PSA: with the rework of prowler's, this is no longer a must-buy for Pyke. Currently the new Youmuu's is his mythic of choice with fantastic synergy and stats for Pyke. Either youmuu's -> umbral or vice versa. Then Axiom arc unless edge of night looks valuable for its shield. Personally not the biggest fan of the new duskblade or prowler's. There is more of an argument for ingenious hunter too, since umbral's cooldown got increased so item haste will have more value + scaling youmuu's active. Especially because you get movespeed passively from new youmuu's, there is less pressure to go mobi's or relentless hunter now.
first pyke world is playing eclipse with a "bruiser" setup (maw, dd) so he can proc multiple shields and gain huge skimishing value. What do you think of that choice ?
The Prowler's Claw update really broke my heart for Pyke. The E -> Flash -> P. Claw combo would always catch enemies that think they're safe. My life has not been the same since 😫
Obviously, as a hardcore Pyke OTP i didnt learn much but can definitely say the guide is really well done. Definitely would be a great watch for anyone starting out on Pyke.
Let’s Goooo! Thanks for hooking us up with the guide Cupcake! I’ve recently decided to add Pyke to my main champ pool and have been having a ton of fun with him.
so glad you made this. I feel I always struggle playing against pyke, and ban him every match im supporting. Knowing what a pyke will do with such in depth understanding will take him off my ban list
Thank you Coach Cupcake, this is simply the best Guide for Pyke that we all need. Simple, understandable and absolutely funny to follow, its an hour and 30 minutes but it was like 10 minutes, GG.
The E + channel Q + flash + release Q is a gamechanger that I didn't know about. Huge props to that, and to the rest of the guide. Helped my macro game a ton
One thing this video taught me that I'm trying to relax on now is the discipline he describes with using W for 'useful' reasons. If you watch a Pyke player, they often use their w to shoot into the enemy's face making q very easy to land. Pyke's ability to close so much distance and effectively cheese unsuspected victims with very hard to dodge close ranged hooks for me is a large part of what completely sets him apart from blitz or thresh. ANOTHER THING I picked up from this video is the e flash walk behind q lvl 2 combo. I'm using that every game I get the chance and its doing work.
very well done video, covers everything that's relevant in a well structured format, yet is as concise as it can be for the ground it covers. now all you need to master pyke is experience and practice, enjoy.
Thank you so much bro, I think u did it really well, bcz the way you’re saying about those things I like a lot. It was helpful for a pyke Mainers. So yeah, ty for your job ❤
You can also hook players with your Q over the wall if they are close to it. so you can combo that in to a Q hook over the wall and then R. or you can stun them with E to get over the wall then blindly hook them and finally execute with R.
I *love* that you started with matchups and not 'fluff' like abilities or runes, which can be found anywhere. I also love how concise-yet-comprehensive your matchup section was. And more impressively, when you did get to the ability section, you wen truly in-depth, with tons of examples in the practice tool, complete with ability-icons. Thanks so much for this valuable guide. (P.S. I feel a video this good needs a more 'clickable' title and thumbnail. It'd be a shame for people to miss it because those two items don't compete strongly enough with other YT vids.)
ima chall supp and play all of the hook champs a lot besides pyke cuz im not comfortable on him. this vid helped me understand his champ identity well and im gonna practice him, thx for the good content
For runes: I usually go Ingenious Hunter on Pyke (+ Cosmic) over Ultimate and Relentless, as it synergizes extremely well with Umbral Glaive and Sweeper. Bonus points for Prowler's Claw, Youmuu's, Edge, GA, Maw, Silvermere as well. I usually build Prowlers and Umbral, so Ingenious lets me maximize vision control and giving me more pick potential with reduced Prowler cd. I usually pair this with Inspiration secondary, using Cosmic Insight + another option (usually Stopwatch or Biscuit, although I do want to experiment with Market to test with item spikes). I have also seen some experienced Pykes go Treasure Hunter for increased snowballing power. I also want to correct you on 15:18, Lucidity Boots do not give item haste, only standard Haste and summoner Haste. Only Cosmic and Ingenious provide item Haste, which is why I run both of them. For combos: You can also cancel your Q channel with E or R, not just W. Useful if a quick dash is needed over a speed boost, or if your teammates nuked someone under threshold outside of your expectations. Another W trick when roaming to mid is that you can use it to travel over an enemy Scuttle or known enemy Stealth ward to trick the opponent into thinking they're safe. Mostly helpful if the enemy mid is generally immobile and relies on that vision for safety. Overall, love the video! I'm mostly a Thresh-Pyke player with some Renata, but I still learned a lot!
I'm currently testing out Fleet Footwork in my games on Pyke against really beefy enemy team comps, particularly into supports that can function well as Wardens (Thresh, Nautilus, Taric, Tahm Kench, Braum). I always rush Eclipse and run Fleet Footwork - Triumph - Tenacity - Cut Down, with secondary resolve Second Wind - Revitalize, and AD + Health shards to make Fleet scale as well as possible. I take pretty much any trades possible bot lane, and wait for second wind's missing HP to trigger before regenerating my gray health: almost any trade ends up in my favor due to the regeneration this build provides. In-lane I basically play a "war of attrition" like an enchanter, forcing the enemy out of lane via sustain, then using Pyke's tempo to roam and join skirmishes. I typically go Spectral Sickle to supplement this playstyle with gold + allow me to sustain mana as well, but Shoulderguards will stack Tenacity faster and can secure push where I might not have otherwise due to a rough ADC matchup. This build really seems to shine during midgame, since you can absorb insane punishment in skirmishes without dying due to Eclipse's shield and Fleet's insane Bonus AD scaling, both amped with Revitalize. You can then retreat and regen with Gray Health, Second Wind, and Triumph. Cut Down and Tenacity also help you shred tanks while surviving their CC. The playstyle is a bit of a departure from Pyke's ideal conditions (high lane kill threat, quick and messy skirmishes, picking squishy enemies) but it seems like a really useful option to have in Pyke's toolbox, and I'd love to hear your experience if you try it. Side note: If I can't hit the enemy tower and don't want to recall, but I'm too low HP to easily roam, I'll often attack drake or monster camps for the full Fleet Footwork healing then use W to avoid aggro.
I know this is of limited value because I am commenting on a video more than a year old, and you may do this in future videos, but when you talk about a rune or an item leave you mouse over the object you are talking about. This lets the viewer read it possibly multiple times as you speak. This is helpful for learning but also helps keeps your video relevant as patches change things. What I love about your videos is they talk about the theory about why you make choices. That makes it really helpful even after something (rune/items etc.) has changed as I can apply the theory to the new state of the game.
I've found Predator to be a solid option vs lanes you probably won't snowball against (i.e. Milio Ezreal, Sona Heimer). I take Minion Dematerializers to help supplement the keystone by forcing roam timers, and Cosmic Insight to reduce Predator's cooldown. Predator's indicator is the same range as his W indicator (1500), and it allows you to take Ultimate Hunter (since Predator has such a large range that it helps with tempo). A lot of players will panic when they see you GAINING DISTANCE while charging hook with Predator active, so just being patient will often force a flash + you will still be able to hook them after. If the enemy has low mobility, it can instead make your E stun basically guaranteed. You sacrifice a lot of lane dominance so I find it situational, but it really helps his identity as a Playmaker imo. Enemies are forced to respect you at all times while you aren't visible on the map, for fear that you'll dash over a wall and start charging hook while running at them with 400+ ms.
I like the creativity :) I find pivoting away from lane dominance on Pyke is almost always a huge cost and you can snowball regardless, but if it works in your games more power to you. Thanks for sharing
Wow awesome guide thx coach. I need to try pyke and come back to SoS. I tryed to stop LoL but you wont let me be at peace ? Love your content man. Also with such a handsome mustache you need to do a Braum guide.
You described Glacial's perks, but not necessarily under what conditions it would be optimal. Maybe you are saying its just a preference thing. Maybe I'm in a lane with Draven or something and I don't need the extra damage. Lovely guide Cupcake, cheers.
I don’t think it’s ever optimal, the training wheel analogy applies here. You can use that build path to build confidence initially. Thanks for watching :)
I don't want to go to detention so I will refrain from making the arcane comet jokes 👍 good guide tho coach maybe next preseason ill try to pick up pyke
Honestly I was thinking about that after I edited the video already. Although it makes your level 2 spike trickier with no execute, I can see it being useful too. I should've mentioned it, although I haven't tried it myself.
Hello Coach Cupcake, I just wanted to ask your thoughts on taking Arcane Comet as your keystone on Pyke? I have reliable information from a multi-challenger former pro that it is sometimes an angle you can go for. I would appreciate any elucidation you can offer on this trying subject. All the best - Mr Stickman.
Thank you writing in Mr Stickman. If you could just wait in the detention room while I compile my thoughts on arcane comet I'll get back to you shortly.
really looking foward to the Braum one. Wardens deserve some love too lol Even though I only play Wild Rift, these guides have been helping me a lot. Thanks, coach
800k pyke main here, great video. you talked about about different builds and runes, do you think glacial/aftershock or evenshroud are on par with the standard HoB page w/ assassin items or more just a “bandaid” like you said? i remember i used to run aftershock a while back, and i kind of liked the prospect of more durability/utility on pyke. i might try it out in norms myself
Im a otp with 500k + PTS and I usualy go electrocute. My strat is playing with my friend who picks good all in champs, at level 2 instantly go e Flash into q and ignite/exaust if they are still level 1
It's going to depend on the situation, but in general it shouldn't be necessary most of the time. You can find a lead from first 2 levels to snowball, and unless heimer is diligent with holding a turret for the all in and holding e, you can still find windows. Or even on the ADC away from turrets, or using your f, or killing with jg.
New to pyke here and possibly a dumb question but would overgrowth be a good rune to run since it passively increases health (which instead obviously increases AP) wouldn’t it be better to run over zombie ward since permanent? Or perhaps run with zombie? I’m sure it’s a math thing that I’m overlooking or perhaps the rune doesn’t quite work with pyke because codes are hard has anyone tried this?
The return for HP to AD is not enough to warrant doing anything with HP for Pyke unfortunately. Also you’re not around minions enough to get any real type of value from that rune.
Quite a good guide, I just find impossible to play against a good Rakan atm, that's my must ban champ when playing Pyke since all my poke damage is nonexistent against his shields so I lose all the trades xD
Laning against rakan I do the following: intimidate him to the point that he starts the engage with his W (knockup dash), and then dodge it with E to stun him.
@@AMKpolka5 the problem is that he and his adc will still be full health, you can do this to allow your adc to poke tho, but he needs to have a brain and not all in xD
Don't get me wrong Rakan is strong, the last couple of months actually i play both pyke/rakan because they both share this energetic engage playstyle. I guess pyke is better if you are last picks in champion select and rakan a safe first pick.
I'm just gonna start maining this bald champ and just a question.... can This champ run a split push build as a support pyke with teleport from silver to gold? Or I'ma be a total troll
Pyke already has a lot of mobility in his kit, so it doesn't "unlock" the champion as it does with thresh/leona/ali etc. Although given there isn't anything necessary in the rest of the branch, it can be worth playing around with!
hey thx for the guide, very informative, out of topic a technical feedback : your mic has definitly a problem /or you don't understund/use correctly his directivity. a large diaphragm microphone should not sound like this.
oh wait, never mind, it's just maybe one of those USB mic that look like a large diaphragm microphone but are just a piece of sh... nevermind, manufacturer just want things looking good i guess. best for a mic to sound good imho but i got it.
Nah you have a point, I did buy a pop filter after this video, there were some audio pops that would have sounded jarring in this. Mic quality should be decent with yeti mic but I'm sure I'll upgrade eventually!
@@CoachCupcake pop filter good for "explosive" that you don't have in this video, i talk about you loosing frequency time to time, u go from full spectrum to "phone sound", this come from 1 directivity you move out of, 2 your diaphragm is damaged. sry english not my native language i don't have the technical vocabulary to explain better. but imho i don't get why Streamer always pick wrong mic type, should fefinitly look at something like shotgun mic, perfect to get voice, at any range, and avoid all keyboard sound and stuff around
shotgun mic you don't have to put it "in your mouth", like... i mean you don't sing or radio, shotgun you put it on stand just above your head, don"t have to worry about it, don't have to think about it, better voice sound, same price range, easy peasy lemon squizy :)
sry don't wnat spam you :D but again about pop filter, they are good if the mic is like btw 1 and 10cm, the the "wind" or high pressure from explosive talk push the diaphragm to strong (= pop), this is NOT the case here. and finaly the + from shotgun is, again, you don't have to worry about distance, about the mic being in your face, btw you and the screen / your keybord, shotgun mic usually above. /spam off :)
A few games ago our Team was smashed by a Pike, he had around 30 Kills, 4 Deads and 40 Assists, so i took all my essences and bought him but i didnt knew how i should play him so i went to aggresive, missed my ult, died for 20 times, was underleveld af and the half of the time, i run around the map and didnt knwo what to do with all my abilitys, so early game was ok but after... but know hopefully i wont smash my IKEA Table anymore.
@@CoachCupcake now im so bored of winning my lane hard amd lopsing tje game that i only play pyke for warmup or when i need an easy nrainless but shit fun game lol
Sadly right now I think Pyke is on the weaker side. The amount of counter play in his entire kit and passive holds him back. Especially in the anti snowball changes they made
Weakest support ngl. His kit is really bad, his Q is the hardest hook to hit, his E is too comittal, his R has a really small hitbox, idk...Great visual design, awful skills, feels completely useless.
