I appreciate you making this video this helped me so much! My older HT died, I haven't been active for years and when I went to buy a new HT I now see digital protocols and I'm scratching my head LOL. I was going to go with DMR but I think I need to go with Fusion after viewing this thanks again!
Matt, I enjoyed your vid on the Wires X system. I have purchased, yet to have delivered, a Yaesu 991A and read that it has the Fusion capability. thanks again for the review and going through the commands. I feel ready to get the radio set up to work anywhere in the world now. 73
They pop up all the time mate so keep a look out! You can always put your radio in wires mode directly into your pc so turns it into an internet radio. 73 and thanks for watching 👍👍
@@m6ceb Excellent! I will have to give that a shot when my new Yaesu FT3DR shows up today. Plenty of time for some research on that kind of direct connection before it arrives. Hopefully I can make it work with a Mac. Will be fun to try to solve it, at least!
Hi Matt, came across your RU-vid channel when looking for further information on C4FM and Wires X. I purchased the FT3DE and then realised that I required additional equipment so I have just purchased the FTM 400DXE and the HRI 200, plus a few other goodies. I am hopeful that, once I have watched your video a couple of times I will get a grasp of the task ahead. I am a complete novice with regards to C4FM /Wires X.I'll let you know how I get on. Krs Sid M0WCH
OK.... So a radio signal comes into your radio, then goes through the WIRES X box into the internet, goes around the world somewhere..... how does it get to a radio on the other end? Or does it turn into a written message somehow? And what is a "room"? A geographical area? Or a group of people? I don't understand.
Hi Matt. Thank you for this video. Having been away from Ham Radio for 15 years and not familiar at all with the new digital modes this was very useful for me to get an idea. My oh My... how has technology progressed. To be honest... I might stick with my old tried and tested CW and SSB modes... as they say Matt... its hard to try and teach an old Dog (76) new tricks !!! Albert. EI7II.
Newbie here. There is no gateway in my area so I would like to set one up. If I would like to use Wires-X in my truck, I would need the 200 box set up at my house? Or could I simply connect my home radio to the internet using my PC and the Wires-X software and connect to it through my truck radio? I'm not looking to host a room at this time.
thanks for this video. I have no Fusion repeaters near me. Is it expensive to set up my own? I don't mind paying a little money if it gets me access here and around town.
Can I use my ftm 500 as a node and use my ft3 d to talk through my 500 node what’s the set up? I have my 500 set up on my computer and working that way. Thanks for any help. Not sure about frequency set up on the 500 and the ht to make this work thanks Steve WD8BQS
I have FT-991A (Wires X Compatible) with latest firmware which is tied via USB to my desktop W11 PC which is tied to the internet. If I had a Wires X HT, why couldn't I use the FT-991A to RX and TX a connection to wires x without HRI-200 assuming the PC is installed with proper software?
I'm just trying to figure out how to access & use a system Fusion repeater. No wires X. I have a YSF number to enter. How do I do this? Can't find anything but wiresX videos
So do i need an Hr200 with any kind of digital yaesu radio maybe a hT to have my own node ? Does it have to be a mobile transciever to like ftm 100 or ft 400 with the hri200 connected to the internet to have my own room. Just bought an ft3d. what can i do with that in fusion?
You don't need a HRI 200 for your own node, but you do if you want to host your own room. If you want to run a PDN node, you need a wires x fusion compatible radio, ie. FT3D back to either a FTM100 or FTM 400 as a base radio. I currently use a HT FT3D in PDN mode back to a FTM 100 at the house with no need of a HRI 200.
Im fairly new to HAM radio, just took the Tech exam late May 2020. Got my Extra in August. Have spent most of my time on local 2 meter...pretty active in the tulsa area. Ive also spent a lot of time with SDR....SDRuno software....RX-ing. Havent had a lot of desire to TX, so have just been satisfied with setting up HF antennas and tuning into various HF frequencies and nets. With all of that...my next step into the hobby is going to be DMR. Ive been told by several of the active operators that for the area Im in Fusion is it. Im still not perfectly clear on the definitions of DMR vs Fusion vs Wires X. Wanting to step into this area would you suggest something like a Yaesu FT-70dr or should I jump up to an FT-3dr...?
Thanks for the good info Matt. I am struggling though to understand if I need the FTM100DR. I have an FT-991A in the Ham Shack, an FTM 400XDR in the Jeep, and a FT60R handheld. I am unable to connect to local C4FM enabled repeaters. Not sure why, they are very strong in FM mode but C4FM doesn't connect on either the 991 or the 400. So... I was thinking of getting an HRI-200 but was wondering if I buy a FTM100DR to use as the node radio I assume I could use the 991A or the 400 to connect to it correct? Appreciate any additional information and thanks again for sharing your expertise on RU-vid.
Ran into fusion going on a repeater connected to our area wide system. Have an ft60r but no go trying to see if they heard me. What else since all star links this way and I get in just fine What Did I miss?
I have the FTM 400 and also a 991a did I hear you correctly that there is a firmware update available that will allow you to get onto wires X Directly on your home computer? Do you have the link to download the firmware and are there any other videos that you’re aware of with instructions on how to use this new feature
Hi, great video, very informative. I'm currently studying for my Foundation Licence, just got a Yaesu FT3DE, is there anyway I can turn it on just to listen to, like my Uniden 125XLT? It's asking for my call-sign, some hams say to type 00000, or A1AAA... I just don't want Ofcom knocking on the door before I've even started... In advance, thank you very much for your time. Best regards,
Hi Matt, a bit late to the party on this video but as my local repeater has C4FM functionality, is there any benefit to me buying the WiresX box? I'm a little confuzzed....
Hi Matt and thanks for the enthusiastic presentation. Is it possible to make a "white list" of users (friends / club members) to allow exclusive use of a room? Or is that against the spirit of Fusion / frowned upon? I'm thinking here of the ever present problem of abuse.
Very impressive but my 86 year old brain is spinning. Still it is all there I can go back and sort it bit by bit. I do have Wires but not with the ft1 yet. I was waiting for help on C4FM which have yet to get to work. I use Wires with the 991a. Thx anyway--I shall be back!,….Peter. G0KYX
Dear Sir... so basically, I just want to host my own room. So me and my friends can connect to with our mobile radios.. Do I only need the Yaesu HRI-200 ?? It's a shame I can't run something as a virtual machine or something. Thank you
Really helpful Matt. I’ve just got a ftm300 and I’m going to start playing with Fusion and WiresX. One question, do you need to register like you do for Dstar? Thanks, Will 👍🏻
There is a fusion wires-x repeater nearby. Can I use a radio with this option without a hotspot or internet & connect with groups, rooms &make long distance contacts? Looking at a 300dr
See this excellent RU-vid video.... its very long... but the most detailed one I have seen. Very very worthwhile watching !!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BV321C4mx20.html Jackie... I am doing exactly what you want to do.. using the Yeasu FT300 radio.
Quick question, I'm searching for a c4fm ht but in your video everything looked so easy is that because the radios you used had a wires X button? Can I just get a radio the has c4fm only or will it be more complicated to use, Thank you.
All c4fm handies are easy to use and have a wires x button. I would highly recommend either the FT1, FT3 or FT5 radios. All are really simple to use on digital. Thanks for watching 73
Hi everyone, I am new to Yaesu fusion, just bought a FTM-100 that I am intending to use as a node. I am going to purchase a handheld but I don't know if I should go for the FT70 or the FT2... Any suggestion? Thanks for you help Dom F5LER
Hi, For a new "more senior" user, just got an FT-3D interesting overview. Unfortunately I don't have any nearby Repeaters or Nodes. So looking at getting a OpenSpot, till I can get an external antenna.
Very jealous lol 🤣 the ft3 looks an amazing radio! There are loads of gateways and repeaters springing up all over! My gateway is MB6IFR 431.1375mhz in Freckleton... Not sure where you are tho. Thanks so much for watching 🙏👌
so with the ft3d i just bought i can plug it into my laptop and do VOIP essentialy through wires X without having to buy an HRI 200 and another yaesu digital radio to wires X ?
Thanks for your video, but I am now SURE that I want nothing to do with digital.......I'll take a radio connected to an antenna...with NATURAL-SOUNDING AUDIO (analog)...over internet "ham radio" ANY TIME!!! Just my point-of-view.....
Great video Matt, good to see Yaesu Fusion explained well! If I can pick your brains, have you any experience using wires-x via the HRI-200 on an FT991A? I'm totally new to this and am assuming I can hook one up straight up and access rooms etc but was wondering about repeater options using my 991A as there are currently none anywhere near me? If necessary I can PM you my email if you get the time to explain?! de Steve M0LVL
Thanks so much Steven 🙏 I've no experience with the 991 but I'm prety sure that has it inbuilt but I'm not 100% sure tbh 🤔 nice radio tho and one I would like in the future 🙏
@@m6ceb No problem mate, as I said very good effort! I know the 991A has the built-in soundcard but it will only do simplex on C4FM as I understand it pal. I will need the HRI-200 to connect to the internet and be able to access rooms or create my own node etc but again, I'm new to this side of amateur radio so might be missing a trick!
HOLA SOY HERNAN DE CALI, HJ5ZQM RADIO, I HAVE A YAESU FT2DR AND I CANN.T CONEX NODE, ANITHINGS NOTHING FUNCTION IS BAD THE EQUIPMENT AND VERY HIGH THE VALUE COST INN COLOMBIA CALI AGLY
I applaud your efforts to provide information, however you unfortunately didn't really succeed! Clearly you have some knowledge but no way of presenting it in a structured way! Instead of trying to be all things to all men, why not focus on the individual elements raised in this video? I'm particularly interested in the FT1DX and C4FM, which is why I ended up watching your video. You could've made two 10 minute, beginners guides to the FT & CF4M which would've been much more useful (to me). Whilst the rest of video was marginally interesting in its presentation, it could hardly be described as a 'complete guide'. Good effort, but you would benefit hugely from researching how to put a (video) presentation together logically and then try making a few short video's, each on a single subject, which you can then link together. 73's Lin.
He succeeded perfectly in presenting the video that he created, just because you didn't get the information you wanted in a structured way doesn't mean he didn't succeed, you suck at the internet's, give up \o/
@Storm Rider.... dude...show us a video you made that meets your standards... I don't see anything in your sole video resembling the expectations you have above... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jNKE1PTThEE.html
Hi there, great vid, very well explained, thanks. I’ve just begun to use my ft3d and had my first wires x qso’s today. Now I want a bit more power so am looking at ftm400 and ftm300. Have you bought a 300 yet? I’m not sure that it’s a winner over the old 400, aside from the dual C4FM, I don’t see any advantage. I Would appreciate your thoughts. Cheers M0VZZ.
Matt, This is really great, thanks! I recently obtained an FTM-100DR which I installed in my vehicle. I loaded up all of my local repeaters via SD card (which was also great!) and was off and running. This morning I connected to my local System Fusion repeater and immediately heard a conversation between a guy in Northern Ireland and another in Toronto. I was stunned, because I was not in any WiresX room nor had done any special configuration. The repeater does not list any linking. I'm assuming this is a Fusion under the hood functionality, but I'm struggling to understand it. Thanks! Brian - KC3PFR, Ellicott City, MD
Just talked with someone who indicated that the repeater must be set up with a "default" room. I have since had an interaction where it seemed like people "in the room" could not hear me, but people "on the repeater" could. (local contact could hear me and the room traffic, but room traffic could not hear us even though we were in the room.)
For millenials: it's just discord for ham radios, and the internet connection happens on either your repeater or gateway (if you don't have a repeater nearby you can build one). Not really that complicated. Your callsign is your username.
Hello Matt! Hi everybody! Im Pavlo from Madrid! Thank You for this video! It was usefull for me! Am just starting with this, and I like the idea to have an interesting alternatives ways of communications, which in some ways surpass the usual one. Best regards!
My summary of how to get started using System Fusion as a user. 1) Quit my job. 2) Sell my house. 3) Move to an area that has a System Fusion repeater. This sounds cool, but I don't have a single YSF repeater anywhere near me. I guess that I won't be buying and Yaesu digital radios anytime soon. Funny that my city is in the list of top 50 largest cities in the US -- it isn't like I live in the middle of nowhere.
@@m6ceb : I hope you are right. I am a bit of a Yaesu fanboy... Personally, I will buy the radio made by the big three that can decode all popular digital modes. There is no technical reason they can't do it. However, I just can't seem to make myself buy a "direct conversion" cheapo radio.
You can access wires-x through a hotspot, I have a dvmega/rpi hotspot running pi-star I made and used a ftm-100 and ft-70 with the hotspot and had full access to wires-x network
Things have changed and there are options - even without a repeater in town, an FTM100, FTM400, FT2D or FT3D radio with a WIRES-X cable (additional purchase) can be connected to a laptop or PC into the Yaesu Wires-X system. Some nice features in WIRES-X and lots of rooms (nodes) to talk on, apparently much better than the previous WIRES system. Another option: transmit to a hotspot in Fusion mode and talk on the FCS and YSF alternate networks (not part of the WIRE-X system). The Yaesu Fusion radio w/hotspot cross modes into DMR, P25 and NXDN, only not D-STAR. Same can be done with a DMR radio with a bit more work. If you even leave the home area there probably will be a Fusion repeater somewhere to use the radio. Unofficially, basic on-line research shows in North America there appears to be over 1,800 Fusion Repeaters listed online, nearly 1,680 DMR and 1,180 DSTAR. Worldwide looks like 500 more DMR than Fusion Repeaters.
Thank You Matt, I have been using D-Star for a while and though it would be complicated to learn to use another Internet based system but you demystified it for me 73 DE W8REN
Matt not sure if you are aware on the ftm100 possible the ftm400 when you power up hold the dx and GM button both in, you will be able use the none digital rooms or any other, not just digital only all via just the scu20 cable all thanks to the firmware update
Hello Matt: Great video! With the FTM-400DR connected to a PC Computer, Am I able to send a receive text messages threw the FTM-400DR using a bi-directional i-Gate? Also see locations of other stations without internet on a monitor? Thanks, Bob 8P6RC
Hi Matt, I am a new HAM and have bought a Yaseu FT-70Dr. If I get a FT-100 as a node to get on the internet, do I actually need the HRI-200? I just want to connect my FT-70 to the internet and chat around the world, (maybe with you). I am not looking to create my own room or host a room.
You really could do with a hri 200 as you won't hear analogue stations coming through the system.im not an expert but I'm quite sure try searching for the north west fusion group on Facebook there very knowledgeable on there and mention my video. Congratulations on your license it's a great hobby 👍😁
I use an FTM 100 for both direct mode at home and switch to node mode when I go away from the house. I use an FT3D to connect back using wires x and I can talk anywhere in the world as long as I am in range to my FTM 100. From my location I can get around 10-15 miles away from the house with my handheld.
I've watched endless videos, skimmed manuals, but can't seem to find an answer to what seems like a simple question. My son is going to Hawaii with an ft-70d and has access to a C4fm repeaters. There are no C4fm repeaters in my area. What is the cheapest way on my end so that we can talk *direct* (not in a room)? Mu understanding (which may be wrong) is that I need to be a node/pdn, so even though an Ft70dr has a dp-id, a Hotspot wouldn't cut it, and I'd have to use something like an ft-3dr and cable to the computer, is this correct or not? I am on a fixed income so I need to get this right the first time. Thank you so much for your help!
Hi, you mentioned on another vid that the North West Fusion Group offered list downloads for the FTM400... do you know where abouts on the website the downloads can be accessed? Also, do you know if it covers other areas or just the North West? Many thanks
hi mate so what i can gather from ur info if i buy a ft3d or a ft 300d and the relivent smu cable for the pc register with yeasu download the software put radio into direct mode and connect to the rooms throgh my computer and it will transmit through the internet sorry for the long comment cheers kenny mm3 ptj
Hello, and thank you for the video which is very interesting. It allowed me to better understand the use of C4FM even if I don't understand English too much! hi hi hi I have a question. If I have a HRI200 and an FTM100 in hotspot at home and I want to call a friend who is also equipped, how should I do with my second ftm100? Thanks in advance and 73's F4 @ EKS Jerome
I’m very new to digital modes My question is if I’m close enough to a fusion repeater can the radio connect t to it with out the use of a computer. Like a regular hand help on 2m or whatever band
