Hey Mike,love your videos.I the same age as you,I’m a retired mason in NJ. I was drafted into it because my grandfather,My dad,my uncle,my brother worked together. I was the youngest son son so I was the laborer until I was older. But I agree with that teacher you quoted about being aware and Listening and watching. I would go an hour early with my dad to get the mud going,scatter the blocks you set up! I kept ahead of them so I could listen and watch and learn(my brother really didn’t want to learn it but he is 5 years older than me so he pulled rank on me so I had to be the laborer. Sorry for gabbing here… I think I got the best masonry education watching and listening,they never had to ask for anything from me everything was waiting for them. But my point is that being able to listen to what someone is trying to teach you is Very important!

I adore you and your videos!!! All the way from South Africa. Wonderful that there are some honest to goodness artisan professionals left in the world. Someone who takes pride and cares enough to make these videos. I am already onto watching some of them a 4th time! Question. Our houses here in SA are plastered brick where the plaster is smoothed using a wooden plank so that it's perfectly smooth. You always smooth your plaster with a sponge. Wondered if you ever plaster large areas and smooth with a plank?
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck Год назад
Hi Kevin, sometimes yes but mostly my jobs are close to the ground. And making some parts thick and other parts skinny to flatten it dosent make sense, sometimes I use a stucco effect to hide the imperfections, especially old stone foundations, thanks mike

You used the fast setting concrete, and that if you thought you needed you'd put a little Portland cement in it. How would you determine whether you needed Portland cement? - what would that do for you, and how much Portland would (did) you put in it (i.e. what ratio?)

In El Paso, Texas, I need to repair about a seven foot eroded section of curb that tapers into a driveway, similar to what your first curb repair was in this part 4 video. As a dyi, I’m not sure about working with the rebar, but what material cost do u think this project would be for me? I called three concrete companies to give me a price to do the job and not one ever came by to look at it, so I figured I might as well learn to do it myself.
