Composer John Williams is one of America's most celebrated musical talents - the best-known creator of music for films. He has written the scores for such revered classics as "Jaws," "Star Wars," "Superman" and "Schindler's List," and is returning to the "Star Wars" universe with the upcoming "Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker." Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Williams, and with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, who collaborated with the composer on a new album of works for violin and orchestra adapted from his film scores, "Across the Stars."

Of all the great people in the world who I have not met, John Williams is the one I most want to meet. His music defined my childhood. When the music for Star Wars began on that May evening in 1977, my 10 year old jaw fell open and remained opened for the rest of the movie. Then Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire Strikes Back, E.T., Temple of Doom, Return of the Jedi, Last Crusade and so on. All of them elevated their respective movies to a level they would not have achieved otherwise. As Steven Spielberg put it, there is no greater time during the making of a movie than when you get to hear the movie with music for the first time, live in the orchestra room. Man, what I wouldn't give to have been there for Star Wars. Steven said that when they were recording the music for Raiders (I think that's which one it was. Might have been E.T.) he ruined the take accidentally by blurting out "Bravo!" before it had completed. On E.T. Steven actually made one of the scenes longer so that John's music could be expanded (when Elliot is flying his bike for the first time, I think).

You have always been my favorite composer and Im just glad that i live in the same lifetime as someone as great as you. I would love to see one of your concerts live someday and maybe get an autograph. My life would then be complete. I salute you sir. Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful music with the world.
