Gorod is one of few bands together with Martyr, Spawn of Possession, Quo Vadis, Neuraxis, Gorguts, Death, Cynic and some others that got me into tech death years ago. Amazing band.
Since it was announced today that everyone except the singer/guitarist announced today they left the band, this timing of the reaction video is amazing.
>German progressive titans OBSCURA announce guitarist Rafael Trujillo, bassist Linus Klausenitzer and drummer Sebastian Lanser parting ways with the band due to musical differences and move on with their new group, named “Obsidious”. >due to musical differences Oh my fucking god. Steffen did *his thing* again, didn't he.
@@icipher6730 yeah that sucks, especially Linus leaving after so long but Steffen made it work before and he'll make it work again. And now we got Obsidious to look forward to, and we still have Alkaloid too
It's a shame 3/4 of the band just left it and started a new project. They just announced it today actually, so a bit of a funny timing haha. I really think you should listen to something from their earlier albums. Either from their "Omnivium(2011)" album maybe try out: Septugiant Or from their "Akroasis(2016)" you could try out: Perpetual Infinity
Advanced Corpse Tumor was probably the first death metal song I ever heard. Even by today’s standards, the musicianship is still ahead of most technical death metal bands.
Looks like some others have recommended it, but some of the best Technical death metal out there is definitely Necrophagist. Yes, they have weird names and song names but the playing is amazing. Main guitarist is also the vocalist. I can also recommend Fermented Offal Discharge or Intestinal Incubation.
'Myth of I' just released an instrumental album like two weeks ago, you might enjoy that. Can also recommend Black Crown Initiate - Withering Waves. You already heard their clean singer in your Rivers of Nihil reaction :) Drummers in technical death metal really have my highest respect. I remember Dan Presland from Ne Obliviscaris also replacing Virvums drummer when they toured with them and Allegaeon. Playing two sets almost every evening for about a month..no idea how he survived that :D
I said it last video, but alkaloid - chaos theory and practice Alkaloid has some (now ex) members of obscura. Oh yeah, obscura split up this morning I also completely recommend virvum - illuminance Much more proggy than obscura I can guarantee that it’s all the proggy and techy goodness to put a smile on your face Also, ethereal skies, an epilogue to infinity, and emergent evolution are better on diluvium
@@MrDinokun Incase you didn't know, Christian Müenzer & Jeroen Thesseling are back in Obscura, with David Diepold being the new addition. They've finished recording the new album, and it's probably going to get mixed & mastered soon.
I'd love to hear your take on Demilich. They're a twisted and strange death metal band with their own super unique sound. "Embalmed Beauty Sleep" is a good song but anything off the album "Nespithe" would be awesome.
@@Fvckedwithaknife Yeah I'm much more interested in an analysis of something more eclectic like Gorguts/Demilich than the shred/classical ripoffs of Obscura/Beyond Creation but I understand I'm probably in the minority. Maybe he can do both!
I'm with you on that one man, personally I dont even enjoy obscura or beyond creation. I get the musical talent of it. Just not for me. I'd LOVE It if he did one of Mortician though, would be hilarious ( also totally not tech death haha)
@@Fvckedwithaknife Mortician would be pretty funny. I don't enjoy Obscura/Archspire/Beyond Creation either but Spawn of Possession is my favorite band of all time and he did that so I guess I can't complain.
Check out any song by the band Wormed I'd recommend the album "Metaportal" as it's their newest release. :) (Edit) I feel the same way sometimes about some death metal bands and me wanting some of them to have instrumental releases. If they did the music correctly, it should be able to stand on its own.
Akroasis is probably my favourite of Obscura's concept album quartet (or whatever you call it). Barely a skippable track on that record. Weltseele is an excellent song to check out but it is a little long and The Monist (my favourite) and Ode To The Sun are also excellent. I know what you mean about death metal vocals, it took me years of listening to metal to like them, they are certainly an acquired taste.
Honestly the 4 albums are unique, Cosmogenesis has some crazy ass composition style, Omnivium has more experiments in harmony and composition, Akroasis has the best shred in all 4 albums besides the most experimental guitar parts and diluvium has the best atmosphere of all
You should listen to Mortification of The Vulgar Sun - from Obscura as well, its one of my favorite songs from them You should also listen to "Again", also "Selves we cannot forgive"- from Black Crown Initiate, anything from them is great, not as heavy as this, a lot more melodic and virtually no shredding
I would like to suggest Fleshgod Apocalypse, their newest album Venelo is available as instrumental version as well for those who dig that. As for tracks, Fury, Sugar, Monnalisa, The Day we'll be Gone and Embrace the Oblivion are really worthwhile, Venelo is a pure piano track.
Fretless bass! Even though the bass player has changed, they kept this distinctive element, giving it some jazzy vibe somehow. That`s part of their sound.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this song. Even if this one, maybe, isn't the best song to get to know this band. Anticosmic Overload is their all time hit imo. Great reaction/critic, keep it up!
Something more "radio play" by Obscura would be "The Anticosmic Overload". Still technical, but more straightforward rhythmically and melodically. Also, you mentioned instrumental tracks by them, check out "Orbital Elements". Both tracks mentioned are from the first concept album in the cycle.
You should check out cosmogenesis and omnivium, easily my favorite obscura albums with INSANE lineups, I was bummed when hanness grossman, Christian muenzner and jeroen thesseling left the band but thesseling just rejoined so woo.
OH I got it . If you want just an instrumental track AND you enjoy Sebastian Lanser's drumming , check out his drum playthrough for An Epilogue to Infinity. That'll blow your mind
I think you should give a listen to Cynic. Either Veil of Maya, Space for This, or Evolutionary Sleeper. Extremely good and extremely influential band.
I saw Obscura live several years ago. I want to say that it was in 2013? Great live show. I was front row, and after a song ended, I let out a death metal scream and the lead singer said, "JEEZ, not so loud, I'm right here." I kind of felt like a dick.
To continue on your Tech death week as I replied to the Spawn of Possession video, would recommend these bands. Necrophagist - Fermented Offal Discharge GOROD - Elements and Spirit VIRVUM - Illuminance First Fragment - Le Serment de Tsion Beyond Creation - The Deported Inferi - Marching Through the Flames of Tyranny
Their most famous song is Anticosmic Overload (another complex one), and their most succesful single together with Diluvium is Akroasis. Other top notch Technical Death Metal like Obscura would be definetely Necrophagist and First Fragment - Le Serment de Tsion
Great pick! :) Hopefully you've gotten more used to these kinds of vocals now. The ones in this song is almost soft and pleasant. haha Anyway, if you want some instrumental tech death that is similar to this, I highly recommend Perfect World Creation - Ancient Gods Genesis or Organic Nucleation. :)
Your technical death metal week will not be complete without Beyond Creation (Omnipresent perception / Earthborn evolution). These guys are gems of this genre!!!
If you want something like this without the vocals, check out Shadow of Intent - Melancholy. They releasead a version of the whole album thata's instrumental aswell.
Obscura may just be the Best of the Best. Good choice too. I am so glad you notice Sebastian Lanser behind the drums. His talent and dedication to music transcends through all genres. Please if you are interested check out his other projects like Panzerballet or better yet this new jazz stuff he’s been experimenting in. And man oh man is that bass tone epic! It’s what caught my attention when I first started listening to this master class band. And don’t be hard on yourself for not enjoying the vocals. I know a few people who are like myself that could care less about vocals. During raw and brutal instrumental sections the deep vocals are a fair complimentary supporting piece to help fill out the sound sonically, but I’d prefer an instrumental album with every release if I had it my way. You either love it, hate it, or you learn to deal with it lol. FYI, the drummer, second guitarists, and the bassist are leaving Obscura to start a new band called Obsidious. They kept the breakup professional.
You would probably really enjoy Mechina. They're a sci-fi movie soundtrack meets metal band. The band is completely self-funded, they don't have a record company. I would definitely recommend anything off of Empyrean. It's so atmospheric and their albums all feel like a journey. They blend metal instrumentation and vocals, with a symphonic, sci-fi back track, and it all fits together so perfectly. Check out Interregnum, Imperialus, Anathema, or the self-titled Empyrean, (if you could do a full-album reaction, it would be even better) with Imperialus and Empyrean being the better ones imo. Also there's a version of the album from 2013 that sounds a little more raw than the 2018 remastered version of it, and I honestly prefer the more raw sound. They're honestly such an incredible band and I feel like you would enjoy them!
Definitely check out "Cynic - I'm But A Wave To" if you want to get into the roots of this stuff they are large reason why the whole jazz/metal crossover exist, and they did it so well
Listen to anything from Omnivium, its a masterpiece album and a massive upgrade from their previous album Cosmogenesis. Anything Omnivium and up is their true Progressive/technically perfected musical composition, they are more than just metal, they are true musicians, their new album "A Valediction" is insanely good.
Very Nice reaction. But it's a shame that yesterday everyone except the singer left the band. My suggestions for a more streamline song would be The Anticosmic Overload (Cosmogenesis) and Perpetual Infinity (Akroasis). Also you can check Septuagint (Omnivium) and one of my favorites: Convergence (Diluvium)
Would love to see reacts to: Cynic: veil of maya and space for this (or Adams murmur) Spawn of possession: where angels go demons follow Dimmu borgir: progenies of the great apocalypse Deathspell omega: kenose I or abscission
It's kinda hard to get a grasp of what Obscura is like with just one song, since all the albums has a different feel (specially since there are different members involved in all of them), but all of their songs are basically this heavy or not too far from this. I would suggest First Fragment with the song Gula or if you want an instrumental track, you can listen to L'Entite
When it comes to Rafael Trujillo that is not the height of his skill, dude is one of the most insane technical guitarists in the world. Such a shame the band is not longer going to have it's current lineup since I personally think Rafael and Sebastian are among the best at their instruments as is Linus to be fair who also plays a big part of their stage presence. Will be interesting to see their new band though.
Love this band. They have at least one instrumental track that i can think of, Concerto on the Omnivium album. Not really what you'd expect though :D Another band I really enjoy that has similarities is Beyond Creation (Both feature fretless bass heavily).
You should react to Necrophagist, a technical death metal band from germany, unfortonaly the break up. They only got two albums, but many say that they are masterpices, i think so to. The first Album was written, played in and co produced alone by the singer and lead guitarist. He is an absolut beast. My request were the song seven, ob fermentet offal discharge. Keep up your good work. Greetz from germany
My favorite Obscura song is Clandestine Stars. Thats the one I'd suggest next. If you want something more "accessible" by then , id suggest Akroasis or Mortification of a Vulgar Sun. But Clandestine Stars is the SHIT
Great review sir..you should also react to "Inanimate Existence- The Rune Of Destruction"techdeath/catchy and melodic.available music video or mp3 mode.thank you.more reviews keep it up!.
If you're doing a tech death week, you CAN'T do it without Necrophagist. Literally anything off of Epitaph (a lot of people tend to start with Stabwound)
You cannot do technical death metal week and not react to Cynic. They (and Atheist) basically created the genre. I would suggest Veil of Maya or, if you really want an instrumental tech death track, might I suggest Textures. I would also suggest King of those Who Know and The Space for This off their 2nd album as great options.
The band just announced that they are parting ways with guitarrist, bassit and drummer…. I don't even know what to say, they were at the peak of obscura´s career, F.
