen while your sims does that stupid scared run is pretty halarious though.💜🤗 been there soooo many times. Currently trying to live in sulani without becoming afraid of the water. 🙄
Fear of fire drove me mad. Because when you have it, you're more likely to cause a fire. Like 3 times consecutively. And when there is absord amount of fires happening, your other Sims in the family will also develope this fear, which causes even more fires :) Ended up using cheats to finally get rid of the fear.
This was so helpful. Thanks Petey! I didn't know the fear had to be in the spiky bubble in order to clear it. I was getting frustrated! An annoying thing about the Fear of Dead-end Job is that it doesn't go away when your sim gets a promotion 😑 at least it doesn't go away in my game!
0:15 especially the dead end job fear is so infuriating. 0:47 I’d rather turn off just the fears I’ve since been using the ui mod by right clicking the icons
I tried playing with fears on, got a job for my sim in the culinary career (since I wanted her to be a chef) but then after two days of work she got the "fearful of dead end career". It literally made no sense so I just play with Wants and Fears off now. I wish we could pick their fears and wants rather than them being totally random. Also the debuff it gives are really annoying to deal with.
fear of fire is most idiotic thing in whole "want's and fears". If I am affraid of fire then I will do my best to NOT causing fire! I totally hear you about the fear of fire thing. I fear fire IRL--this means I take extra care to empty dryer lint traps, unplug any small item with a heating element (irons, hair dryers, and such) when I'm not using it even if it's turned off, never leave a room with a lit candle or other open flame unless there's another person there _that I trust will keep an eye on it_ , and investigate suspicious smells and sounds that might mean a stove left on or something. I don't know about whims, but the mod "UI Cheats Extension" lets you get rid of fears.
My favorite thing about wants and fears is when I turn the fuckin' thing off, because it's so ungodly annoying, but then they keep popping up, even though I, you know *turned them off*
Thank you for this! I hadn’t played the sims 4 in a long while and came back to this new system so confused. I feel like I’m in the minority because I really liked whims, how mood and other things could affect them (and how you could x some out). The change to wants and fears was a bigger switch than I thought it would be.
About the fear of a dead end job…if you have the get to work expansion and a job that can follow the sim to work, fallowing they sim to work DOES NOT COUNT your sim has to go to work on their own…believe me, I’ve tried to fallow my sim to work (she’s a werewolf, and at the time, had a tendency to leave work early to rampage) and the fear would not go away, even after regaining passion
I feel like this is buggy, all my sims have fears of a dead end job even if it’s tied into their aspiration and also all they want to do listen to music, so boring
Yes exactly! And not only that but they’ll “conquer” their fear and then go back to work the next day and get the fear back again. Its so incredibly annoying and the fears should be much harder to get
I like wants and fears but I wish they’d have an appreciation for their jobs because every job is passionless, or they’re always angry, like if they get promoted why would it be passionless, it’s annoying 😢 so I’m constantly using the potions 😏 thank you for sharing.
Has anyone found or made a mod that brings the original whims back without the fears/wants? I know that its probably an incredibly difficult thing to program or overwrite but just curious since I hate wants/fears and miss the old whims
I really wish when you conquer a certain a fear, it stays off. Like, if you are over your fear of the dark, you shouldn't have to KEEP conquering it. Its so stupid.
I disabled them but still get fears all the time...I hate them! I don't get any wants at all. Luckily I have cheats which get rid of the fears with just a click (but the damn things keep coming back).
@@aliciacooper8662 Ui Extensions allow you to get rid of them by right clicking on them. I use it to clear the buffs that come with the fears too. They do come back though. xx
Immediately after they came out i modded them out so you can have only wants or remove just the fears you dont like, i then modded a different version where fears would be less likely to be triggered, they are on mod the sims
Only having wants seems really helpful, I liked to farm whims for satisfaction points if I was saving up for something to improve a storyline. What is your mod called?
Side-note is that last I checked, the Fear of the Dark is actually bugged to not clear properly. I've had paranoid and child sims in multiple households still get a fear moodlet pop up when the fear has seemingly cleared, as in, not in the traits bar. Quite annoying.
note: the potion that removes fears is somewhat bugged, it removes the fear from getting the interaction to drink it, not from actually drinking it, so pause the game, tell your sim to drink it, cancel it, unpause the game and your sim no longer has that fear additional note: the "fear of being cheated on" can be triggered by any form of jealousy, even if your sim has a jealous trait and their partner is just friendly
I personally don't care about the dead-end job fear, it's the fear of unfulfilled dreams. At least fear of a dead-end job can be useful for some kind of Stardew Valley type storyline, but fear of unfulfilled dreams is plain annoying. We get it, EA! Sims are somewhat sentient, you already pulled this card in the paranormal pack, and at least then it was executed well! Whims were amazing, I really miss them. I'm also ok with fear of fire, since that's at least an actual and reasonable phobia.
I'm okay with fear of fire existing, and they did pick good trigger events for that one at least. I'm NOT okay with fear of fire's in-game effects. I know from personal experience as someone who fears fire that the game has it completely backwards. When someone is scared of something, they'll make an active effort to AVOID the thing they're scared of. The game knows this, because Sims who fear water will choose to get out of the water. So why do Sims who fear fire become _more_ likely to start fires while doing ordinary things like cooking? Shouldn't they be extra cautious instead? Sure, just making them less likely to cause fires wouldn't inconvenience the player the way other fears do. So what if instead, a Sim with the Fear of Fire could only cook Poor quality meals (at least, those meals that require the stove) while the fear was active, with the explanation that the meal was undercooked because the Sim was so scared of burning it that they took it off the heat too soon? I've definitely done that before IRL, most frequently when cooking potatoes. (They're cooked, they just aren't crispy.)
Also I wish you could relieve the fear of ghosts by talking to them and gaining a positive relationship. I E always liked how in the Sims you can just be mates with dead relatives. I don't get every Sim to do it but I really like that for some of them.
I hate the wants and fears. It's been making my gameplay so difficult cause the fears just get replaced with new ones every time and them getting angry just cause they didn't do a want is annoying.
In Sims 2, fears were constant and there were 3-4 of them simultaneously. You couldn't turn them off nor could you overcome them. They were just there. If a fear happened, it would be immediately replaced with another fear. Plus your sim would lose sanity points and go insane! Play The Sims 2 first. I am pretty sure you will actually like The Sims 4 system better once you do. :3
I think sims 4 need more things like brave, scared-cat you can get a fear easly or harder or social butterfly , selfperson faster to build any realitionships but get more social needs or your social skills are slower to make but you social needs are less
I have a Loner Sim, he hates crowds but I figured out a way to keep him happy. Busking. When he plays music everyone gives him money and he's able to interact a lot longer without a Tense moodlet, it's still shows up but it's overwhelmed by positive moods so the Fear moodlet never appears. He's also afraid of swimming so I make him swim laps every morning after a protein shake for Energizing and plucking some Inspiration, he gets the Overcome Fear moodlet every time.
I know I can just drink a potion and never see his fear of swimming show up again but it's funny that he gets it back the very next time he goes swimming, plus he likes the routine and has leveled up his Mixing skill to 10 just making protein shakes.
the fear of like having “unfulfilled dreams or dead end job” pop up so much. They should tune it to When a sim has been going to work in a bad mood like 3 times in 5 work days they’ll gain the fear. Or if they have been bad at work for 3 days. Also if they haven’t finished an aspiration goal (and they should tune it because some goals take 5 seconds and others take like 20 sim days) so per goal A 5 second goal would make the fear appear in 3 days while the 20 day goal will appear after idk 23 days
i HATE the fear of unfulfilled dreams and Dead-end job! 😤 I cop them ALL the time! Even if i fulfil their wants and getting promotions every other day. 😠 I often remove it with MCCC(?) but they always return even when I do things right. 😤
yeah for me my fears keep coming back like with my dead end job fear or even with my fear of the dark fear i just cant seem to get rid of the traits/fears. oh that explains why my sim who is afraid of the dark cant get over that fear since my sims are more foused on putting out fires as they are all scared of fire lol.
I hate the Wants and Fears, only cause of how quickly you get your fear. I hate doing social wants, like why can't I change it or it change overtime instead of forcing me to? It's a want not a need, I miss the old version, so much easier to get Aspirations points. Edit: I know there's a potion to change it but why do I wanna wast 500 points just to get similar ones?
Do Traits negate any of these fears? For instance, it would be rather silly for a Sim to have a Fear of Fire if they're fireproof from the Naturalist Trait.
Not sure, but I have a vampire sim with day-phobia. And buying the carefree reward that makes it so they never get tense actually did remove that fear and the energy draining aspect of it. It didn't show up before I quit the game and logged in again. I read that vampires dont benefit from the "always full" or "never weary" reward however (thankfully checked it on the net instead of wasted my points)
@@zakosist Makes sense since some Vampire needs are replaced with completely different ones. Thirst isn't the same as hunger, so wouldn't be affected by Forever Full since that only works on the Hunger motive. Good to know about those more unusual trait effects. Could be useful in future.
@@hollyhartwick3832 I still think they should write in-game that those rewards wont work, or just make them unavailable for vampires. Even though thirst is not quite the same as hunger, its kind of the vampire equivalent. And same with energy
@@zakosist I think the reason they don't is because the Vampire Life State isn't truly permanent, so you could wind up getting it before turning into one or make use of it after being cured, so they just leave it available. The only Occult Life State that's permanent is Aliens. Every other one (Vampires, Werewolves, Spellcasters, Mermaids, Plantsims) all can be both gained and lost at any time.
The only time I was okay with fears was my most recent poay through when my sims fear of being cheated on came from my sim getting cheated on and watching his spouse nearly pass away. But thats a one time thing Most of my experience with fears is my sim children getting scared of the dark from monsters under the bed. That one I hate.
I just hate that this is so buggy ass hell, idk about yall but Afraid of the dark moodlet keep coming back and stuck even it is day already outside and already faced the traits so it is gone already but the moodlet, 😫😫😫😩
You know how the game's gyms and bars only play one type of music and you can't turn it off or change the station? Make sure your Sim likes that kind of music or they'll have a very bad time going to those places and will soon not want to go there at all. Otherwise just build a home gym and invite only friends over to work out with and mentor others and have a bar in your yard and throw some pool parties, hire a band if you have the instruments, Sims like live music. So much better than the in-game locations, especially if your Sim is a Loner who gets a lot of Fears.
My explanation: -wants are whims you can’t cancel and get replaced anymore -fears are bullshit, abort, ABORT!! Get them removed with a mod before they ruin your Sim permanently (speaking from experience!!)
I turned wants and fears off because to me they are just annoying. It also gets in the way of storylines. Like for instance once I had a sim who was a single Dad and I did want him in a relationship. However I wanted to take my time with the relationship because his wife who he had a child with walked out on him so he was afraid to get hurt again. Well i got the want for him to become a boyfriend which i did want eventually so I kept it. But then only a day after keeping the wish he got the "fear of unfulfilled dreams" and was stessed and angry ALL the time and it got in the way of him learning skills. Unchecking the wish did not solve the issue. There was a girl he was kinda flirting with so i had him ask her to be his gf, even though they didnt even have a first date yet, and basically rush the romance cause it got in the way of playing my game. After that I never played with wants and fears again. I think the consequences of not resolving the want or fear is too much. It shouldnt get in the way of your storyline or ability to enjoy the game.
To get rid of fear of swimming you can also make a sim go into a pool and then surround the pool in walls. When your sim loses the fear of swimming you delete the walls
With fear of dead end job, I would like to point out that your sim may not get the inspired moodlet. I've had them instead get a negative moodlet about how there was nothing good about their job, and then I'd have to wait for them to roll the fear want again.
I hate the dead end job fear and fire fear. Especially if you dont know how those things can be aquired. I was so annoyed how my taylor swift was always depressed and setting things on fire
my biggest issue with wants was if you have dj music as a like well if you get listen to dj music as want there seems to be no way to make a sim listen to dj music at least i could never figure it out.
I think the concept of Sim fears is a good idea, but it's executed very poorly in TS4. Fear of fire stands out to me because I have it IRL. You know how my fear of fire affects my cooking? I occasionally undercook things (especially potatoes, they're tricky) because I'd rather eat slightly less tasty/crispy food than cause a fire. You know how my fear of fire does NOT affect my cooking? Randomly engulfing the _entire oven_ in flames because I was scared. The other fears have at least semi realistic effects on Sims' lives, especially those with fear of water/swimming who get out of the pool as quick as they can and presumably won't autonomously decide to swim. The poor execution is the events that trigger fears and how frequently they occur. (Ironically, Fear of Fire has the MOST realistic trigger event. Guess you can't have both a good cause and a good effect.)
"if you do know how to deal with them, they aren't too bad".... are you kidding? the female vampire was scared of the dark, my poor boyfriend got rid of the fear legit, but it came back, used potion to get rid of fear - says it doesn't exist. Having a Sim be Scared for 4 hours every time they go outside makes them pretty unplayable. Many people are experiencing this game breaking glitch. This is still not fixed. I have had to turn off wants and fears and now my gameplay is insanely bland. Remember when wants & fears propelled gameplay forward in the sims 3 and it was enjoyable?
does anyone know a good mod that either tunes how often fears happen, gives them better triggers, or just gets rid of them outright? ive just been using UI cheats to delete them, but it's getting irritating!!
It’s so annoying the fear of unfulfilled dreams They always pop up at the weirdest times and the way to solve fears is even more annoying “Talk about blabla” than when I want to talk about it, the option doesn’t even show up. The spikey bubble is just annoying.
