Funnily enough, one of my favourite things about this band is that their songs never get old. (I do get what you mean about this specific track though, cause I felt the same when I first listened to them) I guess there's something about how they change it up every chance they get that makes them unpredictable, and even when I know what's coming next in one of their songs because I've heard them hundreds of times, it always feels new and refreshing. You mentioned picking the 'wrong' song, you kind of did, and kind of didn't. The biggest problem with Car Bomb when showing them to someone is that you have to show them all of their albums entirely to grasp what the band is about. There is no 'right' song to react to imo, and some of the ones that showcase the most they can do tend to be really short compared to others, and they make you feel like there's something missing from them, because they usually work best when the other tracks are around. Still, I think this might be the best song to start with (from personal experience), because it's what works as a hook. It gives you that "wait these guys can do a lot more then" feeling and makes you want to check the rest of the album, then you go check w^ or Centralia or even Mordial, and you get an almost different band from each. I personally suggest you listen to Gratitude, Cenotaph and maybe Infinite Sun from this album. I had a similar reaction to Secrets Within as my first song; even if I love it, every time I get to the 3 minute mark I'm usually kind of bored of it being the same, but these other songs have none of that. From other albums, maybe "This Will do The Job" from w^ would also be a great song to listen to, or "Naked Fuse" from Mordial. That said, I'm really happy to see the reaction! Thanks for the special gift and I definitely don't feel disappointed by your thoughts, I actually was kinda scared you'd feel this way but as you said, we might be able to find some other songs you like. Car Bomb gang wishes you a merry Christmas!

I didn't really expect you to like Car Bomb honestly, there is very little melody to them. On the flip side they definitely have some of the most gnarly complex rythmic sections I've ever heard. I don't think they were recommended because people thought you would enjoy them, but because it's fun for us Car Bomb fans watch music people listen to them for the first time and get perplexed. This is a very "simple" song by their standards. I'd say Gratitude if you want a song you might enjoy. I think The Seconds might be their most impressive but that's hard to pick just one. Cheers mate and keep up the good work.
@ProgPro96
@ProgPro96 3 года назад
This is one of Car Bomb's most melodic songs lol. They're usually just straight up heavy and all over the place, similar to The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza. A lot of the praise they get comes from their ability to take heaviness to the next level, just like how Meshuggah and Gojira are known for being uniquely heavy. The only other song by them I think you'd enjoy is Gratitude, but there are also songs like Dissect Yourself and The Sentinel that you probably wouldn't enjoy... but it would be interesting reaction channel content haha.

Ah, that puts a lot into context. Knowing that they lean towards being ultra-heavy definitely helps me understand future looks at their work.

Oh and here's a fun fact I just remembered, this album was co-produced by Joe Duplantier from Gojira, and the one after was co-produced by Nolly (bass & mixing for Periphery). Misha Mansoor of Periphery is also a big fan, that's probably how they got Nolly to produce their album

If you want to enjoy something from Car Bomb, it's probably Gratitude that you need to listen to. The rest of their work is much closer to Secrets Within than Gratitude though. They might not be for you, very rhythm centered, not much melody, but Gratitude is definitely their most melodic and accessible track.

I'm so glad you checked them out! This isn't necessarily outside of their typical sound but its missing a few sides of the band. I believe you would enjoy Gratitude off this album much more. Honestly though, I think the band over all will be more interesting than pleasurable for you.

Good review man! They are not a melodic band, by any standpoint and take a long time to get into. The reward from their music is unlocking the puzzle of each song and each riff. You seem to check out a lot of new rhythmic bands like Periphery, Tesseract, Car Bomb and the like. You might actually really enjoy Meshuggah. These guys spawned a lot of the stuff you have been checking out. Heavy groove, improvised guitar solos, great compositional work. I would advise the song Straws Pulled At Random as a good starter. Then song number 2 is Dancers To A Discordant System.

It works in the album. One of the weaker tracks, it just has a BD at the end with a cool noise so it got recommended a lot. Listen to Gratitude or Oppressor. Wish there was a better way for you to find first time listens. Those 2 are so solid. Gratitude is the best track on meta imo but Oppressor has some need to hear candy in it. Don't count out black blood and infinite sun either in your personal listens. MC!

Gotta listen to Black Blood, Gratitude, or Infinite Sun. I think those are the best on the album, if I had to choose. Honestly the whole album is great but this song is my least favorite on there. This one is the most "boring" in my opinion with the least going on compositionally; it's just kind of showing off the drummer's mastery of metric modulation. The other songs on the album are a little more melodic and structured.

In an earlier video you had mentioned that you were looking for an early Tool song with goid vocals and interesting sound. Tool- Eulogy fits the bill perfectly. It's from the 90s, has great vocals, and is more experimental in terms of the instruments. It has it all. He also has a band called Puscifer, the only song that sounds reminiscent of Tool/APC is "Remedy". All of the other songs are very different from his other bands.

This is one of those bands I've heard a lot from without fully going through their discog yet. I always find myself impressed with their technique, but also feeling like it's just a solid take on the style pioneered by Meshuggah and developed by bands like Gojira and wishing there was a bit more innovation. I do think an important trait they share with Meshuggah and Gojira is that no matter how techy and complex they get, they almost always manage to find the groove, or have parts that repeat just enough to be memorable while stiff having plenty of changes to keep things interesting... hmmm, maybe I'm talking myself into liking these guys more than I think I do! Given your preference for melodic music I'm surprised they were so strongly recommended, though. I mean, there's some extreme bands I adore but I'm pretty sure you'd hate because they are very a-melodic so I haven't been insistent about recommending them.

On the pedal note you mentioned, Greg (the guitar player) tunes his 6 string guitar in drop Ab and usually he does those machine gun riffs on his "A" string (5th string) and if he needs to do heavier riffs/bends he goes to his lower string. On top of this, he uses a pitch shifter to go lower or higher depending on the effect he wants. Sometimes he hits a natural harmonic on his guitar and pitch shifts it to get this weird not quite laser sound. And sometimes he uses a ring mod to make the guitar sound heavier (can be heard in 6:36). The way he incorporates this into the music fascinates me.
@lupe_g2
@lupe_g2 3 года назад
And for the melodic aspect, I would recommend Gratitude, Xoxoy, but I would say that Antipatterns is probably the best one that contrasts lighter melodic elements with this brutal-heavy section in the middle of the song. On the other hand, Gratitude is probably my favorite Car Bomb song. Also Gratitude is more melodic than Antipatterns imo.

Check out The Oppressor. As someone that got into Car Bomb from the djentier side (Periphery, etc) that was the first track I really gravitated toward. Also Mordial as an album is more melodic than their past stuff, but Centralia (their first album) hits more of those jazz elements, IMO. And give a listen to some of the Neck and Spooge stuff (the bands that came before Car Bomb). Neck especially has some softer songs. Incidentally, they're the ones written by the vocalist, Mike.

Hey, I've been waiting for this video for forever, and while I think you picked a GOOD song, from a composer's perspective, I would imagine a more melodic track by them would be better. The guitarist using a pitch shifter pedal to lower some parts for expression purposes to bend chords down in certain parts. If you listen to more of there stuff you will more melodic expressions he uses this in. His accuracy with it live is so terrifyingly good. If you want melodic stuff Graititude is a good one. This band focuses a lot of their rhythmic stuff then they will surprise you with some unusual melodies in tracks and it throws you off. This band really is best to listen to as full albums though.

Such a strange story too. Apparently there was a message going off warning people to stay away from the vehicle. So the explosion was clearly intentional, but they also didn't want to harm anyone. One hypothesis is that they were trying to disrupt communications because it damaged the AT&T building it was parked at. Will be very interested to hear what the true motive was.
