Occlusal concepts are an indispensable aspect of dentistry. Though quite important and frequently used, they are often confusing. This video will help you understand centric relation, centric occlusion and maximum intercuspation, easily through illustrated animations.
Centric Relation is the relation of mandible to the maxilla when the mandibular condyles are in the most superior and retruded position in the glenoid fossa with the articular disc properly interposed. It is seldom termed as ligamentous position or terminal hinge position. Centric Occlusion is the occlusion of opposing teeth when the mandible is at centric relation, often termed as Inter-cuspal position or convenience occlusion. Maximum Intercuspation refers to the complete intercuspation of opposing teeth independent of condylar position, also known as habitual/ acquired occlusion.
