One thought: Using compression cubes in carry-on luggage is a great way to pack more items. However, if you are checking your luggage, compressing items does not reduce weight. You may be inclined to bring more items because you have the space. Be sure to weigh your suitcase after you are finished packing! **Love them for drive-to-port cruising!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I have to ask, how many compression bags do you have? I have ended up with 2 sets suited nomad, and a set of the national parks tripped brand. I use the gone large set I got originally for organizing my dresser.
It really depends on what season and length of the trip that I’m packing for. Fall and winter I use compression cubes. Spring and summer regular packing cubes. Downy has a travel size of wrinkle release that I really like. When I get to my hotel I hang my shirts up and spray them. I use the skinny oblong cubes for bras, underwear and my pajamas.
VERY GOOD review.. your style is easy to watch and your travel experience I can identify with. Keep your style natural and not a performance I really enjoyed watching.. THANKS!
I would use them as regular cubes for departure packing , and compress them when packing for return flight. That way it doesn’t matter if clothes are wrinkled, and you make room for souvenirs.
Hello! I purchased the Gonex compression cubes. I am rolling my tops and bottoms (tee shirts and leggings) together and putting them in the cubes. One thought I had, as we do not travel often, is to keep my cubes, TSA bag, pouches, and other travel items in my suitcase. Also, I will put a dryer sheet or scented pouch in my suitcase while it is stored to keep the luggage smelling fresh. I am very thankful for your tips and the information you share with us. You have eased my mind about our upcoming vacation. We have not flown in 28 years, so these videos help us so much. Also, thank you so much for always responding quickly when I comment with questions. I truly appreciate you!
I love my Eagle Creek ones, high quality material and they open fully, but I did make the mistake of overpacking them and it got heavy 😂 This brand is more expensive, but I also have a backpack that has travelled extensively since 1991 and is still in pristine condition. Loved this video Laurie, thanks for your great tricks and hard work!
@@sherylcampman2012 I made that mistake on a trip to Barcelona last November. So I was packing heavier clothes, and compressing them on top of that! 😆 So on the following trips, I was more careful. I still love them!
I have a set from Eagle Creek and one that I bought at TJ Maxx from Sharper Image. I like both, they both do their job, but I like the fact that I can open the Eagle Creek cubes all the way around, and the Sharper Image only open kind of half way. But, they both compress, they can be thrown in the washer after each trip, and now I only use compression cubes when traveling. Thank you for this video!
@@nikkipieronek271 I only use carry on, and I pack an empty spray bottle in case of wrinkles. Honestly, plain water works as well as Downy - I find no difference except for the smell factor. I just spray the garment on a hanger, and tug it to straighten out the wrinkles. You can also use a blow dryer to hurry it along, or hang the clothes in the bathroom and let the hot steam from the shower work its magic. Happy travels.
Hi Laurie, I use the camping compression bags when coming back, and roll up smaller items to fill around the sides of the luggage, no wasted space! Yes, totally understand to consider the weight at all times.
I just found your channel 😁 Binge watching!!!! Great tips!!!! I had regular cubes and love them. Never heard of the compression cubes. Headed to Amazon now to buy! Thanks.
I really appreciate your practical and informative (from experience) videos. One pro for compression cubes I’ve seen listed while comparison shopping is that the material is supposed to be somewhat waterproof. On a recent trip it started pouring rain, and with no where to go for cover my husband’s luggage wasn’t waterproof and his clothes were soaked. So, another reason I’m looking at compression packing cubes.
I love compression cubes, the Gonex ones open all the way round, so you don't have to try and slip your clothes in as you had to with these. I also roll my clothes and they fit perfectly!
I live in Alaska and travel mostly during the winter. Compression packing cubes are a blessing with bulky items. I almost always check a Travel Pro 22 inch Sky Pro suitcase even though the bag size is compliant with carry on restrictions. My carry on, under the seat bag is a nylon Baggalini tote that is a crossbody that has a sleeve that slides over the roller bag if I want to be hands free. I no longer use larger suitcases since they are two heavy and awkward to handle. I enjoy your educational travel tips. Keep them coming.
I use clear large and extra-large, and small "ZIP LOCK" plastic bags. You can really see whats in the bags. When those clothes get dirty they go right back in bag. Lottttsssss cheeper and easier.
I learn so much from your videos, Laurie, and find them really enjoyable, even though I do not fly often these days. I got the national parks set on your advice. I do suggest that people be very careful about which set they order. I followed your link, and ended up with the set made for checked luggage instead of the set made for a carry on suitcase. Since I only travel with carry on luggage, the two biggest won't be of much help for travel. I'll have to use them for storing off-season clothes in my home instead. (Since I don't live in the USA, I have to make a special trip to the US to pick up orders from Amazon and other countries, so it isn't possible to return them.)
I got the same bags per your recommendation. Didn't lay the shirts in but rolled them. Got 12 in but couldn't compress. That was ok. Right now in my Travelpro 21" carryon(thanks!) I have 12 shirts, 2 cardigans(went in medium bag) Teva sandals and New Balance soft sneakers stuffed with socks. Under the bags I rolled my 3 pairs of jeans and one bermuda short and put in the "trenches". Bags on top and still loads of room in that bag! Thanks for all your tips! 10 day trip....even room for the liquid bag if I choose to put it in! Also carrying a Baggalini crossbody purse that can hold alot..
Many thanks Laurie for your great advice! I wish I had known about compression packing cubes before! I love clothes, and am an over-packer, so I have learned to travel lighter, and I bought the Tripped ones, as I love the designs..can't wait to use them! I excitedly pre-packed and could fit 7 dresses in a large one! And yes, I have a baggage scale, so am careful to weigh my carry-on! 🤩
Thanks, Laurie. Glad you said something about weight. I live in the U.S. and last year travelled for 10 days to Italy. Weight allowed was 8kg / 17 pounds. Compression bags really won't work. And they weighed our bags at the gate. (Of course, with your suggestion of having a hand scale, we were spot-on for weight.)
Thank you for watching! So I'm curious-did they not tell you beforehand that your bag would be weighed? That would be very frustrating. Thanks for the tip.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Yes, the airline said up front what the weight restrictions were for their airline to Europe. As long as you're in compliance, it's smooth sailing!
We traveled for 2 months using compression cubes successfully. One suggestion I have is a built-in label holder so I could identify each one by type of contents. I stuck paper labels on but they kept falling off.
Thank you for your review on the compression packing cubes. I didn't like the compression packing cubes because I can't unzip all the way around. The way I use my regular packing cubes are that I kept my clothes inside the cube even at my destination. I just place them directly in the drawers and unzip. I've considered changing over to compression packing for so long but still hesitated for that reason.
I use these all the time after watching your videos. I travel a lot and often to Canadas North which requires warmer clothing & additional items you would not need going south. I often end up staying at a hotel before I can connect and with he compression bags I literally only have to access one bag to sleep/ get ready for bed. Love these.
I have half a dozen or so packing cubes from eBags, which I love, so I haven't bought compression cubes...yet. Interesting to hear the pros and cons. Thanks!
I love my compression cubes. Another benefit is that once I reached my destination, I didn’t unpack the cubes, I only released the compression zipper and put the whole bag into a drawer. My compression cubes have a zipper that allows the whole top to open up. Not only did it make it easy to find my clothes and stay organized during my trip but when the time came to repack, that was so easy too. If you do use a compression cubes and you find it hard to zip up, you are putting too many things into it. It has helped me be more efficient in what I take on a trip but still allowed me to have enough choices. I wouldn’t travel without them.
Oh my goodness Laurie- you are an influencer!!! I was in the Austin airport yesterday and 3!!!! People including me had the same personal item striped bag as you!
I am currently on an overseas Caribbean trip. I also love compression cubes but you have to be careful because when you compressed your clothes and get more in your suitcase it is heavier and harded put up in the overhead compartment. I recently got a set of compression packing cubes by Lermende and they have a partial mesh window, zip all around and are the fabric you mentioned. I believe there were 6 or 8 different size compression Cubes, 2 of each size.
Hello Laurie I have used Eagle Creek for years. I bought the white strobe compression packs as I can see what's in the compression bag. I take a clean dirty bag in blue and a green regular eagle creek bag for my clothes line, Scrubba and microfibre towel to do my washing. . I also use a small eagle creek envelope for trousers . I also use the small go tubes by human gear . I have a qantas travel bag like your black one that weighs 3.2kgs and I only have 7kgs for carryon. I also have my hand luggage bag like your black and white striped one.. I invested 8 years ago in extra light Kathmandu shirts and trousers both in long and short tops, nylon pants in black and brown. that don't need ironing. I take two light but very warm merino tights and top on the plane and for layering plus a big but warm and light down coat. I take the same clothes for every holiday. I also have the weight written on the tags of my clothes that helps me keeps my luggage from not going over. Lastly missing travelling but watching these videos and preparing itineraries helps so much. I am from Sydney Australia.
Hi Laurie, thank you for sharing your opinion on these. I have had the eagle creek regular ones for a very long time and I love them but was thinking of buying the compression ones for my carry on and I’m familiar with the creators of the brand Tripped they are you tubers also and I have been subscribed to their channel for a couple of years now and I remember when they announce the Tripped packing cubes. Have a wonderful weekend.
I am thinking about trying compression cubes. I’ve always used the regular ones the past few years. I like the regular cubes because they’re so easy to just take out of luggage and pop in dresser because they open all the way around. So easy to take clothes in and out. I always roll.
Gonex has the see thru part where you can tell what is inside AND open all the way, which are both negatives Laurie pointed out on hers. I absolutely LOVE mine. (Medium and small size used the most.)
Cubes are good cuz I like to be organized thank you Lori! Still have to keep in mind the weight of the items you're packing you should do a video on lightweight clothing!👍🏼🙏
I am an over packer, roll and use regular cubes but now will try the Tripped brand of compression bags and looking forward to using them. Thanks so much for another great video!
When I use my compression I roll my clothes. And for the small bag, I put a clean shirt and undies and stored in the bottom of my personal bag that goes under the seat.
In my case the compression cubes didn't result in an increase in weight. They simply allowed me to take a smaller (and lighter) suitcase! I find the colours very useful, as it allows me to find things quickly (particularly in carry-on luggage) I also reserve a contrasting bright or light colour to keep items which must be removed and passed through the x-ray machines separately. Not only does this save a little time, but more importantly, I don't accidentally leave those items in my bag!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie As they say, necessity is the mother of invention; and making a journey twice a year with only a 30-40 minute transfer (if you are lucky) focuses the mind to make changes to speed things up! I also use one of those clear plastic cubes to protect the often rather flimsy bags approved for liquids, along with a list of the contents (and volumes on a spreadsheet which totals) should I encounter a 'jobsworth' - often found at Manchester Airport in the UK!
I use Eagle Creek and swear by them. All the spare space available after compressing gives me the ability to downsize the suitcase i use. Far less likely to be checked at the gate and nice and light for transporting between airport and hotel. I’ve just watched your ground up packing system; imagine combining that with compression SO much space. 🙂
I have that set of Tripped compression cubes. I can get 6 pairs of underwear in one of the small ones, and 2 sets of pajama tops and bottoms in the other small one. I can get 2 pairs of leggings, and 2 rolled up swing dresses in one large one. In the other large one, I can get a week’s worth of tops in the other one. I use the long skinny bag for a pair of flip flops, but I could probably get another pair of shoes or sandals in there. I bought another set just so I would have extras for an extra outfit in my personal item bag. And then I made a winter emergency cube and a summer emergency cube for my car.
Lewis and Clark makes great compression packing cubes. They actually address several of the negatives you mention: they are see-through, the zippers open all the way, and there are many styles/sizes. I've been using mine for several years now and they really hold up well. I haven't washed mine as often as I should, but they're machine-washable, too I bought mine when the local Boston Store was going out of business, but even on Amazon, they're not that expensive. And really, because they last, it's worth it.
Headed to Montana soon so I think I’ll order some of these to try out. I’ll have sweaters and more bulky clothes. I definitely don’t like the plastic roll up type. Thanks for your videos. 💖
So grateful I found your video. Six of us traveling to Scotland for 10 days-caveat- everyone gets one carryon bag. Our car rental just won’t allow more- I was looking at Peak Design or Eagle Creek. Our trip has 7 different lodging stays- I was hoping since they have handles- they could just pull out the bag with the first 3 days clothes without having to repack everything. I’ll let you know how it goes! Also- who cuts your hair? I have honestly cut my own hair this past year bc my stylist quit to have her precious baby- I would love your recommendation! Live in Houston.
Hmm, something to think about when packing an extra outfit or two for the under-seat bag or backpack. I think I might give it a try for that. I only pack a carry on for me and DH. I even got away with it for our 10 day land/sea Hawaii trip. I used somewhat of a vacation capsule wardrobe for us and it worked out great. Basic bottoms for at least 2 days wear, with more focus on different tops. I think overpacking is our biggest downfall if we let it be so. Thanks for another great video. Stay safe and be well.
I have never tried these but may need these tips with an upcoming travel overseas during winter. Love your channel!! Will you be doing another prime day video?
One thing that will help with wrinkles is the use of tissue paper. I use white tissue paper between each fold of my clothing and it reduces the wrinkles. During the holidays I get several package of tissue paper and use it throughout the year.
There are many types of compression packing cubes that open up on all three sides and have a see through panel. I did a lot of research on all different types of packing cubes because I was supposed to be going to Italy this month but Like everyone else our trip got canceled.
I ha ve used Eagle packing cubes for years of travel then realized after unpacking my suitcase and storing Eagle packing cubes in my bag just how much weight they add to a suitcase. I then found the jumbo size zip lock bags at the grocery store and switched to using them. I discovered I am able to see what is in each one without opening a cube and can dispose of them easily if I choose once returning home rather than storing them.
I have used the Hefty jumbo ziplock bags for mission trips to Central America. I used one for each day of our trip and pack the outfit including underwear, sit on it to get all of the air out then zip while sitting on it! I have used other packing cubes for years for other travels. Love being organized! Just ordered compression cubes for a month trip to London, Ireland, then a Baltic cruise.
Hi Laurie. Thanks for the video. I use packing cube a lot to travel and yes, it helps me also when digging into my luggage for things in my suitcase during my trip. I usually leave everything inside my luggages for exemple if we stay at a place for just 2-3 days and than I know if I need 1 shirt especially, I di not have to dig and trow out everything outside, I just pick the cube I used for shirts. I would like to know if you use the luggage spandex protection or the luggage wrapping that they sometimes offer at the airport. My big concern with luggages is that the zip brake and suitcase open during the transit. ANyway thanks again.
Laurie..do any of the 4 companies you mentioned open up all the way...or do ghey all open up 3/4 way. I do agree what you mentioned it sould be eAsier if they opened up fully. Please let me know. Thank you.,( former National and PANAM EMPLOYEE) Thank you. Regina 😊😊
Hi Regina, now I do not remember the companies mentioned. If you find some you like, buy them and return what does not have the best quality. I love the @tripped brand one I showed.
I know this is a few years past your posting this, but I have been eyeing the Tripz brand of compression cube you show here. Can you tell me if the tube container has a compression zipper? I can't see one on the video. Maybe it is not necessary for that specific bag. I have a 4-piece set of the Bagail compression bags that I ordered months ago and will be testing them on an upcoming trip. Just today I went ahead and ordered a 2-piece set from Tripz to see how I feel about those. Thanks for your channel and all your wonderful tips!
compression cubes for only 2 scenarios. 1) When traveling with carry-on (personal item) on budget airlines where size (not weight) is the only restriction. 2) If you want to travel with smaller luggage but still take advantage of your weight allowance. You may also have some size restrictions, such as stowage during non-air travel...think small cars and motorcycles. Otherwise, lightweight regular cubes for organizational reasons is the way to go.
I’m feeling better. Chemo treatment has been lowered. I mean the dosage is less, so it helps. Plus, I only get it once a week. On the 19th I l’ll have tests done. Praying for a clean bill. Thank you for asking.
Hi, I just returned from Belgium and still only took the 20 inch spinner. Video coming out Saturday. Would this video be helpful: bit.ly/2023BestCarryOnBags
Hmmm you could use those ziploc ones, but to me they are cumbersome because they do not just fold up when not in use. This new type is a very fine mesh if you want to try them, and they are on Amazon so send them back if you do not like them: bit.ly/3FZfSi5 It is hard to tell that they are somewhat see-through in these pics though, but I have them.
Take a picture of the clothes you're going to put in each bag prior to foldingir rolling them..preferably different colored bags.,then whenever you want an item just look at the picture
Great video. I love packing cubes! I’ve used compression cubes my last 2 trips and I am a roller. I was a wrinkles mess , more so than regular packing cubes. But I wanted to travel carry with carry on only for 17 days so wrinkled I was. I like the compression feature but Weight is a huge problem. I had to remove items a couple times to get the weight low enough to the point I think the compression was wasted. I’d love to hear what other “rollers” think. Thanks for the great video, I always look forward to them.
Pretty sure its going to wrinkle no matter what in a compression cube because you're squishing all the air out and squeezing the clothing as much as it allows. I would suggest using a travel size garment steamer if allowed in a carry on. Some hotels also have irons. You can always ask at front desk if its not provided in your room. There is also wrinkle releaser spray downy makes.
@@nikkipieronek271 yes I buy a small travel size wrinkle reducer. So when I get to where I'm going i hang my clothes up and spray my clothes and when I'm ready to wear them they are pretty much wrinkle free.
Was thinking wrinkles, too, rolled or folded when compressed. I just use regular cubes, fold, and pack light in my carry on. I wash out some things on my trips. Keeping it simple!
I take my time rolling my clothes before I put them in my compression cubes and I don't have wrinkling problems once I hang my clothes at my travel destination. I also bring a small fold-up luggage scale so I know exactly what I am capable of loading into each suitcase.
I use regular packing cubes 14"X5"X...maybe about 3". I love them. I fit all my clothes in 3, except bras, in the suitcase channels. I don't unpack my bag at locations, just pull out the needed cube for a moment, like drawers. The trouble with compression cubes is that they just encourage a person to pack more than is needed, and add weight. I aim to keep my carryon bag weight under 20 lbs, with which packing more in compression cubes would interfere. Weight is a huge consideration for me, for comfort and maneuverability. That being said, in my bag I pack a tiny square compression packing cube with a change of clothing (unders, a top & Pj's), in case my carryon bag is checked/misplaced...so it does work well to fit it into my personal item if needed, but just one. We are all different so YMMV. I also rarely use makeup so that saves a ton of space.
Did you see my video 37 Travel Hacks? I talk about it in that video. I love it. I would use it if you have to pack a ton of clothes! It’s almost like a second suitcase but fit under the small plane seat.
Thanks for your videos. Getting ready for a 18 day trip to Europe in the winter so what do you recommend to compress our bulkier winter coats? Trying to master packing we have packing cubes but we do not have compression packing cubes. I was reading reviews of some of the non vacuum compression bags but the reviews are all over the place. Don't want the vacuum since we won't have access to a vacuum while traveling. Thanks. Alisha-Ed's wife.
Oh wow, I mention these compression cubes in almost every video. They were made by travelers; the zippers are wonderful. And you get 2 large in a set of 6. You could pack a trash bag in the coat pocket and when you get to the airplane, stuff your coat in it? Are you checking luggage? Have an amazing trip!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie yes we are checking luggage. I watched some videos that claimed the compressed packing cubes really weren't that much different compared to the non compressed so I never invested in them. I can see that they might be more ideal for underwear things like that. I watched your videos too late so I am bringing more sweaters with me but I am going to revisit my closet to see if I can pack more layering suggestions that you made only thing is I don't own any thermal tees or the cuddl dudds suggestions. I did just purchase some of the fleece lined pants from Eddie Bauer that I am hoping will arrive in time since I needed to order those in a petite. I tried them on at the store and loved them. I did order a waterproof boot from Timberland that seems great and not too heavy but if those don't work I will just bring my oboz waterproof shoe and my overland boots only thing is the overland boots really aren't meant to be in the snow/rain but they are so comfy. Hardly bringing any makeup only foundation and blush and then alot of my skincare products is what I am focusing on for hydration. And then my workout attire and pajamas. Not bringing any hair styling tools they never work in Europe even with the adapter and convertors.
I ordered the Tripped compressions cubes like you profiled and just got them today. They're for a trip the end of September for 7 days. My husband and I are checking one bag so we have to share the suitcase (to save $ on checked bag charges) and I'll also use some of the cubes in my personal item backpack. It's not the clothes so much for me, it's all the other stuff--makeup, charging cords, Kindle, shoes, medications, snacks, etc. But I think the compression ones will definitely help. Thanks for the recommendation!
I love the tripped compression cubes also! They are very well made. If you haven’t, you should check out their youtube channel. I love their travel videos 😊
I do not because I am a squisher. I like sliding things inbetween each other. I love the concept of the stow n go. With Amazon I can order and return once trying it out so I may get it. Packing next week in my compression cubes again. It's a game changer for Fall and Winter bulky clothes. Thanks for watching, Kellie.
Hi Kerri. Links are always in the description box below every video. It's an old Anthropologie from February and not available anymore. I love it though. Thank you for watching!
Hi Elizabeth! All links will be in the description box below each video. This is an old Anthropologie top. I almost did not keep it, but I bought it before COVID and never returned it lol. Thanks for watching!
I'm planning a trip to Iceland this June. I've booked with ICELANDair where they have a carryon and a personal item allowance. In my hurry I also paid for checked luggage while I plan on renting a car to drive around for 10 days, staying at different hotels. Iceland doesn't require a lot of clothing so I now feel like I could have skipped the checked luggage and just made do with carry on and a personal item. Also, having to haul a checked 76 delsey moncey hard shell in a rental car boot must be a pain in the @ass ..
Just wanting to let you know, I have watched several packing videos for tips especially with compression packing cubes. All the videos I've watched, the people roll their clothes instead of folding them. Maybe try that next time if you want to see if it works for you?
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie you're welcome! I just thought that maybe it could help you in some way since you mentioned it. Honestly it could just be preference as well! Good luck! I can't wait to travel again.
