The State is a social contract, a guarantee of social order in exchange for which the citizens agree to reduce their freedom. “The state is a geographic feature which we visualize on the political map” The state is the centre of all politico-geographical studies, political geography has rightly been described as the geography of states. The term ‘State’ is central to the study of Political Science.
Human beings are social animals and cannot live alone. When people live together, they fulfill their socials needs. But everybody is not good and kind. There are all sorts of men and women, who exhibit various emotions such as pride, jealousy, greed, selfishness and so on. The best is to control human perversity through means of political authority. Therefore people are bound by rules of common behaviour. If these are broken then they can be punished. Society fulfills people’s need for companionship; the state solves the problem created by this companionship. The state exists for the sake of good life. It is an essential and natural institution.
राज्य एक सामाजिक करार आहे, सामाजिक व्यवस्थेची हमी आहे ज्याच्या बदल्यात नागरिक त्यांचे स्वातंत्र्य कमी करण्यास सहमत आहेत. मानव हा सामाजिक प्राणी आहे आणि तो एकटा राहू शकत नाही. जेव्हा लोक एकत्र राहतात तेव्हा ते त्यांच्या सामाजिक गरजा पूर्ण करतात. पण सगळेच चांगले आणि दयाळू नसतात. अभिमान, मत्सर, लोभ, स्वार्थ इत्यादी विविध भावनांचे प्रदर्शन करणारे सर्व प्रकारचे स्त्री-पुरुष आहेत. राजकीय अधिकाराच्या माध्यमातून मानवी विकृतींवर नियंत्रण ठेवणे हेच उत्तम. त्यामुळे लोक सामान्य वागणुकीच्या नियमांना बांधील आहेत. जर ते मोडले गेले तर त्यांना शिक्षा होऊ शकते. समाज लोकांच्या सहवासाची गरज पूर्ण करतो; या सहवासामुळे निर्माण झालेली समस्या राज्य सोडवते. चांगल्या जीवनासाठी राज्य अस्तित्वात आहे. ही एक आवश्यक आणि नैसर्गिक संस्था आहे
