Indeed, most of my flying has been uneventful, smooth and in severe-clear skies. However, or three or four occasions over the past 55 years, I've found myself pushing away slight anxiety that is a normal and expected biological response to stress, to concentrate at the job at hand. Bottom line is we don't have time to indulge thoughts like, "am I going to die, today?", because we're too busy doing our jobs, as we should be. I would think this mindset is pretty typical among pilots.

My experience also. The responsibility you have as a Captain also helps to push fear away. Reaction typically comes after.

Mostly because business travelers would rather leave the US in the afternoon, get 8 hours of sleep on the plane, arrive in the morning in Europe, work a full day with their colleagues there, then fly back. Flying at Mach 2, you get a half night of sleep, and have to either depart really late or arrive before your colleagues in Europe are up, *and* you pay more. The average vacation traveler is too cheap to book supersonic flights, which leaves only the rich vacation travelers and the rich "rub my money in everyone's face by buying expensive things" travelers.

Thanks for that; as you say, very interesting. I think the official report downplayed the significance of the missing undercarriage spacer, whereas, in Mr Hutchinson's narrative it was of crucial importance.

Interesting video. In my airline days, the first response to an engine fire warning was to identify/confirm the affected engine and only then execute the memory items/checklist.

Wasn't he fired by BA for landing at Heathrow with way below minimum fuel and all engines flamed out while texting to the gate at Terminal. 4.
@Simon-us1fu
@Simon-us1fu 3 года назад
Not fired. He was confined to a desk job for the last few months before retiring due to his decision to land at LHR with 25mins fuel remaining, BA policy was that Concorde had to have 30 mins fuel remaining at the end of the flight. There was an option for him to add fuel at Shannon before continuing to LHR but decided not to.

Yes. It was called 'doing a Walpole'. The FE and the P2 both tried to get him to divert into Shannon for fuel but he refused. An arrogant man, I think. He thinks god can keep him out of trouble. Not man I'd relish flying with with attitudes like that.

@@gzk6nk I also found it strange that this flight in question with the engine failure that he chose to land in JFK which required an autoland. Surely this would be a classic diversion to the alternate scenario. Assuming the weather there is better of course.

Lovely story. I am uncertain about some of the details though. Normally if one AP kicks off then an autoland is not possible.

My thoughts exactly plus the 60,000 ft.
@briancattle669
@briancattle669 8 месяцев назад
@@mizzyroroConcorde’s cruising altitude was around 60,000. It would never cruise like a conventional airliners, it did a cruise-climb just drifting up as the weight reduced. I’m not familiar with the exact architecture of Concorde’s automatic landing system, but with a single autopilot automatic landing is possible albeit in a fail-passive rather than fail-operational state.

@briancattle669
@briancattle669 8 месяцев назад
@@mizzyroroThey do. As I said, Concorde didn’t cruise per se, it cruise-climbed between 50,000 and 60,000 feet depending on weight. There’s plenty of information about this on the internet and in books. May I suggest you do some reading to avoid looking rather silly (again). In fact, just type “concorde cruising altitude” into Google. Comes straight back with 60,000ft. 😊
@blueb0g
@blueb0g 6 дней назад
You wouldn't be able to start an autoland with only one AP functional, but if you begin a coupled approasch with both in and one fails, the other can execute the landing.

@mizzyroro
@mizzyroro 3 года назад
You weren't at 60,000ft. Concorde rarely reached that altitude. It would mainly happen near the equator where the air is much cooler. Plus for the relatively short hop to JFK you wouldn't have had enough time to get to 60,000 ft.

I expect he knows what he was talking about.
@silverliteway
@silverliteway 2 года назад
I think he knows what he's talking about but have also heard other pilots say they cruise climbed from 41000 up and the plane creeped up on height and speed from 41000 and up to 55000 - 57000 by the time it was nearing the eastern seaboard. 2.02 mach would come along around 52000 and up and then the next 5000+ feet was engine efficiency and natural height gain due to the craft becoming lighter. So I think he is saying 60000 as a turn of phrase rather than specific height when concorde didnt routinely reach exactly 60000 feet on most crossings - I'm not a pro but just putting together info being a bit interested in concorde. Concorde was circa 185 tons when fully laden and 50% of that was fuel so the fuel had a relatively large impact on altitude during the cruise climb.

Very professional and impressive guy - "I never get scared because I'm confident in my abilities and experience". The he confesses he has to ask a make-believe entity to help him. He's perfectly entitled to say he's completely confident and he probably is. He's also perfectly entitled to say he believes in an invisible and unprovable entity. But I'm equally allowed to consider his skills and abilities to be less than his first self-assessment given his self-confessed reliance on an invisible and unprovable entity. Be one or the other. Such a pity.

No mention of his grounding by BA after nearly running out of fuel on a flight back from NY. FE and P2 both tried to get him to divert into Shannon for fuel but he refused (no CRM there, then). Seems he thinks God will keep him out of trouble if he stays current in praying. Arrogance, and with attitudes that should not be taken into any aeroplane cockpit. I would not fly with anyone like that.
