The Complete Tremolo Tutorial for Beginner & Intermediate Students. In this video I show 3 different trémolos: 1) the classical trémolo (4-note), 2) the flamenco trémolo (5-note), and 3) a popular 3-note trémolo.
This video is intended for beginner to intermediate students. All demonstrations break down the fundamental components and correct movements of this technique. I also included several exercises and practice strategies to help you improve correctly. Even though the exercises and demonstrations in this video are limited to the classical tremolo, you should also practice them using the flamenco tremolo and the three-note tremolo.
IMPORTANT: It is imperative that you work on this technique very slowly. Your initial goals should be to play this with minimal physical effort, relaxation, precision, and a good tone. Never push your tempo too soon. If you feel tense or make several mistakes, you need to reduce your tempo to correct your mistakes right away. Going too fast too soon could result in diminishing returns and injury.

We need as much tremolo tutorials as possible without being too much haha.. I been thinking about this for a while. You say the relax the fingers after hitting it legato or non staccato, but at 13:40 and all other times throughout performance you're curling your fingers into a fist right before getting back to P finger. Surely when doing it fast that would be a good case, even slow cause your hands feel and look relaxed at that point. You could right? drop the finger after every stroke when playing fast, or would that be harder? Idk if you get me, but please more tremolo haha :D
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic Год назад
Thanks for comment! Yes, at the slow tempo. I’m keeping my fingers up a little bit more than I would add a faster temple. If you take a look at around 19:10, that’s more similar to what it would be like at full speed. In any case, what I try to do at fast tempos is focus on keeping my fingers relaxed rather than actively think about dropping each finger after every stroke. As long as you keep your hands and fingers loose and light, you’ll get a good tone. I hope this helps!

@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic Год назад
If you are just starting out I would recommend starting with the easiest one and progressively increasing difficulty. It’s not necessary to practice all of these exercises one after another or even every day. I would recommend no more than 2-2.5 very focused minutes on any exercise with the tremolo on the 1st string and another 2-2.5 minutes on any exercise with the tremolo on either strings 2 or 3. After that, practice, at least two other techniques before repeating your Tremolo exercises only one more time. I hope this helps!

@DiegoAlonsoMusic

Hi! Sorry, I don’t think I completely understand your question. Most of the time of the trémolo technique starts with the thumb (e.g. piami, pami, pmi) although there are context-specific exceptions when starting the trémolo (e.g., iamip, amip). I hope this helps!

is there a reason why p-a-m-i (p-m-i) is prefered to p-i-m-a (p-i-m) ? or is it personal preference and both work equally well?
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic 8 месяцев назад
Great question! p-a-m-i or p-m-i (p-i-a-m-i as well) are the most common ways of playing trémolo for the large majority of people. These common finger orders seem to be naturally comfortable for most. You can certainly switch the finger order but it may not be as comfortable or as fast. Or…it may be just fine for you. I recommend starting with the more common finger order and comparing it to the other option. I hope this helps! Thanks for your comment!
@m.i.v.
@m.i.v. 8 месяцев назад
@@DiegoAlonsoMusic thank you for the answer! :) I indeed normally play p-i-m, maybe because that's more common for me after playing arpeggios where I would pick the strings most often in that order. It works well for me I would say - the malaguena part you played in the beginning of the video - I am able to play it at comparable speed with p-i-m, I also play/practice asturias in that pattern. I play triplets mostly, so I rarely get to use my ringfinger, but I just now realised, that I actually do play p-a-m-i in that case - and as you said, it does feel more comfortable and faster too (than p-i-m-a) :)

* ̈ ̈*:•.Wonderful•:* ̈ ̈*:•.GREAT.•:* ̈ ̈*:•.ARTIST.•:* ̈ ̈*:•. Here is something interesting. Practice on one string. You switch between index and middle finger. But what do you do when the note value changes (e.g. quarter and eighth notes)? Do you still play index and middle finger constantly in alternation? Or does the index play the downbeat and the middle finger the upbeat. Thanks for support. Best Regards

Thanks for your comment! In general, for I & M, you should alternate fingers. Some exceptions are when you have a slur, a particularly long note, or to avoid an inverted string cross.

@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic 8 месяцев назад
Hi! Thanks for your comment and question. The challenge you’re experiencing is very common. But don’t worry, there’s definitely a solution! One strategy that I find very helpful is to practice alternating between staccato and legato playing. Also, make sure that your wrist is not too flexed. Excessive flexion in the wrist is one of the main causes for the back of the nails hitting the adjacent strings. The last thing is just to be patient. Trémolo is a tricky technique that takes a while to develop. Try to be as consistent as possible in your practice rather than pushing yourself too hard. Always minimize tension and aim for your best sound. Hope this helps!

Something I'm finding crucial in getting tremelo down is having your nails properly shaped. If they are too rough, too long, or not angled correctly, it is next to impossible to make progress. There are a lot of videos on this, but I particularly like the explanation by Bradford Werner at the "This is Classical Guitar" channel. He also has a companion webpage detailing it. I've still got a long way to go with tremelo, but getting this right made a huge difference in my progress. Note - i tried posting this with links, but youtube doesn't seem to allow it. It should be easy enough to find though.

So I'm stuck at a certain speed which is frustrating. on the MI rope everything is going well. I reversed the situations PAMI, PIMA, PMIA, PMAI ect and I'm getting there but I can't progress because of this damn middle finger. Can you advise me . I know that practicing staccato can help me but are there other ways to solve this problem? thank you in advance for your help
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic Год назад
Hi! Try breaking down the finger order and change the position of M to isolate it a bit. For example, PAM, MIP, AMI. Play these evenly and then with varied rhythms and tempos.You should also practice free-stroke scales with I & M. Hitting adjacent strings is common. It will take some very focused trial and error to find a solution, but don’t worry, the solution is there!

Hi! I recommend that your nails be roughly 1-2 mm. in length past the finger tip on the playing side of your nails. They should not be too long or too short. For flamenco, they are definitely necessary. For classical, you can play with or without nails, but having nails will allow you to play with a wider range of tones. I hope this helps!

Thank you so much for commenting! PAMIM is unusual but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. If you are able to produce an even tremolo, without unnecessary tension, and PAMIM does not negatively affect your transition to other techniques, then I think it’s fine. I know plenty of high-level guitarists who use non-standard fingerings with no negative issues. Best of luck!

One problem. When i play tremolo, the melody played by the thumb always sounds way louder and drowns the tremolo part. When i try to pick harder the thumb also presses harder. Any tips?

I remember having the same issue when I started. What worked for me was to start by playing tremolo (including P) VERY slowly on only one string (1st or 2nd) and exaggerating the difference in volume for P compared to the trémolo fingers. P would be almost silent and the trémolo fingers almost too loud. Once this feels comfortable, start varying your tempo, volume, and strings. I recommend using a free stroke with P to really bring out the trémolo but it’s also good to practice rest strokes using the same strategies. Hope this helps!

I have the hardest time sitting with correct technique. I cannot sit with my legs crossed for over 5 min bc my back starts to hurt. Any tips?
@DiegoAlonsoMusic

Yes! I would not recommend sitting with your legs crossed. The sitting position is different for everyone. I cannot cross my legs easily so I use either a footstool or a guitar support. Paco de Lucia, later, in life, used a footstool all the time because he started having hip problems from crossing his legs too much. Personally, I prefer using a guitar support.

Thank you for your reply. can you if it's not too much to ask you give me the length of your fingers so that I can compare with the length of mine
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic Год назад
I’m happy to share but before I do, it’s very important to know that finger length really does not matter. And actually, fingers that are too long can be a hindrance. Consider the fact that there are virtuosic guitarists who are children. Similarly, there are plenty of female virtuosos out there who likely have smaller hands than most male virtuosos. There are also plenty of examples of male guitarists with long fingers (Miguel Angel Cortes, Vicente Amigo, Antonio Rey). Here’s me finger length: I=75mm, M=88mm, A=80mm, C=68mm, P=55mm.

Sir one question. Is it possible to learn all the flemenco technique from youtube ? I am a intermidiate of plectrum style but now i want to learn the flemenco .
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic Год назад
Hi! Yes, but you’ll only really get the very basics of each technique. To improve correctly you really need a progressive method that includes customized variations of each technique.

Is it okay if my right index, middle and ring finger have a long fingernail? I'm kind of worried if this could disrupt the tremolo technique while playing/plucking the string. And do I also have to practice the right pinky to play the tremolo as a beginner, or is it a personal option if you'd like to play with four fingers?
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic 2 месяца назад
Hello! Thank you so much for commenting. Personally, I prefer having fairly short fingernails, but I would recommend experimenting a little bit with your fingernail length. If you feel like the fingernails are catching on the string or producing an undesirable sound, try filing them little by little until you get a sound you like. You also want to make sure that your nail feels comfortable. As far as the pinky goes, it is not typical or recommended to use that finger for tremolos. That one is typically used for rasgueados. I hope this helps!

one more little thing. Are there any shorter pieces with tremolos because I train with Recuerdos de la Alhambra which I love
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic Год назад
Yes! There are two I really like and use for teaching: 1) Carcassi Op. 60, No 7 (arpeggio + trémolo), and 2) Sagreras Trémolo Etude No 4, Book 3.

Hi! Thank you so much for commenting. 🙏🏽 I would definitely recommend a legato sound. That said, practicing both staccato and legato are important. I hope this helps!

Good explanation 👍 in this tremolo technique if we play it "Pima " method rather than "Pami" or" piami" method is that wrong? Can you Plz explain it
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic 5 месяцев назад
Glad you liked it! The standard for the 4-note trémolo is PAMI only because that is a more natural finger order than PIMA for most people. That said, if you’re able to produce the same tone, speed, and rhythmic evenness with PIMA as what I’ve shown with PAMI, are able to stay very relaxed, and are able to easily transition to other techniques when needed, there’s no reason to say that PIMA is wrong for you. However, before deciding to practice trémolo with PIMA, I would very highly recommend working with an experienced teacher who can make sure that this is the best choice for you based on what he or she sees and hears. Feel free to reach out to me if you’d like a quick 30-min lesson. Hope this helps!

Diego, what if you do not have nails yet? What would be the optimal staging or planting of the fingers? At the tips before the nail to prepare when the nail finally grows there?
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic Год назад
Hi Lavek! It’s no problem if you don’t have nails right now. Even with nails you want to get used to planting your fingers just passed the nail (about 1 cm.). When you finally grow your nails out, you will want to play with both flesh and nail.
