Just performed this same job on daughter's Sorento 2.4 due to a startup rattle. Replaced chains and tensioners along with pulleys and belt. Whole job was pretty straightforward and went without a hitch. Initially it seemed to quite it down, but five days later I noticed the rattle again. Any ideas what else might be causing this rattle? It's not a deep frequency knock like a rod bearing knock, and it goes away quickly when oil pressure builds. Engine is very quiet after that. 113k miles, very well maintained by me, very clean inside, premium synthetic oil. Any ideas welcome.
Sometimes is can be the variable cam gear on the camshaft that when they start to fail they bleed down and you get the second or two rattle. I have videos on Hondas that have that problem.
@@Motorcarnut thanks, yeah was thinking it has something to do with that. The kit I bought had the upper cam gears but those were the only pieces I did not replace since did not see excessive wear on teeth. Will research replacement of these gears. Thank you for reply.

There's no way possible I could do something like this myself I just watched the video to get some kinda idea what my mechanic friend will be going through when he changes the chain on my 2007 sonata. A question. My local autozone has the chain kits for over $400, I find a kit on amazon for a mere $48.59. I can't imagine a price difference that big unless the new one is garbage. Am I better off staying away from the one from amazon?

I'm asking because my friend, who is a self trained mechanic and is very good in what he does and hasnt failed me yet in a lot of jobs, offered him $200 and he gladly accepted. ON another hand I'm told if I had it done at a garage with brand name parts I could have $1500 or more in the job
Me too, I have a Kia sorento, how did you get on. My sorento has started making a knocking sound, think it's possibly rod bearing issue however found little plastic bits in the oil sump Which looks like from a tensioner. So expecting to find damage, good luck
@@cabreallsiams9277 actually ended up getting really lucky. I started under the hood and noticed new/ non factory looking rtv squeezed out from the timing cover and the cover was much cleaner than the rest of the motor. I bought the car in June with 100k on it and my guess is the chain had been replaced fairly recently. I let the engine run and listened and it actually ended up being one of the alternator bolts had completely backed out and up against the frame and the other loose. And that was causing the rattle at idle and low rpm. Zipped them back in and problem went away.

I have a question tho..there is 2 lines go to the cabin from the water pump,I believe it's for the cabin heating and it's return,I had to disconnect it,and it was pressurized antifreeze in itonce I'm done with the timing part,and start assembly,do I have to do anything with it,or just connect it back and it will pressurize itself? No problem and thanks for the feedback. Just reconnect them and when the coolant gets hot it will circulate through the heater core and everything will be find as soon as you feel heat inside the vehicle.

Currently doing a diagnostic on a 15 Kia Optima 2.4L there’s a weird rattling/tapping sound coming from timing cover area. Took the valve cover off and noticed a lot of slack on the timing chain. Haven’t taken the timing cover off yet but will be doing so soon thanks to your video. Any idea what could be causing that obnoxious noise? Bad guides, tensioner, sprockets?
Im in the process of doing the timing chain on a 09 hyundai sonata 2.4L and your video was very helpful, but my oil pump doesn't have the mark to the left of the sprocket, how do i line up oil pump without that?

Can I ask a stupid question, at 2:20 you remove a bracket, I'm following your steps on my driveway, do I need to support the engine? I.e. will the engine drop if I remove this bracket. Thanks in advance
