On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-18-22.
We’re looking at a 1980 Dodge Mirada in Silver Paint. The car comes with a 318 CI V8 engine with a automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Kyle Karp. Kyle’s had this car since 2022. Kyle shares he’s knew where the car was kept and would ask the Owner if he would sell it, however the answer was no. After many years, the Owner shared it was time to sell the car. Kyle has done the work to confirm it was a 1980 Chicago Auto Show build, and he has pictures too.
To see details on the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show, go to www.MCACN.com
ENJOY!

Very interesting concept car - I always thought that the Mirada was under appreciated. Born at the bottom of Chrysler’s economic crisis, it had little support and eventually was lost to history. What could have been. Thanks for showing the one of one concept to us Lou. Happy Holidays!

What a shame that Mopar didn't put this Mirada into full production! That car is slick! Equipped with a standard 318 2-barrel carb engine and Torqueflight auto transmission, the body style looks so sleek and modern. I also like the hideaway headlights, which surprised me that they weren't functional. Definitely a concept car with it's painted rear seat. Interesting car indeed!

Yeah, it’s a shame the Magnum didn’t stick around long enough to get the Magnum version of the 318 or 360. I had both in Dakotas and they made a good 100 hp more than the malaise era engines.

@@seed_drill7135 I have a 1998 Ram with a Magnum. It makes pretty decent power. It just has the dumbest intake manifold in history. I'm just wrapping up the intake plenum gasket repair. Bolting a steel plate on the bottom of an intake manifold makes no sense.

I bought an ‘81 back in ‘88. You didn’t see many of those back then even. It had the T tops and the aluminum wheels. Unfortunately it was brown. 😀 In 1980 only, the E58 360 was still available. It had a windage tray, better cam, and 4 bbl. 727 torque flight transmission with that engine.

Always liked the Mirada and the 300 of the same generation, but this particular version really hits it out of the park! Looks much cleaner with the headlight covers and without the extra windows in the "C" pillars. The build quality also looks better than the norm for that (desperate) era for Chrysler. While the styling is definitely from a different era, it does not look 40+ years old. Noticed that the 318 did not have the "Lean Burn" box hanging off the air cleaner. That should be considered a "plus" as well. Nice to see a younger guy taking care of this vehicle. He seems quite knowledgeable.

EXTREMELY cool Lou.. While on leave right after tech school as a young airman i landed at airport in Detroit to get home for Christmas in Michigan there sat inside the public terminal a red or maroon Dodge Mirada in Dec 1979.. Not sure if it was maybe for 80 model year. That car has always stayed in my mind as i could not believe how sleek and cool it was. This video was great. And BTW ive retired both as military and civilian careers for the Airforce. Although not actively searching for a Mirada maybe someday ill find one❤

There is really very little about this car that is different from the factory ones that were produced. The vents on the front fenders are different and there is the addition of some trim on the roof and the opera windows have been filled in. The front and rear portions that are made out of metal, instead of “plastic” have the same shape. This isn’t so much of a concept car as it is a customized car.

As an 80s enthusiast, I like this 80s concept car, with it's silver-y, gray-ish white color. It makes it so retro, so 80s. I am a little disappointed Dodge built it on 1979 for the 80s photo show. It also makes me think the 70s and 60s are just copying the 80s. It's much too early for that type of wedge stuff, and black bumpers, retro 80s-looking interior, and 80s retro headlights and taillights, for the 60s and 70s. The 60s and 70s always love copying the 80s, when it comes to cars. I started being interested of your videos by the Edsel videos you posted years ago. I think the Edsel is a unique car, compared to the other cars with a bland, over-used horizontal grille.

Miradas with 318 stock engines were unique for their time... Much more unique than K-cars or Omni Chargers were during that same era.....

Actually it was if you think about it. The Magnum replaced the Charger and the Mirada replaced the Magnum. I have owned a 80 cabriolet version since brand new.

Among all the "sketchy" (and too often just plain ugly/boxy) early 80's sedan designs, there were only a few that stood out as tastefully sculpted and futuristic... the Dodge Mirada was one of those special cars, BUT, seeing it in this "concept" form with headlight covers and unique body treatment really makes you appreciate it more. It almost looks like a visionary preview of what would become the Buick Grand National (I know, Dodge vs GM).

Having owned 2 Mirandas in the past, this isn’t really a concept car, but more of a customized version of the factory car. It is even built from a factory model, and has only a few changes. Plus it debuted at in 1980, the same year that the Miranda was released. Concept cars are usually built without a VIN and are far from production ready. It would have been nice if the factory would have made the front and rear ends out of metal, but they wouldn’t pass the safety standards of the time.

As the owner of this car I will tell you that I did extensive research on this car from talking with Chrysler to the project manager for this vehicle. I have documentation from Chrysler stating this vehicle to be a concept vehicle. I did find out this car was a pilot car/test mule, one of if not the first Mirada's ever made next to the clay model. Basically this car was used to test the assembly line and fine tune the building process. The car left the plant as a semi-complete badly aligned mess that was than stripped to a shell again and reconstructed. The car if seen up close is a lot more modified than you'd expect. The font and rear clip are both one piece epoxy molds, the roof was welded in where the C pillar glass normally sat, the roof and T-top setup is a 1 off set made my CNC and was the first T roof J body ever made. This is the only Mirada built with black leather seats. Synthatex built the car and was strictly a show/concept vehicle builder for the big 3. They were not some small time custom car shop. Have whatever opinion you'd like but according to Chrysler and the company that built it, my research, and every previous owner, this is in fact a concept vehicle.

Too bad Chrysler was so cash strapped, If I was Lee, I would have called this a Magnum and put a 360 4bbl 727, 8.25 3.73 Suregrip axle, that would have been a awesome car and def survived most of the 1980s with very little changes!
