@herbbowler2461
@herbbowler2461 7 месяцев назад
@@jamest1103 That is BS . We can convert or manufacture all of them. The most absorbable B12 is manufactured by bacteria in the gut. ALA is easily converted into the rest of the EFAs as needed. Or sun exposure can replace EFAs . As for heme iron. Where did the cow or the pig or any other animal you eat get it ? They are plant eaters ????? Minerals are not manufactured by any animal. They come the soil and are extracted from the soil by plants. Animals get minerals originally from plants. Or from drinking water. So again there are no nutrients not abundantly available on a plant diet. But the list of deficiencies on just meat are so numerous that the sustainability on 100% carnivore is far less than 1 year. Yet there are many vegans that have maintained a vegan diet over 100 years!

@@jamest1103 Sorry. I missed retinol. Retinal is vitamin A. All herbivore animals. Including humans are made to convert beta carotenes into vitamin A. A quality many carnivores don't have. I have read different opinions that the absortion of plant-based proteins is significantely lower than of animal-based. You mention that you will cover this on a future video, but I haven't seen a part III. Did I miss this reference in one of your other videos? My curiosity comes from having had two serious tendon injuries in the past year after following a plant-based for two years now.. wonder if there is a relation given the importance for proper protein absortion in order to heal tendons after exercise. There was no obvious movement that led to the injuries, just came up slowly (medial epicondylitis and supraspinatus). These are normal injuries in climbers, but I have climbed for 10 years and have never had a non-trauma related injury before. Thank you in advance Diogo

Proteins are not equally bioavailable and are ranked. Plant protein is ranked far lower than plant powders or meat products. You'll Eat your RDA but if it's only available at 50% then you're not really GETTING the nutritional values. *DIAAS is the ranking system
@mitkoogrozev
@mitkoogrozev 2 года назад
DIASS is irrelevant if you eat variety of foods and and for some if they're cooked. It might be relevant if you're gonna eat only one food (lets say only rice) an nothing else your entire life, which is very unrealistic. A lot of their scores comes from feeding pigs raw ingredients (like beans, and no human eats raw beans), but when cooked the differences disappear. Also if there's any grain or potatoes with your protein source the absorbability jumps to 90-100%. Basically studies that make real life comparisons find no difference.

Refreshing and inspiring 👍. Thankyou. As you are focussing on protein, here is one question (set of questions on protein) I have yet to answer is how much protein do I really need when working out each day? Does muscle repair/rebuild primarily occur during sleep (and naps)? When is best time to eat in relation to workout and amino acid absorption? How much protein can my body store assuming that repair/rebuild takes hours and days? How much can I absorb? They are all interrelated questions, e.g. one thing I do know is that after training to failure I do need a couple of days and nights of sleep to recover 😉 no study evidence required there.

I think it's the per meal threshold that people speak of not per day. Also your body burns some of that protein off as fuel. Also, fat is more calorically dense then protein/carbs. So if someone need more protein then another person they would need to eat a high volume of food thereby increase calories astronomically if getting protein from nuts instead of something like egg whites or fat free milk or chicken.

To have a really good comparison of the muscle building properties of meat vs plants you would have to do an experiment with the same athlete. No doubt they have great genetics and can thrive on a plant based diet but that doesn't automatically mean it's optimal.

As a lifelong vegetarian, I agree with most of what you say but good luck trying to get enough protein for athletics/muscle building if there is not some animal protein in your diet, or consumption of protein supplements to recommended (governing bodies) amounts. What you are missing from the examples at the end is that these guys eat a LOT of food daily outside of normalcy. Without eggs or dairy, or protein supplements it is fairly hard for the average person to have an intake of, say, 130 grams of protein/daily on a regular basis only eating plant foods. It is very hard unless one is consuming food all the time. But for general daily minimal amounts, I agree.

PS: A grammar error: “algae” is the plural form of “alga”, therefore “is an algae” is grammatically incorrect.

You forgot to mention bio availability of plant proteins. DIAAS is a measure of the bio availability of various protein sources. Most meat and dairy products have 100% bio availability. Chickpeas have 72% bioavailability, black beans 65% tofu(non gmo without roundup pesticide residues) 54%, pea isolate 82% etc.

Don't plants have significantly lower DIAAS scores though I think this is a point your glossing over, which is why the go to protein source for strength athletes, bodybuilders (people trying to put on a lot of muscle) is heavily animal based.
@NutritionMadeSimple

many plant sources have lower DIAAS (albeit not all) but DIAAS has many shortcomings. at the end of the day we want to know the effect of dietary patterns not isolated foods. both animal and plant sources are effective for anabolism if protein and leucine is matched. we've been working on a video covering this for a long time, we'll get it done eventually :)

All the things you talk about in this video are clear and useful but I've a question about the % of protein. If the food A has 10 gr. of proteins and the food B has 15 gr. of proteins, and they can perfectly combine each other thanks to the amino acids, how many gr. of higly biological value of proteins will I have for my meal? 25? 12,50?

How does our body use and utilise these proteins to make muscle? if they contain some protein uptake inhibitors or anti nutrients within them selves which prevent absorption. Such as amino glycosides, phytic acid oxalic acid and minerals like zinc, do the proteins break down into amino acids and then into glucose/sugars when these elements are present? Can you mix and match animal based and plant based to make more whole proteins? Such as eggs, meat, milks and whey protein powders eaten with plant based protein powders and whole food products such as nuts, peas, beans and seeds?

If You could make some fact checking on this topic, and maybe point out the best foods to boost testosterone, then I would very much appreciate.

What I find is, that lean meats like chicken or turkey have a very nice ratio of calories - protein meaning I get almost pure protein for a relative bearable taste, compared to tofu. I can consume that chicken with almost zero carbs/fat on a regular basis which I don#t find to be the case with comparable plant protein isolates

@@NutritionMadeSimple Thanks for the reply! I watched the video then went down a bit of a rabbit hole regarding reading the study you touched on regarding protein absorption (specifically "Dietary Protein and Amino Acids in Vegetarian Diets-A Review" by Mariotti and Gardner) and some of the references to those studies. It seems there is a big gap between conventionally accepted measures of dietary protein quality in humans (frameworks like PDCAAS and DIAAS) which rate whole plant protein quality as being on the order of 10-40% less than animal sources and the measures mentioned by Mariotti and Gardner which indicate that the difference is much more minor, something on the order of 1-5% inferior in terms of quality. It seems that Mariotti and Gardner suggested that the PDCAAS and DIAAS were mostly based on analysis of rat digestion of the sources and the limited data available on humans themselves were much more favourable for plant protein. They also noted that the plant proteins that scored 1-5% below animal proteins in the human studies were also in a quite "raw" form, in terms of lack of cooking, and that cooking may alleviate the difference entirely. That being said, when I looked at the studies to back this up, they seemed to be testing a lot of protein isolates, not whole foods, which confused me. What is being proposed by Mariotti and Gardner and their references (as I understood it) would be quite a shift from the conventional understanding that animal protein is of significantly higher quality for humans compared to plant protein. This is of interest to me since I am quite active and would like to have an idea of whether or not there is a significant difference between the protein amounts that I put in my mouth versus the amino acid amounts that actually enter my bloodstream if I'm eating whole plants. Do you have any comments on what I wrote (would you generally agree with what I understood from the paper)?
@Hotshot90909
@Hotshot90909 4 года назад
Also, I should say that when I say quality, I am referring to the actual injestion component, not the relative amounts of the amino acids (which as I understand it is accounted for in PDCAAS and DIAAS which may partially answer my question)
@NutritionMadeSimple
@NutritionMadeSimple 4 года назад
@@Hotshot90909 good sleuthing. in addition to the ones you mentioned, the main misunderstanding seems to be that classical studies look at isolated foods (e.g. egg vs rice). this makes sense experimentally but it's not how we eat. when we look at entire dietary patterns over the course of a day or 2 the differences (e.g. amino acid 'completeness') go away (fig 1 of this paper gives a powerful visual: academic.oup.com/nutritionreviews/article/77/4/197/5307079#.XK0fvVXgKR8.email). now for very specific activities like bodybuilding for example there may or may not need to be other 'tricks' involved (there are plant-based bodybuilders but I don't know enough about their diet details, supplements etc), but for 'normal' citizens I doubt there is a meaningful difference, as long as one is having a varied diet, with enough calories and rich in whole foods. at least I haven't seen convincing evidence of one. if you're unsure, 1 thing you can do is transition gradually so you can track your 'performance' as you change. gradual transition may be a better method anyway
