This was a long project that was filmed over a couple months. I couldn't include all footage because I lost a few clips. I purchased this trailer for $500 in hopes to restore it. I was able to remove the rust and prime/paint the trailer, I added 3/4in expanded mesh, added wheel fenders, added lighting brackets and wiring for the light system, new couple, new trailer jack, new safety cables. Removed the old decking and replaced it with new stained wood. What a project! If you want to purchase anything I used in this project, I included some Amazon affiliate links below:
Dual Hitch: Curt Multi-Use Trailer Hitch Ball Mount with Extra 2-Inch Receiver:
amzn.to/30UcEHX
Pair of Square Trailer Fenders (14"-16" Wheels)
amzn.to/2BoMGl1
Red Hound Auto 2 Weld on Butterfly Hinges for gate
amzn.to/2AFJzpb
WorldPac 1/2" Spring Pin Latch Lock Assembly for Utility Trailer
amzn.to/2Cl6KW8
Blazer Trailer Light Kit

Curt Trailer Safety Cables

Curt 2 Inch Ball Trailer Coupler

Music: Dan Henig 'Flames' from RU-vid Music library for RU-vid videos
Please take special care in working on your own trailer. Certain skills and safety steps need to be taken. I am not responsible for any of your decisions or mistakes. Thanks for watching and have a great day!

Great video. Where is the best place to purchase expanded metal mesh? Is it something we can purchase at home depot I can only find small pieces I need atleast...... 4'×8' pieces. And what was the cost of the expanded metal for this project. Great restoration work! awesome video.

The trailer turned out awesome. The memory that your daughter will carry, is priceless. As the years go by, and you use that trailer, your daughter will always remember helping her Dad fix that thing up. Good stuff

Nice job! I purchased my 5 x 10 trailer used and the previous owner had put a tent trailer stabilizer leg at the back so that when the trailer is not connected to a vehicle you can safely walk on with equipment without it tipping backwards. Works awesome!

An easy trick I like doing to protect the wires is to use an old garden hose, first fun a wire through the length you want through the hose then tape off your new wires to one end, pull them through and mount then your wires are protected, nice job on your trailer

You did a good job! I think your gonna wish you made your tailgate about 2ft longer though. It appears way to steep as is
@Jasonoid

You're right, It's pretty steep! Surprisingly it hasn't been a problem. Still can get my tiller, snowblower and 4wheeler up on it without any issues.
@davidstill754
@davidstill754 2 года назад
@@Jasonoid of course you can. I'm just saying pushing any of those items would have been much easier without such a steep angle. Trying to dolly furniture or basically anything becomes more of a job. You did a job on your trailer, just saying if the tailgate wasn't at such a steep angle than loading anything becomes easier and the easier it is the better it is. Imo Of course you can always raise the tounge up higher if need be
@Jasonoid

Thanks David, that's true, easier is better. I will think about that next time I build one of these tailgates!

I liked everything besides the wood. Wood looks great but doesn't last. Shouldve gotten yourself some 4x8 galvanized 16 gauge metal and reinforce your pre existent tubing. Also if you're getting rid of the rust you should've cleaned up the axle. Besides that nice job.
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 3 года назад
I live in a desert so wood won't rot if treated and stored properly. Sheet metal would have been much more expensive and added lots of additional weight. I'm sure there are some cases it's better but just not for my exact case. Thanks for watching and sharing your input!

Good work. How is everything holding up? Putting the mesh on the bottom of the tongue framing would have given you a built in tray to store things in. Also making the joint tight between the gate and deck sides helps a lot when using a trailer for dump runs.

Shame these trailer makers do not paint the metal parts of the trailers you cannot see. If they would put a good paint on them. When the boards needed to be replace. The metal underneath would not be in such bad shape. If I buy another. I may remove the boards, and paint the metal. Then put it back together!
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 2 года назад
You're right! They last much longer with paint on the whole trailer. Luckily I live in a dry climate so we don't get quite as much rust here

@@Jasonoid I've got a 5x10 trailer . Have the boards removed. Will start on the rust removal soon. I'm in a hot humid climate. Metal has a lot of scaly rust. But still seems sound enough. I was in the Navy. We used Needle guns to remove scaly rust build up. I have one.

I realize this is an older video, but I have to say you've done an amazing refurbishing project. The only thing I would suggest is, every hole you drilled through metals needs a grommet to protect the wires. The metal edges of the holes will eventually cut through the wire insulation and short out the light circuits. Other than that very nice... Thumbs Up!

What treatment did you use on the wood? You mentioned stain and a sealer?
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 3 года назад
It was an oil based "redwood" colored stain & sealer from home depot. It has really held up well. Still looks brand new. I can't remember the brand though, I will look around and let you know if I find the container in my storage.
