The Ribeira (Portuguese for riverside) is the everyday name for the lower part of the historic old town of the Portuguese city of Porto, close to the Douro river bank. The quarter is part of the Freguesia São Nicolau (Porto) and thus belongs to the historic center of the city, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
The center of Ribeira is the Cais de Ribeira promenade, which connects the access to the Dom Luís bridge with the Praça da Ribeira. Here, numerous pubs, souvenir stores and restaurants line up. From the shore you can see the traditional port wine boats (barcos rabelos), the Douro and opposite it the sister city of Vila Nova de Gaia.
The part of the Ribeira behind the promenade consists of narrow, steep alleys and old houses, many of which, although some are now being extensively renovated, are structurally in poor condition and are more often empty except for the stores on the first floor.
