I picked up this clapped out compressor cheap just for the pump but everything ended up being repairable so I kept the whole unit to increase the volume of air to my sandblaster. I did a hydrostatic test to 300 psi to check the integrity of the tank. Now I run two compressors for my sandblaster and the results are very good. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching. 👍

Hello Stuart! I can't believe this video didn't show up on my feed before! What a great restoration! Those are such nice straight forward compressors! Great stuff!!!!!!!!

😂😂😂That’s because I’m too slow at putting out videos. I fall off people’s feed even though they’re subscribed. Thanks again for your encouragement my friend. The old Australian- American- English brand compressors are the best ones. Designed to last not to a price. Cheers mate, Stuart 👍👍

What a great job on the compressor, I particularly liked the electrolysis and the way that the anode almost totally fell apart when removed. Thought that the gift of the replacement decals was a nice touch by Compak.

S.W. very nice work.. I bought one from a co-worker and it was gas engine and I wanted to convert it to electric.. I got an electric motor, hooked it up and it took forever to pump up..So I tore into the compressor and found one of the cylinders had a broken connecting rod.. so I purchased a new compressor section (single cylinder) and hooked it all up and it worked great.. the only piece of the original set-up was the tank.. everything else was new... I didn't get away as cheaply as u did , but it worked great.. S.W. thx for taking us along on another adventure.. Take care my friend...

Hi Gary, sounds like that was a headache to fix. I think once I had found that broken con rod I’d have quit that one so good on you for preserving with it. Thanks for your comments. Cheers my friend, Stuart.

Another top notch vid Stuart. Of all the skills I’m trying to glean from you, the art of scrounge is where I struggle 😂. I search local flea markets and the like and it seems like the closer to home something with appeal is, the dearer it is. But, that’s ok..patience is key. Anyway, keep up your great work, it’s always a highlight of the day when I see a new video of yours in the list 👍. Cheers. Ian.

Hi Ian, thanks for the compliments but how am I going to get my head out the door now😂😂😂. Funny, I always feel that my local stuff is more expensive too. I use eBay to add to my collections but I’m yet to get a bargain there. Gumtree can be good but I have to be quick. That’s where I got the compressor. There are two local auction houses that I've picked up some pretty good deals from but that’s a little hit and miss as I’m watching online so I don’t get to really “see” the items if you know what I mean but being local they really only attract local buyers. Our local rubbish dump has a drop off area where people can drop items that other people might want and they also have pickers that grab stuff being dumped. It’s all put into a huge shed and outside yard and you just wander around and pick out what you want. There are drivable cars that people just want to get rid of, tools, furniture. You name it I’ve probably seen it there. There are no set prices, just what the person behind the counter says. That sounds like a weird way to do it but I never argue as it’s nearly always cheap. If you don’t like the price you don’t have to buy it. Some days I get nothing and other days I come home with the car full of stuff. I have bought two pallet jacks there, $10 for one which just needed a $7 seal and $15 for the other with nothing wrong with it. I found a very rare car gear shifter and paid $5 for it and sold it for $650. I have some photos of the place so I will include them in a video and I will pay more attention to saying how much I paid for something and where I got it from. I’m always curious about that kind of thing and I’m happy to share it. Thanks again my friend, cheers Stuart.

Excellent job Stuart! I've done a lot of electrolysis cleaning, but wouldn't have thought to use it for cleaning inside the tank! By the way - did the old tank have much sludgy water in it? I was thinking that may have been some of the extra weight!

Nice set up, well done. My old one was leaking, under some seals, sounded like a mouse squeak or something, but much louder. Bought a new 2 cylinder one, does 350 L per minute, still little slow for sand blasting.

Great job. I bought my compressor from Compac in QLD, it was a used model that had been traded in on an upgrade. I’m curious to the size and type of blasting cabinet, would love to see a few more details about that at some stage. Perhaps as you walk us through your restoration of your original compressor.
@scroungasworkshop4663
@scroungasworkshop4663 2 года назад
Hi Jon, my blasting cabinet is nothing flash but has been a work in progress for about ten years gradually making improvements so I will be doing a video on that in the future. The twin compressors has been the best improvement by far though. Thanks for watching. 👍👍👍

Good job. I have a Binks Bullows 7.5 CFM the same vintage. Had it from new. The cheap Chinese ones sold now are total junk. Be aware those polycarbonate filter bowls deteriorate with age and eventually crack and explode. Cheers Rob
@scroungasworkshop4663
@scroungasworkshop4663 2 года назад
Hi Rob, good to here from you. I payed special attention to the polycarbonate bowl for just that reason. This one was about 5mm thick with none of the spider webbing they get when they’re old but thanks for the warning. I’ve noticed that some of the Australian made compressors, while made here, are using Chinese pumps and electric motors. I really can’t see any of those lasting 50 years. Cheers my friend and roll on summer 😂

@scroungasworkshop4663
@scroungasworkshop4663 2 года назад
Hey Time Flys it’s great to hear from you my friend. I use garnet as it’s sharp and probably the best value for money. 30-60 grit really gets the parts clean quickly and I have walnut and other media I’ve never used them. If I want to be more gentle I just reduce the pressure. It also gives a very good surface for primer or powder coating to adhere to. Hope this helps, cheers 🍻

@@scroungasworkshop4663 Thanks! I have only used normal sand. It is super cheap, but does not last very long before it becomes powder that blows away!
@scroungasworkshop4663
@scroungasworkshop4663 2 года назад
@@timeflysintheshop Sand is a very bad idea because as you say it breaks down very quickly and it’s also very dangerous because the super fine dust that the blasting creates gets right down into the lungs. This can cause silicosis which is scaring of the lungs which is, at best debilitating and at worst fatal. Most filters used with sandblasting can’t capture this super fine dust. I have a huge dust collection system that uses three truck air cleaners but I still wouldn’t use sand so please stop using it my friend, it’s just not worth it. Cheers Stuart.
@timeflysintheshop

@@scroungasworkshop4663 No worries! I have not used my sandblaster in many years. When I did, I wore a respirator and I did it outside in a corner where I could sweep up the sand and reuse it. I am sure I probably still got some in my lungs, but if I decide to blast again, I will get a cabinet and use something other than sand.
