Concept2 Rowing Machine Maintenance: Part 3 the Chain and Handle

Today we're going to the underbelly of the beast! The systems that keep the handle and the return of the handle functioning. Reasons you might need to service this area: you may find that you have broken links in your chain, frozen links, or if the handle isn't returning "crisply" and/or if there isn't tension in the system.
Concept2 parts are cheap and the machines are built to industrial strength. So seriously, don't neglect them!
Start by lifting up on the latch and splitting the machine in two parts. Then stand the machine upright and pull out the plastic sheet, give it a wipe down if it's dirty, which will then expose the chain and bungee system.
If your chain is having an issue, you're going to need to flip the machine over and get in there with some tools, with Concept2 will walk you through. They'll give you a maintenance guide that will show you everything.
If your issues is the handle not retracting, there's an easy solution: and it starts with the bungee. If you get under there and you can see the elastic on the bungee, it needs to be replaced. If your problem is the handle not returning as it should be, get into the bungee attachments. They attach in two places - the left and the right. On the left it's a hook that faces away, on the right it's a hook that faces towards. If you need more tension, loosen the hook and feed the slack through. Creating a higher tension point on the bungee so it has a greater return tension. Make sure you equally tension both sides.
To put it back together, put the plastic sheet back in and put the pieces back together. Easy as pie!

I can hardly believe that this machine is so user-friendly! Even I can do it! Best investment I've ever made.

Thanks, Shane! I just watched the three part series, as I'm moderately tool handy and could handle something of this scope. I just changed the dead D Cells on the Concept2 at the gym. Later I saw the chain 😩 on the machine....which has a liberal coating of rust further into the flywheel. I found Concept2 oil on Amazon. (More than that I won't do because it's a bit intrusive on my part!). I watched this because the more I row on that machine, the more I'm planning a massive Spring time garage cleaning. I have a feeling I will end up with a Concept2, LOL. I appreciated this clearly described maintenance series as I would definitely care for my own machine. You made giving it good care relatively easy.

really enjoyed the 3 videos... Only thing i would suggest is putting in a video on the chain change itself.

I have a little trick for frozen chains.. Let them soak in some diesel for 24 hours. The chain will be better than new. Then add Concepts oil or regular seweigmachineoil before reattaching the cain. Works like a charm

Hi there ! Loving the content ! :) Quick question, if the rower isn't maintained well, lets say for 2-3 years nothing was done, no oil put, no fly wheel check ... How much in % approximately can it affect my performance on the rower? (I want to maximize my open performance) The rowers at the box differ pretty much one from another when it comes to smoothness. Got honest answer from coach that maintenance was being pretty poor. What would you recommend doing? thanks for replying !

It seems that few fitness center techs understand C2 rowing machines. I have two pet peeves. 1. Bungee breaks at the ends and the techs just shorten and stretch to cords instead of replacing. The result is excessive return force that quickly tires your forearms. 2. Crunchy hubs. It seems that high use machines develop vibrations in the hubs. Not sure exactly what wears but when you do a longer row like a 5 or 10k, your hands will tingle for several hours after rowing. If you just sit down for a quick row it seems ok but when you row longer pieces it’s a big problem. Techs seem incapable of understanding and fixing this problem because it’s more of a quality than functionality issue. I gave up and quit a national chain club because of this. They simply would not/could not maintain their machines. I’m now at a club with Water Rowers that are much smoother and don’t seem to develop the vibration problems I see on C2s.

Good video. Does adding more tension to the bungee not make it marginally harder to pull on each stroke? And will that not change accuracy of PM readout?
@DarkHorseRowing
@DarkHorseRowing 7 лет назад
Stefan, we would argue that adding tension to the bungee is only necessary if it has lost tension from it's original tension point therefore you wouldn't be making it harder, you would simply be resetting it. And no, it will not change the way the PM reads the machine so no worries there. Great question and thanks for asking!

Can you create a video dealing with the seat that squeaks and doesn't ride smoothy. The rail is clean. Thanks in advance.

Hi I'm no professional, but I had some problems with the seat not rolling smoothly. I cleaned the rail, but flow was still not smooth. then I checked the rollers under the seat. They were grimy. cleaned those with plastic card and then damp rag and now it slides well again. hope this helps

Got to tension both sides of the bungee to make sure you are pulling at both ends? haha.

For the first time ever, I encountered a problem with rowing today and stopped training. I was doing 1000m efforts with a minute recovery (which I am sure is irrelevant) but every so often it felt like there was no resistance whatsoever on the chain and then it would be ok for another minute or so. I presume after seeing the videos it will be a chain or bungee problem. However, my immediate problem is that I am disabled somewhat, having broken both hips - one is pinned and plated and the other has been replaced and I have one leg longer than the other as a result! This makes getting up and down off the floor very difficult and slow. It would be helpful if someone could give me an indication of what the problem may be and if it is serious, so I will be down there for as little time as possible! It was all the more frustrating today as it was my first row this year after hitting 3 million on Jan 1st!!

I think what you’re experiencing is a clutch starting to go bad. It’s an inexpensive and easy to do fix. Give C2 a call and they’ll be able to get you the right part.

@@DarkHorseRowing Thanks so much for your speedy reply. I have contacted C2 and they confirmed that it sounds like a clutch issue and I will need a new flywheel. Sorted!
