I recently put together a new PC with a 24-core Intel i9-14900K with 64 GB of RAM. This simulation was intended to test the speed and performance of my new computer.
This simulation consists of two, differentiated, pluto-sized planetesimals colliding and merging over the course of 24 hours, simulated with 10 million particles. It took my computer roughly 12 days to fully compute the simulation along with an additional few days to render.

Particle Count: 9,999,898
Simulation length: 25.33 Hours

My friends thinking of getting a 4 thousand dollar computer, have a good recommendation? I pointed him to Corsair Vengeance pc line, but you might have a better idea.

The Intel i7-11370H has 4 cores, 8 threads, and a max frequency of 4.80 GHz. I haven’t used this CPU before, but based off some benchmarks I’ve seen, I’d estimate the i9-14900K is around 4.5 to 5.5 times faster than the i7-11370H.

how do you track the collision when rendering without it moving to the side of the screen because of the planets moving?

Set “Move to COM (center of mass)” in collision setup. Then take the average velocity of all the particles and move the camera accordingly.

@@alek.john.lester-astro_geo ok i turned on move to COM and the collision stays in the center so i can render it do you have any settings in the rendering setup to make the collision look good

Are you talking about what data is being displayed? If so, the red and orange hues attempt to visually depict the temperature of the particles in the simulation based off the specific energy of each particle.

It’s technically Specific/Thermal Energy per unit of mass
