Why this band wasn't bigger than it was drives me NUTS trying to figure that answer out! One of the MOST underrated and underappreciated bands of all time
@@googoo6077 Late 80s , early 90s Saw them live and it wasn't in big Venue which is what they deserved , They had some success but they weren't as big as they should have been . Like Superstar status like one of their mentors , Michael Stipe and his band REM.
Drew Townson Their lyrics are sheer poetry. This band is kinda Ike a best kept secret, everyone I've ever turned onto Concrete Blonde have become another fan
I remember when this song first came out. My friends and I were in awe of how long she could sustain on one breath. It kinda became a party tradition to blast this song and attempt to sing along without running out of breath. We normally never made it, but we never grew tired of playing this awesome song 20 times in a row!
Johnette’s voice is a powerhouse! I love it. She doesn’t sound like a Disney character or prepubescent like today’s female singers do. This is a woman.
The way she is reverberating her voice in the chorus saying heal it up is beyond words! It's one of the coolest things I've ever heard anyone do with their voice in any song ever of all time!
I just love this band. Their music is just so captivating. The vocals are just perfect. I just love hearing this beautiful lady sing. As for the guitarist & percussion just out of this world. Why oh why are they not at the top of the ladder??????
I found this band at 13, and for almost 30 years after i've at least listened to one of their songs everyday since. And I will continue to my dying day. To me there will never be a better vocalist, male or female.
The genuine article. What you see is what you get. Not selling any fantasies or dreams, just being herself. You can not give any more than that! Thank you, Johnette for bringing joy to so many of us!
I also love that Johnette has not screwed up her face with plastic surgery - she looks like a woman who has lived and she is beautiful. I saw her 2 nights ago in Portland - her voice still moves me to tears.
Hit da Minha adolescência em São Paulo SP Era 1993, zona norte, Eu com 14 aninhos voltando a pé da escola ouvindo CONCRETE BLONDE na fita K7 no meu walkman amarelo da Sony.....🥰
I've been listening to music, for, going on...50 years now. Country, Rock, Disco, R&B, Punk...everything. This band, her singing and song craftsmanship...was always some of THEE best that I've ever heard. Her vocals style, which could be supremely powerful and gritty(This song), could then be matched with a silky, vulnerability, like in "Caroline". It truly has always made me sad, that the public never fully appreciated this group and Johnette, for the greatness and musical purity that they crafted. This, coming from someone who listens to everything from Frank Sinatra, to "Emerson, Lake and Palmer." Concrete Blonde...They stand tall, before most others.
a work buddy turned me on to Concrete Blonde and said all their CD's are good except for Mexican Moon. He said MM was over-produced and they were selling out. Mexican Moon turned out to be my favorite Concrete Blonde CD. To each his own.
It's a tossup, Moonpie. Keep a brilliant band to yourself, or hope they sell a bunch of records. I've been a monster fan since '89. In the closet I want it to spread like religion!
Concrete Blonde will go down as one of the most overlooked bands to ever exist. This band should’ve been HUGE and should’ve had a massive career. Someone dropped the ball on this one big time. She’s absolutely stunning.
I remember watching them perform this song live on one of the late night talk shows (Letterman, I think) and Johnette was singing and playing bass like she was possessed. Like an animal that had just been released for its cage. It was rock n roll fury and passion at it's finest. I hope some day it finds its way onto RU-vid.
I saw THEM open for Sting in Worcester. Saw the MM show, in a full on 'Noreaster, on Lansdowne St, and finally got to meet HER in P&T at the Middle East. She tops my list of superior musicians. And Russ, if you read this, that night you made it in the snow storm for the MM show remains one of my all time favorite musical memories. I play Mexican Moon often, and always remember that night. But I miss you.
I remembered Concrete Blonde as a very good band. I've spent the last hour listening to them and they're absolutely magnificent. Kudos to my younger self, you had good taste in music, son.
Possibly Concrete Blonde's finest. Everything works /perfectly/! JN is at her most seductive and passionate since The Sky is a Poisonous Garden;'. Her bass hits all the right notes, and doesn't bother hitting any others. Paul Thompson' drums go /boom/ at all the right moments. James Mankey's guitar on this track should be an inspiration to a new generation. That solo is one of my favorite /ever/! A few, well placed notes that sells the emotion of the song. Pay attention, pop tarts! This is how it's done!
Agreed on all counts. My only complaint about this video is that when I'm watching it, I get so distracted by Johnette's looks and moves that I don't pay enough attention to the audio. Then I have to play it again with my eyes closed. I can live with that, I think. ;)
Stormsinger99 This video always surprises me when I see it because I don't really think she looks like herself in it. She's beautiful in it, as she is in all their videos. But she just looks so different. I get the feeling that one of the music label-types took a strong hand in having hair, makeup and wardrobe craft her look in this video. That isn't a criticism. It speaks to how naturally beautiful and charismatic she is. She can pull off any look and her essence will still shine through.
JamesTheScot I agree completely, and have had the same suspicions about the involvement of music label execs and stylists. This video is completely unlike all of her other appearances that I've found. I was only half joking about it being a complaint...she's drop-dead gorgeous here, but I just can't accept it as anything but a stage persona. And no matter how she looks/looked at any point, her true beauty is in her songwriting and singing. I was lucky enough to see her a couple of years ago in Austin, and she sounded better than ever. She just seems to get better every year, like a fine wine.
Feeling the fire Under my feet I was a liar You were a cheat Playing with knives We were cut close to home Close to the bone You're so alone Something to have Something to hold Something to share So I've been told Deep in your eyes You're one hundred years old Cause the years have not been Kind to you, you know Heal it up Heal it up Heal it up. Feeling the pinch Feeling the hole Feeling the void Deep in my soul Feeling my feelings So out of control Cause the years have not been Kind to me, I know Heal it up Heal it up Heal it up
THIS NOT ONLY MAKES ME FEEL ALIVE, IT MAKES ME FEEL EMPOWERED, even though we all know we are powerless..... america needs a wakeup call. Revolution be thy name!!
I've alway loved concrete blonde, they are one of the best, band i can think of and this is one of there greatest song ,so thank you for adding it ,you are awesome
Her voice is astonishing. Not merely the pitch or the power, but how she controls it. There are lots of singers out there who are technically solid, but somehow lack substance. Johnette has one of those rare voices that transcend the norm and become something greater than the sum of the parts. I could listen to this woman sing all day long and I'd STILL be finding new subtleties and nuances. Oh yeah...her lyrics are pretty damn good too...
A timeless masterpiece that still gives me goosebumps. The vocals and guitar are masterful. This band never quite made it mainstream which I feel makes them special and true to their artistry. If there was just one band today like this I would be satisfied.
Was listening to Concrete Blonde earlier in the year & said to my other half I wish they would reform & come to Australia as I would so love to see them.......... Well sometimes wishes do come true...... They are playing in Brisbane on 19th November & I get to see them live............. Yeeebloody haaaa!!!!!!!!!!!! Life just got AWESOME!!!
Linda sem ser apelativa. E que voz! Talento nato. Não se fazem mais outras como ela, infelizmente. Coisas que só os bons anos 80 e 90 puderam fazer pela gente. Quem viveu, foi feliz. Saudades!
