This whole album is a masterpiece from beginning to end! So excited that they are releasing a new one next year.

HELL YES!! Finally Rolo Tomassi getting some recognition!! Love that you reacted to both so you could get a more strong sense of what they are about. I still can't believe how there's almost no reactions to them. I would hiiiighly recommend you to check out A Flood of Light by them if you want to dig in more. It's honestly one of the most emotional songs I heard in my life and it's a perfect mixture of their melodic/soft side with their harsh/screaming one.

Fun lil tidbit you said they were in 7 when in actuality they were in an alternating 7 and 8! ! And during the blasting section, it's 3 chunks of 7/8 followed by a 5/4 n_n

Rolo Tomassi are fantastic. They've settled into a really mature and adventurous sound. Their early stuff had a lot more zany ideas. I think they started as a band when they were all about 16 years old and had school exams getting in the way of touring! haha

This is how they are all still so young even though they are just about to release their 6th studio album!!

its crazy to listen to "i love turbulence" and hear how young/crazy and zany they used to be compared to now lol. And the best part is that it is all so good.

Their drummer is fantastic - if you dug his work here, man...their song Opalescent has one of the best grooves I’ve ever heard.

There's more atmospheric shifts in the longer songs off of "Time Will Die...". These two songs along with "Balancing the Dark" are a lot more focused I guess you could say. In terms of genre I'd consider at least "Rituals" to be a later version of mathcore. You've listened to Converge and Dillinger Escape Plan who along with Botch are typically considered the early names of the genre in the early 2000s. The "dissonant riff" halfway through "Rituals" seems to be very Converge influenced.

Man I was really hoping you were going to listen to them back to back. Even though you figured it out before you did about the second one being very different than the first one you had just listened to.

One of the greatest bands of all time, you're always the man to react to the GOATS. Their first LP from 2007 is actually my favorite but everything is a masterpiece.

For unique vocals I suggest to check out Pin-Up Went Down or öOoOoOoOoOo. For example this one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I9uuFOHg4Qs.html Her name's Asphodel and she loves to sing with lots of different voices in her songs!

Thanks for your thoughts on these tracks I've listened to many times. Very catchy sounds. Rolo's "Time will die..." album and the new single "Drip" 🤘👅🤘

Unlike mainstream or generic vocalist I think what sets her apart is that she doesn't embellish needlessly and doesn't go pop with unnecessary octaves and such. Lots of people love the female vocals in the new converge but to me that vocalist is insanely generic and frankly it bores me. Rolo's vocalist seems to play things soft against a massive explosive sound of instruments and I really appreciate how different that is. The non-clean/screaming vocals I think are truly unique, like Converge the guttural vocals also really take it away from the washed out screaming so many other bands have (e.g. a million teeny bopper metal core bands, or armature-counterparts wannabees.)

Rolo Tomassi's Time Will Die and love Will Bury It is such a great album back from the 2018 (I remember listening it for the first time and now it's already almost 4 years old). Great mathcore with really contrasting soundscape. But please check out Psychonaut - The Fall of Consciousness from their 2020 awesome prog metal record Unfold God Man. That song has a sick groove and it sounds like The Ocean but more technical type of prog (and well The Ocean's record label produced that album which explains it tho).

That was my same reaction after listenig to that transition and ending with Rituals... And just for the record... sometimes the keyboardist joins with the growls/harsh vocals, that's why sometimes we can see (I mean, listen) even 3 voices (similar to The Hollow Hour)... I just get amazed everytime I listen to them.

Definitely worth checking out the new album. It integrates the more atmospheric moment within the hardcore metal moments. They flow in and out between styles a lot more.

I listened to the new one a couple of nights ago and I dunno, man, it bounced off of me. I liked quite a few ideas but nothing really came together for me and the album feels very rigid. I think some of that is due to each song having a vibe rather than mixing their soft and heavy sides. I missed that "where are they taking this" novelty of Time Will Die. But I also might not have been in the right mood/mindset for it either. I'm planning on giving it a second listen in another week or so and re-evaluating how I feel about it.

I'm glad you chose to listen to these two tracks as an introduction, definitely the best introduction to this band. They are about to release a new album, however I am a bit disappointed with the two singles released from it so far, neither reach the heights of Aftermath or Rituals, but I digress.

Another band I've heard of but haven't heard. Really loved the first track. Definitely math rock, but with a great dose of beautiful textures and catchy melodicism. Such tasty and tasteful bass and drum playing too (and it's awesome to hear the bass so up in the mix). About my only negative criticism is that I don't think the "big chorus" quite works, mostly because there's no real transition and it kills the cool vibe of the choruses. That said, I actually think it works in the bridge if only because it feels like more of a natural development of what the chorus established, so I guess you can say the chorus serves its purpose even if it sounds a bit out of place at first coming from the verses. Second track was pretty rad as well. Completely different of course, almost entirely proggy deathcore. It feels slightly more coherent than the first track in how it moves through its section, but isn't as tonally, texturally, or melodically interesting. It's perhaps a bit more rhythmically/structurally interesting in how it moves from the odd time of the beginning into the straight 4/4 later on and just builds in intensity, which is pretty impressive given it was already quite intense before. Honestly not sure which of these I prefer, but I really liked them both, which I guess means they're a band I need to check out. Though I get why it was recommended for unique vocals week I do think it kinda fits into the "Jinjer" mold of being a female growler who can also do poppy clean singing too. Not sure if I'd call that "unique" except for the fact there aren't many women doing that, but I feel like it's only a matter of time before that changes.
@CriticalReactions
@CriticalReactions 2 года назад
Certainly just a matter of time. I know there were female screamers/growlers before Jinjer but I think they seemed to have opened the flood gates with the virality of Pieces. Since then I've seen a bunch of bands popping up with female vocalists who do both.

I did and it bounced off of me. I'm gonna give it another go later on since I might not have been in the right mindset/mood for it. It wasn't bad at all, but it felt like a step down. And I think most of that came from my enjoyment of the "what could happen next" vibe of "Time Will Die". The new album is very segmented with each track being a single idea. My expectations weren't correct going into it though so I'm thinking I'll get more enjoyment on a second listen when I know what I'm getting in for and can meet it on it's own terms.

If I remember correctly the lower growls are usually done by the keyboardist/vocalist’s brother.
