Outro; Burning Footsteps by Teknoaxe - • Burning Footsteps -- T...
I finally sat down and started tearing in to the the 2012 Kawasaki Concours 14 (known to me as Sora). Having bought her used I'm unsure of the maintenance history. So I'm taking the time to check/adjust the valve clearance, flush the cooling system, change the spark plugs, and while everything is taken apart I'll be install a shiny new canyon cage.
This is going to be my first valve check on a dual overhead cam four cylinder sport bike, I've done valve checks on other bikes and quads, but those have been much simpler machines without so much to them.
But before I can do any of that, I need to get to the engine, and it is buried under all the fairings, covers, panels, plastics, half the frame and about a million miles of wires. This video is about 2 hours of work shrunk down to a RU-vid size bite.
If the valve check does not look so good then I will need to do an adjustment on the valves. There is one thing to say about the Concours 14, there sure is a lot of junk in the trunk. Even with all the work involved here, I still love my Concours and will enjoy many more long years with her.
Are you still here?
Why are you reading this?
Is it for the free stuff? You really want free stuff huh? I do have some stickers just sitting here doing nothing, just gotta ask and give me an address to send em too.

Proud to say that in 34years of riding many Japanese bikes usually clocking up 50/60K on each bike I have never had the valves checked on any bike or ever had a problem.

Thanks for posting this, its a little disturbing to think if I buy one of these bikes that I may one day have to do this. Your video is much appreciated.👍 Thank you. From Northern Ireland 🌌.

I had the valves checked for the fist time at 28,000 Kms 3 shims needed changing. I had them checked again at 55,000 Kms and no shims needed to be changed. It was a $800 Cdn bill to do the work each time but as you can see the amount of work it takes is intimidating. If I hit 75,000 I will not bother to have them checked again. Even changing the air filter requires significant fairing removal; a real pain in the backside.

That is impressive work. I've had it stripped about half way to change coolant, brake fluid, clutch fluid, air filter. Just now going to attempt spark plug change, but looks tedious and time consuming with little space under the tank.

Just a suggestion. As you remove each piece,place the attaching screws/bolts in a Ziploc bag and duct tape the bag to that piece If you throw them all in a common container , you're in for a real puzzle upon reassembly.

Thanks for the video, I have to replace my radiator due to a stone hit and was having double getting the lower fairings off and now I see why. Great video and thanks.

Glad I could help. I've though about going back and filming again now that I'm better at it, but I also don't want to have to go through all that again!

You should have bought a radiator guard... my 1400 already had one installed... however... all my header bolts are loose... so... the radiator is coming out and this time all the bolts get blue locktite on them... what a pain this is!

Just finished the valve clearance check on mine. 2010 model, 27000 miles, every shim was tight. Doing the shims is the easy part, it's getting to the buggers is the real pain....

I think I’ll sell mine when the valves are due. What a nightmare!!
@AdamNDJ

That is how I fell in to mine. The original owner traded it in just before valve time. The best part was that it was to a Ford dealership that either didn't know what they had, or just wanted it off their lot cause I ended up paying half the bluebook for it.

Im on my 2nd Connie 14, i took my first one in at 35,000 miles to check valves, 27,000 is what manual reccomends, mechanic said the engine was tight, no need, i took it in at 68,000 miles mechanic told me what ever oil i was using, keep using it, the valves did not need any adjustment, the oil i always used was10w40 Mobil1 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil, & used a little Heavy Duty Lucas Oil Stabilizer, & i ran that bike into the ground, all hard miles, just telling you what i experienced, got rid of my 1st Connie w 70,000 miles on it, still ran good..

the mechanic I go to {as I will not attempt valve adjustments on this bike on my own} told me that in his 40+ years of owning a motorcycle repair shop he has never, ever seen a set up as ridiculous set up as this. He asked me to not bring mine back for valve adjustments on this bike for a very long time. He also told me that as for the c-14 after your 1st valve adjustment this bike for the most part may not ever really need it because the 2nd time around there would be such a minimal amount of adjustment that it just might not be necessary unless you are riding it at over 100 to 120mph all day long on a daily basis.
@AdamNDJ
@AdamNDJ 7 лет назад
I do find that interesting, it isn't quite as difficult as it seemed at the beginning. Once I'd had the fairings off, the second time took half as long, and the 3rd half that. There certainly are worse bikes (any VTEC honda...) I'll see how much they stabilize after the first one, but that is still a ways away.

sound probable that he exadurated for his own benefit.Admittedingly Not wanting to do the adjustment again and followed up with a good sounding (technical advise) By downplaying the need.. Common but not a good practice especially if the customer is versed in the field of psychology.

@@usacitizen8634 In this case his mechanic was telling the truth. These bikes are known for almost never needing valve adjustments.

It surprises me a little bit that he wouldn't want to see the bike back. Yes, it is a pain in the butt to work on, but if they didn't have to work on bikes, they wouldn't be able to charge for the work and would not make money. I am seriously considering doing this myself too.

Stupid question, but other than the lack of front turn signal lights, can you ride the bike after you strip all the plastics off? Reason I ask is that I will remove the plastics and just ride the bike to my mechanic like that so that he can do the valve service. Probably save me some money that way, I guess.
@AdamNDJ
@AdamNDJ 4 года назад
Not at all a stupid question. I could prolly be done, but I would be concerned about a lot of the wiring. A number of the brackets that hold the wiring in place are attached to the plastics. Also the hoses and intake tubes would be unsupported. I do know a few people that have done the strip down on their bikes and then trailered them to the mechanic. Would prolly be the safer way to go.

It is certainly something that I have mulled around, there is little visual information out there on this bike and it would help out a lot. It would require quite of bit of production set up though, there is a lot of back and forth, and lots of little pieces and parts. To do it right (in my eyes) I would have to make sure I didn't leave out anything, and showed all the little stuff with the best detail.

Kinda depends on the condition and maintenance performed, but from a general "good" condition, that is a decent price.

Primarily for the valve check/adjustment, but also for other maintenance items like coolant flush, spark plugs and various inspections.
