Today, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality will weigh whether or not the data centers get a waiver on air pollution.

They were told there wasn't enough power available BEFORE construction. Install batteries instead of generators. Charge up overnight.

not that easy, doesn't hold enough. also what about when power is out, internet must go on. need gens.

@@fredsmith6324 It is that easy. They do hold vastly more than enough. This is literally going to MAKE the power go out unless they get to put 1000s of tons of pollutants into the air every hour. Summer is coming, it's known. Plan for it and reduce your usage like any sane entity when facing possible and predicted shortage.

Can anyone pls show a picture of the generators? what they look like and sound like? are they the things that look like trucks outside the data centers?

They sound horrendous and can be heard for miles during regular typically twice weekly testing or any other time they are used... The data centers are awful enough already with their constant loud humming from the coolers and fans used to keep all the databases cool, -far more extensive and much louder then any normal industrial air conditioning system.

And yep! They are the things that look sort of like gray truck trailers but stationary all lined up outside...

If you hike in or just above Strawberry Canyon or live near the north Ridgeline of Panoramic hill in the lower section of the nearly 2000" tall rugged hills south of the UC Berkeley Laurence Livermore Lab (which is also in the hills) you can sometimes hear a horrible loud roar and oscillating high pitched ringing sound going on for hours at a time from the massive lab generators... Yikes! This is because the National Lab uses so much electricity durring high powered experiments (a pretty routine occurrence at the lab) that the power utility PG&E is actually incapable of supplying the lab enough electricity durring those times despite having multiple substations just for the lab alone. The sound when the generators are going is just horrendous and really kind of spooky actually. It permeates the wooded Canyon and tall hills when they are in use which is thankfully not the majority of the time. The cooling systems and masive freezers which are always going are also noisy and can be heard more faintly from a distance in much of the same area but still, they are not anywhere near as loud and are much less instrusive overall. Along with the frequent loud ball games and high powered stadium light from the college sports facility below basically, it pretty much ruins the area as a place to live. No, I don't live there but I am quite familiar with the area. Panoramic Hill is really the only hills neighborhood anywhere nearby that isn't extremely upscale and exclusive. It actually has a lot of run down rental housing and not just for students.
