Glad it could help... Definitely a bonus to any system I think.. Have a good one Larry...

I saw Murray Hallam talking about worms in one of his DVD's. You'd think that it would be too wet and the worms would drown. But they seem to be right at home. This is a topic not talked about very often. Great job Rob.

We get a little dark variety that are purple when squished.. We get them mainly on the chives but they will go to the green onions & young garlic in smaller numbers.. I think these actually came in on some green onions we bought at the markets... Have a good one Dale..

I think they love it... Have never seen a cocoon in there but their numbers have increased exponentially.. Have a great one...

I would not have expected worms to survive and do that well in that environment. Very interesting, they must be a sign of how well your system is doing. Thanks for sharing that.

It's amazing how well they do in aquaponics. My grow beds are full of them. They really love living in the roots of the veges. I love that they are there cleaning up the organic matter that enters the grow bed.

Haven't noticed any go down into the sump but then again I don't think the goldies would let them last too long in there.. Have a good one Jack..

We have found that most of the worms live in the "wet zone" when we pull the plants out of the AP grow beds.. There is also about 50mm of "dry zone" in the top layer of the bed so they might holiday there every now & then.. The worms in the farms all head for the surface when it rain even though they are all under cover... Bit strange that..
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 12 лет назад
Most of the compost worms came into the beds from a previous small barrel system we had & have multiplied from there.. Bit too wet for earthworms I think but I don't think the fish would mind if we dropped a few into the tank..
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 11 лет назад
The worms do fine in there from what I can see.. Every time we pull a plant we find a bunch feeding in the root of the plants.. I think they actually might help to keep the roots a bit cleaner but don't know for sure.. Shall pop over & have a look.. Cheers..
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 12 лет назад
Aquaponics is normally fairly "clean" as it is just water, rocks or gravel or clay balls fish food, fish & fish poop.. We put the worms in from the worm farm to help break down the fish "solid waste" further as well as any plant matter left in the beds so the growing plants could take up the nutriments easier.. Is a very interesting little project to be running... :)»
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 12 лет назад
I did have some garlic but it didn't do so well... At the moment we have some "mini" beetroot in there that are sort of struggling... Just not enough fish waste in the system to feed all the plants.. We added 8 extra goldfish the other day & the Perch just started to get their appetite back now the weather is warming up so we hope to see better growth soon...

Thanks Mick... Would be good to get the BSFL to drop right in the tank... Hadn't thought of that.. Will be waiting about another 3 weeks before I harvest my first batch of worms to feed them... Was hopping for another worm farm by then but manure is hard to source at the moment... Everyone is buying it up for their Spring veggie patches I think.. Have a good one..

Thanks Bobby.. I still cant get over how well they are doing in there.. We see a lot in the garden eating the mulch but no where the amount we saw there under 1 plant.. I haven't seen all of Murray's DVD's but have heard they are good.. So, you still considering a set up I take it ?? Have a look at web4deb to see a truly great green house AP set up over your way, well, over the big ditch anyway.. Have a great one Sir...

I put the worms in to our beds from one of our worm barrels.. They appear to be doing OK in there still... Every time we pull a plant there are loads in the roots.. Cheers
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
They should be right to go from the start as long as there are some solids flowing through to the beds.. Not a good thing to have a lot of solids sitting in the beds in my opinion (other's will say differently which is fine as it works for them) but there will always be a bit that makes it through for them to feed on.. I find most of the worms feed on the dead roots of plants in our grow beds & never fed ours.. Hope that helps a bit.. Cheers

Nice,wow thats heaps of worms, they multiply x10 quicker than the standard worms i have.. and if the fish are lucky one silly worm will get sucked out the bed and to fish for a snack, thats why i,d like to try a BSFL bin hooked onto the side somewhere a bit more natural food..when i get around to it..lol. Great Vid.

Ahhhhh... Though I had replied... Sorry Hamish... They are just spring onions that have gone rampant... Should of been harvested a few months ago methinks... We do have perennial leeks if you are interested... Should post alright between here & there **nods** Added about dozen worms to each of the newer grow beds the other day as I noticed the fish waste was building up around he inlet.. Will be interesting to see if it reduces over the next few months... Have a good one...

HI Rob Bob, it's the first time for me to watch your video. IT IS VERY HELPFUL (as I am planning to set up a hyroponics system in organic way...or aquaponics. in Hong Kong). May I know that What kind of worm is right for using to the ball bed? Coz I have seen some said adding earthworm, but I guess you mentioned what you've added is compost worm. thanks!

Not really sure about O2 levels for them to tell you the truth Jack.. As the beds are flood & drain the water level drops so they do get exposed to O2 a few times an hour.. Hope that helps Mate.. Have a good one..

Oops sorry, I tapped the wrong thing! Anyway I have transferee a bunch of strawberry plants and some other plants into the grow bed and I have added a bunch of red wigglers. I put some food in for the worms but I am not sure how much longer I need to actually add food? At what point do the worms simply live off of the stuff in the system?
@mrdkoser

I thought the red wigglers will crawl out of the bed - what's to keep them from escaping or wanting to get out?

+ED l Hi ED. They do fine in the grow beds as long ads the water is well oxygenated. I found some living in the base of a filter in the fish farm when I pulled it down 👍 I don't have any plans as such for the systems but am starting to post a few clips on how I've made them up. Just posted one on the chop & flip system that became the first grow bed & sump tank to this set up if you're interested. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b_VROMhAoSs.html Hope that helps some.

any special type worms for the grow bed? Or can I just find earth worms from my back yard?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Composting worms are the ones to use.. True earth worms are better fed to the fish ;) We use red wriggler compost worms.. If your lucky enough to have native compost worms in your area you can normally find them in decomposing leaf matter of in compost piles.. Hope that helps a bit, Rob.

How do you think the worms would fair in Perlite/ Vermiculite bed? Should be okay if their staying close to root structure I think. I am thinking of trying Dutch buckets. Also planning for crayfish in DWC tables. Thoughts I was having but haven't seen anyone with worms in their perlite grow media.

I am leaning toward a mix now with bio-char. I purchased 7 acres (was practically a dump.) Been cleaning it up. There are los of trees on the property and downed debris. I don't have lots of funds and expanded clay media isn't readily available around me. So I have been watching lots of clips on making bio-char and inoculating the media to get the bacteria going. then mixing with perlite to fill in the air gaps. Hoping it fairs well. Building greenhouse and wicking beds at my house first and trying it out first and then possibly commercial greenhouse on property I purchased and incorporating permaculture design around rest of the property kind of like your place. Still don't know about the commercial greenhouse, but I am reclaiming the property to hopefully encourage the neighbors to do something with their places. I may post some clips on here someday. I am a truck driver and ready to come off the road. Trying to find something that interests me to maybe do for a living and spend time with my kids. Of course and be able to still eat well and healthy. Looking forward to your next instalment and going back through your older ones as well.

This may be a silly thing to ask but how have you kept your worms alive? I went to my local fishinf store, put the worms right into my system and they almost immediately died. I think my water rises to high for the worms to live but what do you think?

when adding worms to grow bed with siphon will the worms not get drained in to the siphon too?

Hi there. I've never seen any worms in the water with our system here. I'd say that they're able to cling to the clay well enough not to get pulled through. Cheers & have a top one. Rob.

If I have worms in my Aquaponic grow beds do I really need a swirl filter? Would it not be better to let the solid waste go into the beds to feed the worms?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 лет назад
Hi lance.. We found the worms have more than enough to feed on in our beds with left over roots & other bits of organic matter that collects in there.. The solids filters also let some of the smaller solids through so the worms can have a feed on them as well.. Have seen some folks say that their beds are fine with no solids removal at all so it's one of those each to their own type deals I think.. Cheers mate & have a great weekend..

After a time doesnt the worm poop accumulate? Dont you have to reclean the stone/bed?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 лет назад
Their waste certainly does accumulate as not all of their castings are taken up by the plants.. It jut doesn't work that way.. Just need to look here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E-ZaeDlCc-s.html to see that they don't ;-) what they do a good job of though is to break down the roots that die or are left behind at harvest time fro what I've seen.. Cheers & have a great one..

are worms not common in an aquaponic system?
@TheStrafendestroy
@TheStrafendestroy 9 лет назад
So you don't feed anything to your worms? Is your piping from the fish tank directly fed into your media bed or do you have a swirl or perhaps mechanical filter in between the bed and the tank
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 лет назад
The worms ate left to forage for themselves Jacob.. Back then I don't think I had any filtration other than the beds so all the solids made it through to the beds for the worms to feast on.. Now there's a radial flow filter connected to the set up that collects some but not all of the solids.. The worms in the beds feed on any that make it through & their diet would also include decomposing plant matter (roots leaves) from the plants grown in the bed too.. Cheers mate..
@TheStrafendestroy
@TheStrafendestroy 9 лет назад

Hey Rob! just one quick question! does it get smelly with the worms? is it apartament kitchen aquaponic friendly?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 8 лет назад
Hi Sergio. There is next to no smell from them at all other than the normal earthy creek like smell you get from the system. Have seen folks use the small commercial counter top systems but they're not really any good for growing a decent amount of food. A small fish tank/ tote/storage container system would grow you a few decent herbs though I think 👍 Hope that helps some.

Would it be a bad idea to just cut off the root mass and bury it in the system? Seems like they would just break it all down for you.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Now I just leave the root mass in there for a few days after snipping off the top of the plant.. The worms do their job & it makes the root ball a lot easier to remove later in a week or so time.. Cheers :)

@ericmastenbrook9020 9 лет назад
RobBobs Backyard Farming Hey, Rob. To add to my previous comment a bit, how do you feel about burying your kitchen scraps in a corner of the grow bed, like you would in a traditional worm bed. Then it would just get broken down and added right back to your system by the worms, possibly adding other nutrients that you would otherwise be lacking? I was considering it, but I thought I better consult with a pro first :)
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 лет назад
Hey Eric Mastenbrook Have seen a few folks mention adding banana skins to help with potassium levels.. Can see no reason why a few scraps would be an issue as long as they were processed very quickly & not left to rot in the beds.. Cheers mate & sorry for the late reply mate..
