Video of final Concorde departure from Kennedy International Airport - "Speedbird Concorde 2" (British Airways 002).
I tried to capture, for one last time, the excitement and adrenaline of seeing Concorde take-off, and its effect on those working at the airport (ATC and Rescue Squad comms overheard on my radio), and those watching by the sidelines (listen to the comments, and car horns honking on a nearby road) as Concorde takes off from JFK for the last time.
It was FREEZING outside, but was definitely worth it!
This video would not be possible without the help of the news crew on hand, who graciously allowed me to 'borrow' power for my camera after I lost my battery at the last second!

Since i was a baby i lived in a small town next to London Heathrow, and i grew up hearing that Concorde go off at 10am and then again at 6pm every single day for 25 years. As a kid i saw her go through the red livery, blue livery and then the new livery, even from my back garden i knew the sound it made when it was taxiing and i would run to my bedroom window to wait for the roar and then to see it zoom past. I'd be at my grans house next to a famous golf course that used Concordes image, and it would land and fly over her house and i would rush outside when i knew it was time it was landing. In my Mum and Dads car going past the BA hangers, the sirens would go off and there would be a Concorde on tow waiting to cross the road going back to terminal 4, where i would be hoisted up by my dad, climb half out of the sun roof with the rest of the kids in their own parents cars and could almost touch it it was that close. I'd often go to the Queens building with my mum to see it land and take off. In all the years it never failed to grab the attention of children and adults alike. People, grown men and women, would see it driving past and pull up on the pavement, climb out onto their car just to see it take off. It just had that awe-struck effect on people. Everyone who lived around the areas of Heathrow lived for over 30 years with the shaking of window panes and rumbling of the ground, car alarms going off and the loud cracking of air from her afterburners as she took off. It was a spectacle of the day that everyone where i lived was used to and no one complained, well except for those under the glidepath. She was a major part of my childhood and when i tell Americans that i used to see her twice a day everyday for 25 years, they think it's amazing and say i was really fortunate. And to be fair, we all were. My grandfather worked on her, flew on her and no matter where you were, Concorde played a huge part on the towns and community's. Before i was born it had captured the love of my grandad and that followed on with me. I was infatuated with aeroplanes anyway but that rare bird always made people stop what they were doing, forget where they were going, just to watch this girl grace their presence. Terrible loss to aviation this girl!

+Jamie Swinburn... Concorde will never fly again I'm afraid. It has no certificate of airworthiness and without the backing of its manufacturer (Airbus) it won't be able to get that certificate. It is a far too complicated machine for anyone to maintain without manufacturer input. nobody makes parts for it and there are no spares. Sad, but we will never see her in the air again.

I worked at JFK from 99 to 2002 and it was always a thrill to watch the Concorde take off from over the customs parking lot. Everyone stopped what there were doing once those jets were fired up at the beginning of the takeoff. Long live the Concorde, it was quite a special bird in the sky, you actually felt the vibration in your chest, great feeling.

I'm a Brit. Thanks so much to the Americans for putting up this vid. We loved her- it bought so much pride to our country. Such a shame she got mothballed before her time. There's a slim chance she might fly again, but sadly I doubt it.

In the mid 90's I worked in an office in West London about 5 mins flight time from LHR and Concorde used to come over at about 11:15 each day. The windows of our office used to shake and if I was on the phone to a client I had to apologise and explain and call them back 30 seconds later. I never minded because I got to see and hear the most beautiful aeroplane that man ever made. I could never have afforded to fly it then. Now that I could it's grounded. Still I guess I got to see it fly, truly it flew good.

I remember seeing that bird come in from England to JFK at around 8:00 AM on the dot, every morning on my drive to work. I would tell whether I was on time by the Concorde. I would glimpse her flying across the road I was driving on for my morning commute. She would come in on her final approach, looking like a giant bird of prey. Amazing aircraft and a pleasant experience that I shall miss.

I have a quick story I hope you'll enjoy. I grew up (and currently still am) not to far from JFK, about a 15 minute drive in VS. As a small child, when we were out to dinner at a diner I used to draw the Concorde on my paper placemat, begging to see if we could go down to the water to see it. Sometimes we got to, and it was always the highlight to my day. Then, one of the coolest things ever for a child happened.

Your video brings back such fond memories. When Concorde made here first appearance in Tampa, Florida, I and 30,000 others greated her from the top of Tampa International Airport. The Captain did a 75 foot flyby over runway 18 Right and then banked right out over Tampa Bay. Not an image I will ever forget! She looked like a needle with wings banking over the bay, the sun quickly setting in the west. A beautiful sight, a beautiful bird. Never another like her.

You have a lot to be proud about mate. You Poms (and the Frogs, of course) showed the world what you were capable of with this aircraft. You've done the same thing with the Harrier, Vulcan, Nimrod, Spitfire etc for years. And that's just aircraft.!!!!!!!!

For me as an motorvehicle engineer, concorde gets way more credit than A380. She should be back in service, should never be retired. Concorde flew for 27 years without any accident. Building a supersonic airliner requires way more professionalism than a subsonic liner. Hats of to the engineers who made it possible.

This plane should should still be flying , but down to politics it isn't. It was a template for the way forward, but now we have planes that carry passengers at the same speed as fifty years ago, hardly progress. Total step backwards .We won't see anything like Concorde for another fifty years.

(con't) My grandfather, who was a travel agent and had buddies in the airlines, was able to arrange a quick visit inside the Concorde by the fine people at British Airways. This was back before our era of paranoia, when you could freely stand around JFK and take photos without fear of harassment, and go straight to the gate without a ticket. I must have been no older than 10, and I got to sit in the Concorde's cabin. An experience I will never forget. Wish I could've flown in it, of course. =)

I am absolutely gutted I never got to properly appreciate such a magnificent jet. I was born in '96, and didn't really have a true appreciation for aviation until around the age of 10 which was beyond the final flight. I knew of her existence and I had a 1/400 replica of G-BOAF, but I was never lucky enough to see her in 'person' or fly on her. All I have is a static display in Manchester (144 miles away) or videos on RU-vid. Thanks so much for uploading this, you have no idea what it means.

I only watch this through a veil of tears. She was sooo beautiful. I taught swimming near Bristol & rushed outside wearing only my costume & towel to watch her fly low along the valley before banking north saluting over Bristol & 'home' to Filton. My father learnt to fly in the halcyon days of the 30s & I slept in my pram under the flight path of Liverpool Airport. Oh, that this pensioner could still afford to fly. God bless Concorde.

Concorde was alotted a certain amount of flight hours before she needed to be re-worked and the main reason they decided to retire her is because the costs involved in re-working the aircraft for another few years didn't seem feisable at the time...high fuel and maintenence costs affected this also. As for safety--Concorde had a superiror safety record..1 crash in 27 years and mostly minor fixable problems onboard ;)
