June I have seed updates posted on the project. Didn’t seem to have much affect but my back yard still gets a descent amount of sun.

I have a pretty good start of zenith zoysia from plugs would you recommend over seeding it to help it spread and fill in quicker?

You definitely could. You’ll have to be keep it watered like new seed and try to remove all the unwanted grass as well. Seed will definitely fill in an area quicker than plugs if you can get it started and keep it watered.

Never used them, mainly due to their cost. May use them on the ditch in my next renovation.

@@ZoysiaRUs whether using it does not interfere when aeration ? Do you think it's better to use or not?

@@riecautami8911 shouldn’t interfere with core aeration but could be aggravating when using a verticutter or dethatch rake. They use netting on sod so it’s pretty common and most people never have trouble with it. Better is relevant. If you don’t have irrigation, then it’s better. If you have a high probability of washout, then it’s better.

I think that's one of the best renovation series I've seen! most of us don't own or can't can get a hold of that type of equipment but it gives you a good idea of what needs to happen during a thorough renovation. I used a medium sized telehandler with a bucket for the majority of regrading, along with a tractor and a tiller and assortment of other makeshift attachments for a lawn mower. proper dirt work takes a long time but the preparation really shines through the finished product

I appreciate that! That’s true about most people not having the equipment. I was in the same boat a few years ago and I got tired of trying to find people to do what I wanted. I also offer the renovation process as a side business now so I get a lot of experience on the equipment. I agree, preparation is everything!

Nice vid! Im about to put Bermuda seeds down tomorrow. Do you think peat moss would speed up germination? I would only ahve 700 sq-ft to cover.

As far as a soil test goes, would I do this before or after I put a compost blend down? Would the compost mix change characteristics?

Good question. I would probably do either. I’m not a soil expert by any means but I would say it would change your soil test results some. In the grand scheme, you’re spreading 1/4” of compost over a 4-6” plug of native dirt. I would probably pull the test before the compost and amend the soil based on that. My goal with a soil test is to correct major deficiencies, which takes years.

Any generic starter will work. I used lesco brand that my local SiteOne stocks

I usually put it down same day. I just ran out of time on this one and put the seed down the following day.

If I chose to mix seed with sand, what would be your recommended percentage ratio of seed to sand?

I don’t think it really matters. The more sand you use, the better your spread pattern and the more passes you can make over the yard to get it spread evenly.

Perfect timing bruh! ... I cannot get the same zoysia seed bag you used. I got the peddington zoysia seed & mulch mix (good for 1000sqft/bag). Question: would be wise to just spread it as is? Or mix it with a fertilizer like you did?

Good question. I’ve never tried spreading the seed/mulch mix. I would probably still mix it with some fertilizer but maybe not at much.

@@Cenlalowell you’d have to be very dedicated with moving a sprinkler or either set up above ground sprinklers on a timer.

Great video and great series of videos for backyard project. My yard is 14,500 sq ft I currently have 16lbs of Zenith Zoysia seed, enough scotts turf builder (24-25-4) to cover it and also 24lbs Andersons Humichar. Of the Scotts and the Humichar do you think it would be better to run in the spreader with the seed, or do you think it really wont matter? BTW i tried getting some 18-24-12 fertilizer but I honestly couldnt find any locally, do you think this will make much of a difference? My soil PH sits a tad over 7 and I know they recommend having it lower than that, do you think this will hurt things much? If that your facebook page you have linked? If not do you have one for this channel?

I appreciate it! Sounds like you have the right stuff. All you’re after is some extra phosphorus at the time of seeding. I’ve never seen the humichar but I would mix it with whichever one has the smaller and more consistent prill size. I would work on getting the pH down to around mid 6 but not sure slightly above 7 is going to be a huge issue. My area is always low pH so I really don’t know the answer based on experience.
